How to Close a Frozen Game when Alt-f4 and the Task Manager don't work

- For whatever reason, a lot of frozen games don't honor alt-f4, and they aggressively retake control of your screen when you try to switch to other programs or close it via pressing the Windows (⊞) key. In the past, you'd have to restart your computer to escape, but I've found that every frozen game can be bypassed with this trick. Hope it helps!

Yeah, I've never heard of anyone mention this method of escaping a frozen game. Was why I thought to make a quick video when Fortnite helpfully provided the opportunity :D

Small tip as well: You can change the option on your task manager to appear over everything else. That way you can safely use it using ctrl + alt + delete as well. Personally feel this should be a feature enabled by default otherwise it defeats the purpose of using task manager to stop unresponsive programs and audit a system.

Just hit windows-tab. It's the same process but it saves a lotta steps. Sometimes you can't even get the windows menu open but windows+tab works.
Or if you already have an extra workspace, press (I think it's) Ctrl + Super + left/right.
Not able to test it right now, 'cause I'm not on Windows, but I thought it was that.
Also enabling "always on top" in the task manager (pop up task manager with Supr + (shift?) + Esc. It's faster than ctrl+alt+del) will put it on top of the game.

you’re a genius! on windows 11 i hit ‘start tab’ and was able to get my mouse to function, then moved the frozen game to a new desktop, from the first desktop now the mouse works and i’m able to force quit the game in task manager! thank you, thank you kind sir!

had same problem and a while ago i restarted my computer and my hardisk went and i had to reinstall 650gb's of games back still havent bothered to download them all

Thank you! You have no idea how many times I've had games freeze/crash on me and prevented me from closing them through task manager or desktop because the screen would cover both up. It's annoying as hell and thankfully this method gets around that.

Doesn't work for me when I open task manager on the second desktop it just takes me back to the game and then task manager isn't there
Drag the task manager to the second desktop.
@@MrCrazywrench doesnt work it just transfers the frozen screen to the new desktop
Best thing I found when this method doesnt work is logging out. It closes everything but doesnt any where near as long as a hard restart
You have to open task manager on the first desktop

You need to use WindowsKey+Tab and then drag Task Manager onto Desktop 2 on the top bar.
Then you can use TM from Desktop 2 to shut down your problem game.

Holy shit THANK you, it’s always these smaller videos that have the REAL solution.
This made it even worse, The game disappeared and the freeze screen is still displayed, the guide was really helpful but it made things worse for me.

Wicked man!! This helped a bunch especially like playing older games from GOG that sometimes hitch up and don’t run the best… I’d just have to log out completely most times and re log back in… pain in the ass to do, but this worked wonders 🍻
