My father told me him and his father would take the trolley car from Jersey City to Secaucus in the 1930’s to pick huckleberries In the woods, which he didn’t much enjoy as they had to avoid the many snakes creeping around there.

The electric bus with a gas engine could 'go anywhere', but it was called an "ALL SERVICE VEHICLE". The old trolleys were cut in half because they were too big to move over highways to the scrap yards.

It was possible and it was done that one could take a trolley at lower Broadway, NYC, and by changing trolleys, step-off in Boston, Mass. Incidentally, I have the memory of taking the final trolley to Hackensack, NJ.

Very early on, Public Service committed to all bus operation, and did not participate in the development of the the PCC streetcar. The PCC's for the Newark City Subway were purchased second hand from Minneapolis.

Someone told me Uber wasn't allowed downtown. I guess that's to protect the cab companies.

Why would they want to prevent re-use of the cars? Maybe some system, somewhere could have used them, rebuilt or otherwise.

It's a very good question. I guess they did not want someone to purchase all the old cars and start their own line. I personally believe that, there is still use for trolleys today especially at the city level.

I am with you. In fact not long ago I was talking to a city councilman about the idea of finding some old trolley cars and have them bus tourists over to historic Jim Thorpe to alleviate parking and traffic conditions. It would probably be about a 15 minute ride. The best part? there is a local train yard not in use just sitting there.

This is the north Jersey I loved= remembering 1950s. Our older generations left us a heritage. I still miss bamberger even after 60 years.

The transit operation of Public Service electric utility was a a car & oil industry operation. While the all service concept has a valid use (electric operation in dense city streets and scattered route in suburbs, in Newark just a step to all bus and then reduced service.
