    You were given a lemon and made sweet lemonade. Great job. Thanks for sharing your skill and talent.

    That sealer inside really didn't help matters! I suggest if you ever do anything similar make cover plates from similar gauge matl. To the tank, rivet in place with blind copper or steel pop rivets then solder up and solder over the rivet heads. You can get solder paste to wipe the mating surfaces with so they self tin when heated. I like to scour the junk shops for big lumping solid copper soldering irons, the old type you heat with a separate gas flame. Great for tin smithing. Enjoying your channel, thanks for inviting us into your shop. Cheers.

    The joy of thin metal and welding it as the holes want to run from you.
    People use JB weld on tanks I heard.
    I feel for you and this challenge you attempted and successfully did a great job and enjoyed watching.

    That was fun… to watch! Not an easy job, was it? But a good job, I’m sure. And learning for me. Thanks. Les

    Well done you could have made one large patch for filler neck and hole. I must say I soldier the few tanks I have done but also put the petrol seal stuff in also which works fine most of the time.

      I definitely need more soldering practice... but not any time soon 😁

    I feel your pain.. haha.. I’ve never had much luck with lap welding sheet metal. Usually always do my stuff as a tight butt weld, little to no filler with my aviation torch.. but that’s what has worked for me in the past. I hope the additives in your fuel don’t screw with your epoxy.. the stuff we have here in California destroyed the JB Weld that was supposed to be good for fuel on a couple of carburetor floats I used it on.. turn the epoxy to kind of chalk.. i’m enjoying your channel and really dig your ‘lil Special…

    • @thebracketfactory
      @thebracketfactory  4 місяці тому

      Thanks Dave - time will tell with that epoxy repair - fortunately the repairs are on the top side so any leaks should become evident before it dumps all the fuel!

    I had to make a tank from scratch for my Riley. Bit easier when you start from clean steel but they are still fiddly. I had to weld mine as the rules here say you can't have a soldered seams for the main tank body even though that's period correct. I had to TIG it all. You CAN solder in the filler and pickups though. The two part epoxy I have always wanted to try is called Belzona. If the price is anything to go by the stuff must be good but it's far too expensive for me to try!

    • @thebracketfactory
      @thebracketfactory  3 місяці тому

      blimey, you have rules for tank construction?! When it comes to old cars, we are pretty 'rule free' over here.. (thankfully!)

    So in my world, .030 thick is like 22 gauge and that’s insanely hard to weld. I don’t care what the weld looks like you did a good job!

    I’ve used glue on my petrol tank and no problems yet.Also on an awkward overflow pipe on my radiator,so far so good.Is this a bodge I don’t know,but it seems to work.

    I would have made both panels first that way you can use the other holes to help you hold things while you’re making the panels, just sayin?!?

    • @thebracketfactory
      @thebracketfactory  3 місяці тому

      yes, I think gif I did it all again (though I hope I don't!)... I would do it differently - perhaps riveting the panels on and *then* soldering them.

    Couldn't you have silver soldered all the repairs?

    • @thebracketfactory
      @thebracketfactory  4 місяці тому

      maybe - one thing is for sure is that I need more practice! The problem with silver solder is that it needs a pretty high temp and that metal moves all over the place! If I did all over again I would have spent a lot more time cleaning it first..
