  • Hopefully you guys enjoy this reaction! As I mentioned in the video, I do have a lot of other reactions to post (aside from Grace), and plus I do work and have a life outside this channel. To the majority of Grace fans, thank you so much for your love, patience and support. It's really unfortunate that a minority had to spoil it.
Aside from this negativity, it really is a pleasure to react to Grace. I want this channel to be something positive, rather than the opposite. Hopefully you will all continue to support me with this, and please refrain from leaving negative comments below.

Ughh don't listen to those trolls! You do whatever makes you happy and just ignore them. I'm an enormous Grace Vanderwaal fan but I would never deliberately attack or threaten to unsubscribe from a reactor for not giving a certain amount of attention toward an artist. That's ridiculous.

Actually Grace said she was bullied a lot at Suffern Elementary and even wrote two very good songs about it--Clay and Gossip Girl. They're worth having a listen to. Well, all of her songs are; she's an amazing songwriter.

Fortunately, and as far as we can all tell from Grace herself, the biggest struggle Grace has had in life is everyone telling her to do this, or do that and she will be more successful. I personally believe that is what 'Darkness Keeps Chasing Me' is all about.
Grace being true to herself is what won her the voters during America's Got Talent, gave us a fantastic EP and now her incredible first album 'Just the Beginning', and gives us the great songs she writes that can be related to by young and old alike.
Struggling with her own identity gave us 'I Don't Know My Name', the love of her sister gave us 'Beautiful Thing', the struggles of a friend gave us 'Moonlight', the struggles of her brother gave us 'A Better Life', being betrayed by a supposed friend gave us 'Gossip Girl', a phone conversation with her producers and management team gave us 'Talk Good', and some bullying in school gave us 'Clay '.
She says a lot of her writing comes from movies and books where she tries to put herself in a character's shoes and go with it. She is a song writing prodigy.

If one finds living in a family unit that is American upper middle class a incubator for mental health issues, then perhaps she does, but I've personally yet to see any aspect of her family (and their interaction) that would lead one to believe she's anything but loved and supported by all her family.
What I do believe is that she can capture those times when things in her life (like being bullied at school) did not go the way anyone would like, and put that emotion into a song. Also, her latest offerings are collaborations with industry professionals so there is that to consider. I read yesterday where she is being cast in a Disney movie to be released next year. She's also gotten modeling instruction & jobs.
To be honest, the most enduring aspect of her appearance on AGT was she was just a pre-teen normal kid who had a natural talent to write & perform her own songs. Funny that in one of her early interviews for AGT she said she started writing cause she was bored. She acts like her age and none of it feels forced or faked and I've never seen anything that would lead me to believe she is unhappy. (Disclaimer: What was in the past is no guarantee of what is in the future).

She has an older brother that has had some serious problems in the past, but is doing much better now. The song "Better Life" was written for him. I think he is working with her crew on the tour now. Also she had a close friend that had emotional problems which is the basis for the songs "Moonlight" and "Darkness keeps chasing me". She wrote "Beautiful Thing" for her sister. That song is used in the Windex commercial "The Story of Lucy". It's here on UA-cam. Tissues are required to watch, FYI. (My Favorite)

That is there to say that hasn't been said before she is a talent of iconic proportions a vessel of emotional transference and story telling that is delivered directly into your soul. Like Van gogh or Mozart her impact will be truly realized further down the road and will stand the test of time when others simply fade away. She unifies the human spirit regardless of background or culture, let along genre of music. She is a unifier of the human spirit and is absolutely paramount in this world of today. I believe like any thinking person Grace has her good days and her bad days. But what really drives her writing is empathy. She can read a book or watch a movie and feel what the characters are feeling and then write a song to express those feelings, and perform it in a believable way. As far as this song goes, yes, she incorporated an old standard into this original song, so it is kind of half original and half cover.

I wonder if her great performance here helped get her the Stargirl role? By the way, it's a great book and though it was written before Grace was born it seems to be inspired by Grace. A ukulele playing outsider who dresses and acts unconventionally, helping strangers and not being like anyone else. Could easily make her a movie star.

A very nice reaction, natural, thoughtful and well said. I love that you really listened and watched rather than thinking about what you were going to say or being clever. Happy, positive, love, support. We can always use more of each. In one interview Grace said that she would like her music to help people feel less alone. I for one, know that she has achieved that goal with me. One of the unique and extraordinary things about Grace is she is willing to open her heart to the world. And thank goodness for that. We are blessed. As many above have said, "don't listen to the trolls. the only way we can save our world is with love. If we give in to hate, we will loose. It was nice to see you smile when you were talking about Grace. Use that smile to light up yourself and other in your life. We can never have too many smiles.

Great reaction/review. I like the fact that you watch the video with total concentration Some reactors don't and they miss things that they should see.. She took Johnny Nash's 1970s hit "I Can See Clearly Now" and reinvented it and made it her own. SO it is a cover......but it isn't.

Maybe the term 'hybrid' could be used? Just a couple of lines and some of the tune were used and there were several writers involved. Either way, it's an AWESOME song, every bit as great as the original! :)

You are correct! Grace would not approve of such behavior. In fact she has scolded her fans on more than one occasion for being rude. In the beginning Grace had the greatest fans. But as with any other up and coming artist, the riff raff starts jumping onboard.

This is a rewrtie of the old song I can see clearly now. She got permission from the original writer and the song only uses a couple of lines from the original.
She has not said anything about dealing with mental health issues of her own but has a friend that does. She did say she can cry on demand by keeping her eyes from blinking. I'm a big fan of Grace and enjoyed your reaction to this song. You should check out her song, Darkness Keeps Chasing Me. I watch a lot of your reactions and look forward to the next one.
I really liked your reaction to Jackie Evancho, she is an amazing talent.

Yes, this was originally recorded by Johnny Nash in 1972. Grace liked the title and literally rewrote to whole song, to great critical acclaim. Shear genius if you asked me, and I love the original as is.

QueenoftheNorth: I have to say I really felt for you that some people were being rude to you because they don't see beyond their own wants. I totally agree with everything you said, and I applaud you for your honesty in how you feel on this. Of course you have a life outside the internet, and of course there are always the few who fail to understand that. Like many, I love Grace's music also, but I also love much other music, and particularly many of the young singers around these days; Angelina Jordan, Amira, Jackie Evancho, to name but a few. Having said that, I love watching your reactions to almost anything, as I love your genuine and honest reactions, and your positive personality, which is a breath of fresh air on the internet today. Try not to worry about those who issue "unsubscribing" type ultimatums, there are plenty of other people who will love whatever or whoever you react to, and will respect that you have your life outside the internet too. ... On this particular song, Grace has indeed taken a song from the past, and worked her own magic on it to make it great and relevant for both herself and for today. The original "I can see clearly now," was from an album of the same title by Johnny Nash back in 1972. Thanks for a great reaction. Take good care of yourself. :)

Grace herself has not lived such a bad life but she has this AMAZING ability to hear a story from a friend or family member and portray that emotion as if it was her own. She sometimes gets that from a movie or other music video and it all helps her in her frame of mind when she brings that mindset to life. If you've seen any of her interviews, she says how she herself has lived a fairly happy-go-lucky life but often borrows the experiences and emotions of what she sees and gives it a beautiful raspy singing voice.
This video really rings loud and 'Clearly' with me because for over a decade and a half I have suffered from a dark depression that keeps me from leaving the house (except to work) or socializing with my friends and it almost gives me that strength (not quite but almost) but my imaginary prison bars are still winning so far. :-(

I'm so sorry that you had to deal with some rude comments. Grace surely wouldn't support any mean actions towards others. She was bullied at the school herself so she would never allow that. And in Grace's fan club group we do not tolerate that either.
Actually you don't have to offer excuses or explain you actions on your channel, just delete inappropriate comments and block authors, or whatever - it's your place, do what you feel right.

I was able to see your mind working while you were watching the video. It is a rewrite of Jonny Nash's song "I Can See Clearly Now" and there's a good story that goes with that. Short version; She helped some producers change the lyrics to put a little darker spin on it and gradually bring the light forward. I think it made the song better! She is an actress with an uncanny way of projecting her feelings in a song that makes you believe everything she is saying. On a side note, Grace would say " You Be You" . Thanks for the reaction ❤️

It's disconcerting that many of Grace's fans are so quick to take umbrage over the slightest perceived disrespect to their idol. It seems that she inspires such great love and admiration that many of them lose perspective. I think Carlyle might have found her to be an interesting case in "Heroes and Hero-Worship." Anyway, this was a very interesting reaction video. (BTW, her best performance of the song, IMO, was on the Tonight Show with Stephen Colbert. World class.) The song is a hybrid. While Nash's soaring chorus is retained, the verses were added, according to Grace, to bring a dark mood as contrast to the uplifting choruses. And, yes, you're right, Grace has had some hard times psychologically. Her conflicts are plainly discernible in her dramatic song, "Darkness Keeps Chasing Me," performed with an emotional intensity that could only come from first-hand experience. Here's a "music video" of the song, created by Petra Viklund. ua-cam.com/video/rntXMc4Ny9M/v-deo.html

Grace is not suffering from mental issues... she is not only a special singer that will sell millions of albums, but she is also quite an actress. Maybe we'll see some films ala the Elvis route. She certainly seems capable. Grace is very talented and shows great projection in her songs. And she knows how to command the Stage. That much is evident in her Magic Dragons Openers. Soon, it will be someone opening for her, instead. :)

Grace is clearly very empathic and for this reason I think she experiences emotions of others powerfully. I don't know if she suffers from depression per se, but she has experienced her brother having drug problems and having to go into re-hab. This clearly impacted her in a powerful way. (She completely left her brother out when she talked about her family on AGT.) Grace's family is filled with art and esthetics (her mom is a designer of sorts) and artists, musicians, etc. in general spend more time in their head and are driven by emotions more than the average person. This is quite obvious with Grace.

James Curfman Grace’s dad, Dave, is a great guy. I had a chance to talk with him for about 5 minutes and he is definitely Grace’s biggest fan. He seriously believes she with have an impact in this world. Grace’s brother is Jakob. He is currently working on Grace’s tour and can be seen in videos skateboarding with her in the tour bus garages at the stadiums. With his permission Grace talked about his addiction problems and said after rehab he was once again “the old Jake back.” The song Burned is inspired by his battle with drug addiction. I also got to chat briefly with Grace’s mom, Tina, while waiting line at the Troubadour in LA. She is so warm and friendly. They are all so warm and down-to-earth one can only hope the music industry doesn’t chew them up and spit them out. That said, Dave is a businessman and fairly high up in LG’s corporate ranks so not likely to be a total newb-though the music industry is certainly a world unto itself.

I've never known a more profound empath - and at 12 and 13 years old. She says she also writes just from seeing a TV show or movie and imagining how the characters feel. And I totally believe she didn't mention her brother during AGT due to a family decision to keep him out of the spotlight during a crucial time in his recovery. God forbid the media sharks got hold of that.

Queen, I have watched a lot of stuff about Grace and by Grace. She doesn't dwell on the negative parts of her life but she has said some things that indicate that she has struggled with some stuff in her life and is still struggling and also that she is hyper-aware of the struggles of those around her. Her music tells more about her depths than she tells in interviews.

May I first deal with your first part of this video. Anyone who unscribed because you hadn't spent half your life reacting to Grace is a subscriber you need like you need a bad cold. Ignore them they are stupid. I am on the admin team for Graces fan club but I also am a fan of dozens of other performers. To worship one star at the expense of all others is not only unhealthy but also crazy as it is ignoring other wonderful talent. It's your channel and if they don't like it they know what to do, you just carry on as you are, I think you are great as you are always so considered with your reactions, and I like the variety. As for this Clearly Video, two things, as someone says in the comments as far as we know she has not had a mental health problem apart from some unpleasant bullying at her junior school. She has though had a friend who suffered from some form of depression, and it inspired her Moonlight song and later her Darkness song. The other point about this video is it was filmed at a house near to her own home and rather than try to get the choir to sing the entire choir was constructed from recording of her own voice and a male team member played around with technically. Grace says they had super fun doing it.

Grace doesn’t have any problems except for being a little tired. She was acting up set , just to add emotion to her song. She writes her own music and the words for her songs. Later this year she is going to make a movie with Disney. She will be staring in the movie. Because as she shows every one in the video we just watched, she can also act. Please don’t think that l am being ugly. I feel that you were only reacting to her feelings that she was trying to put across to everyone.

Grace appears to be taking on a role of informing her listeners of the problems of teen depression, I felt her message in Moonlight was "don't idly sit by while your friend is suffering, get involved, support and help them." I think this video and City Song video is Grace trying to show Hollywood she can act too. I believe she wants to be an actress more than a singer and that may happen in the future. We may only see her on the big screen some day and the songs could come few and far between. Her career seems to be the opposite of Hailee Steinfeld. It's a shame that so many people didn't understand what Simon meant when he said "I think your the next Taylor Swift" it's the misinformed opinions that seems to go the farthest, where even you heard that interpretation of it. As usual your reaction never cease to intrigue me

I actually do like that you are quiet through whatever video you are reacting to, and then talk about what you saw and heard after it's over. That way, you do see and hear everything in the video that you are reacting to. That's an AWESOME way to handle things, and IF I ever do decide to start making content myself, that is exactly how I would handle reaction videos. As to what you said at the very beginning of the video here, I am so sorry that people put you through that, because that is completely un-called-for (obviously)! I don't think she has mental health issues herself. (Not anymore, anyway. She has been bullied at school; a thing that can do a number on anybody). But she certainly has experienced it in her surroundings (has talked about it various times). And, as you will discover while discovering Grace: A thing that is even more her strength than her goosebump-inducing voice and songwriting genius is her empathy. She can FEEL her fellow humans. And she's really good at putting these feelings into words and music. Making mental health issues a talking point is something she feels very strongly about; it's also what has landed her her gig with Imagine Dragons this summer, I think.

I know of nothing in regard to Grace and some sort of depression. I doubt there's an issue. What's obvious is her extraordinary social awareness for someone of her age. Her lyrics spill that. Listen to her song 12 stars written after seeing a movie.. written when she was 11 or 12. IMO she's the greatest raw musical talent discovered in all tv talent shows combined. In regard to Simon saying she's the next Taylor Swift, Howie Mandel later corrected him by saying she's more like the next Bob Dylan. Of course she's really all her own.

Unfortunately if you put yourself out into the public as you do (And I am grateful that you do because you are a pleasure to watch.) you will attract a few of the "wrong" sort. It comes with the territory. The more popular you are the better the odds that someone will "hate" on you. That is the world we live in. Here is a live stream interview of Grace talking about the concept of Clearly. This kid is wise beyond her years.
    ua-cam.com/video/bM_nqXKmHzw/v-deo.html
I have seen Grace talk about it as a re-work, a re-imagination of the original Johnny Nash song "I can see clearly now". Not really a cover as there are only 3 lines of the original chorus used. She was invited by one of the producers of her album Ido Zmishlany to join in on the rewriting of the song. It was originally supposed to be on her album, "Just the Begining" but it took it longer than expected to get permission to use it from Johnny Nash. So after they received permission it was released as a single.
As for her inspiration, Grace has mentioned almost from the beginning that she has experienced bullying in school, which we all know can leave lasting effects on a person for years to come. An early song that she performed in the finals of AGT was "Clay" where she talks about people wanting to mold you like they want you but she tells them, I'm Not Clay. "Moonlight" was inspired by a close friend that she could tell was struggling with depression, "A Better Life" was written for her older brother who she eventually revealed was recovering from substance addiction.
    Clay - ua-cam.com/video/3F5D6vIG7ng/v-deo.html AGT Finals
Moonlight - ua-cam.com/video/ib7coZA-okI/v-deo.html This was at VidCon and was the world premier for the single. This was probably the largest audience she had preformed for at that time.

I have spent many years working with and for young people and they feel exactly the same emotions as so called adults, what makes someone like Grace unusual and even unique, is she has the intelligence and artistic skill to put hose emotions on paper and in song. She only writes about what she understands and has either experienced or has someone close who has, so we get from deep emotional songs like Moonlight and Darkness to songs that say what teens really experience such as Just a Crush or Sick of Being Told. (what teenager has never said that. She shows a wisdom that adults all too often ignore. When she was asked about "Boyfriends" she indignantly retorted "stop trying to take my childhood away". A pure and brilliant answer.

Ms. Queen, Before I watched your reaction to Grace's "CLEARLY", I was hoping it was going to be her video, and you did, thank you for this. I think this is the best video Grace has done to date. She is really UBER-TALENTED. Grace is fortunate to find her nitch in life only not quite 4 yrs. ago. I noticed you have already reacted to other Grace songs. You are smitten with her along with many others. My all-time-fave of hers is GOSSIP GIRL from her PERFECTLY IMPERFECT (1st) CD... S6PHxdIOfYY (YT link). You should listen to Grace's 1st (full length) CD "JUST THE BEGINNING"; I personally think this CD is nothing short of a TAPESTRY MASTERPIECE! (and consider that she is 12 yrs. old) My 2 faves from this are: ESCAPE MY MIND and SICK OF BEING TOLD, and there are other songs that are very close, but you would have to listen to the CD for yourself...... CKnMAFeFrzo (YT link)
I would suggest you lie down and listen to it on a good stereo. Grace's energy is INFECTIOUS! Let me fill you in some facts I've run across about the making of this video. Johnny Nash (the 70's author/singer of this song) personally gave Grace permission to do what she wanted with his song. The house she used to film this in she says is about 5 minutes from her house; it's NOT a set. Grace at least more than tripled the number of song verses compared to Nash to make this song. I did a side-by-side comparison of this. Yes, Grace has personally said that she is interested in the subject of mental illness. I'm to understand that in considering all the decisions (audio & video) to make this video, around 80% of these decisions are hers. Also, I've been following Jackie Evancho since her beginning.

I just want to add a little to what Les said. Grace gets inspiration from many sources not just her own experiences. Clearly actually came to her almost complete and she was asked to add to it. Grace is a very good actor and it shows in her videos. She gives a very good performance in this video. Disney Pictures thinks enough of her acting skills to star her in a film this fall called "Stargirl". It is based on a book by the same name. Her fans swear she is Stargirl, but it was written before she was born. Enjoy your videos and pleaser forgive her very passionate fans.

Grace has a brother who has had challenges,,,,but is doing well now.....She has a lot of empathy for others, but really , most of it comes from reading, watching movies and a talent for imagining herself as people in stories.....a sort of Audrey Hepburn type ....She is 14 and very family oriented...and my guess is she would love you.

Hi, Q! Lovely as usual, on many levels. As you have sensed, Grace repeatedly sings and speaks about being kind to each other, and being open to where others may be coming from (that we often know nothing about). As to her sources, we should honor her privacy but I don't mind people repeating what she has said publicly. For instance, she once said, "For some reason I find it harder to write songs about pleasant and happy things, which is really strange." (5:44 in ua-cam.com/video/-_i54J8Se-A/v-deo.html ) She was attracted to the possibility of adding a darker backstory leading into Johnny Nash's uplifting chorus. I love the fun she and Ido Zmishlany had creating the "choir" by just the two of them singing many voices, even: "There's always that one kinda bad person in the choir...you've gotta mix that in!" (1:05 in ua-cam.com/video/hGvl-hih36g/v-deo.html ) Notice that Grace not only writes music and lyrics, but she designs videos: the description for this one states, "Based on an original concept by Grace VanderWaal." When you do "Darkness Keeps Chasing Me" (which she rarely sings in public), please use her MTV rooftop version, not anyone else's video (ua-cam.com/video/LjyquiQWF2M/v-deo.html ).

I can assure you that Grace has no mental problems at all. She is simply the greatest actress in the world at this time. Why do you think Disney chose her as THE STAR of their movie that is so appropriately titled Star Girl ? It is because she is Star Girl. Perfect casting I would say.

Grace has taken Johnny Nash's upbeat positive lyrics from "I Can See Clearly" and added them onto her original dark concept to bring the song out of the dark into the light.

Wow! I didn't realize how annoyingly single minded some of Grace VanderWaal's fans can be. I am a big fan of Grace's but I'm also a big fan of other artists and recognize that I can get my Grace fix at any number of channels, so why be nasty towards someone just because they are less fanatical. For now I am following current AGT contestant Courtney Hadwin who I like almost as much as Grace. If you haven't yet seen her, you might enjoy seeing another unique talent. But Grace is my favorite blossoming young star. I am grateful that I live in an era when you can O.D. on whatever performer you fancy at the moment.

Grace may be sad she isn't as close to her brother as she is to her sister. I hope she is not having any more serious problems like the four oldest girls of the Willis clan who were being raped by their father who received over a hundred million dollars in a legal settlement that resulted in the death of a half dozen of his siblings. One of their biggest hit original songs entitled "What can I say' turned out to be a clever cry for help their father never figured out. Look at their youtube video entitled The Willis Clan-"What Can I Say" [HQ]. The tragic story of the Willis clan and their comeback symbolized by their new original song Speak My Mind can be seen on a UA-cam video entitled The Willis Clan Interview Daily mail TV 2018.

On the question of emotions in her singing of this song, she has a brother in, or was in rehab. On the next Taylor Swift. Who needs another, she's great but go back and watch her teen concerts and compare depth of lyrics and delivery, Grace is 2 years younger. I just hope Disney doesn't end up monopolizing her. The art will suffer.

I don't know Grace personally but it is obviously owns social media. And like you I don't think she would approve of rude behavior. I know all entertainers have fans and I respect the other entertainers and their fans. I don't,however, have any respect for haters. Haters are all losers. I think they show their hatred simply because they hate their own lives and feel the need to spread hate because they are attempting to get attention. All they gain from their hate is nothing at all.

Totally get your opinion of some Grace VanderWaal fanatics. Strange, weird, odd, unpleasant that they spend 24/7 online monitoring young Grace. Some even hide behind a fake presence... Sad. Anyway, you be you!

    • @skepto-o-punk8286
      @skepto-o-punk8286 6 років тому +2

This is a bit odd comment. Many people -- such as I -- prefer to not mix a private lives with what happens online. It is simply a privacy issue. Of course there are also disgusting trolls that hide behind the anonymity of "a fake presence." Any group of fans -- not just Grace's -- will react strongly against trolls or others who express negative opinions against the artists they love. The whole "24/7 monitoring" point you add is silly. Grace has fans worldwide so any time of day you would likely encounter someone awake and ready to defend her.
Some people seem to misunderstand the whole concept of the comment section. You have every right to express your opinion -- even a negative one. You DON'T, however, have the right to prevent people from reacting to it and expressing their disagreement. When I see someone express a moronic, ill-informed opinion, I'll have plenty to say about it. If your skin is so thin that your feelings are hurt by that ... well ... perhaps the Internet just isn't the place for you.
