    Love the Lola! I built a 550 Porshe replica (Martin Walker from Thruxton) in the 90s (whilst moving house and having a new baby!). Nothing as complex as the Lola, but it was a beautiful thing. A similar gear linkage required! I turned the pinion around in the VW gearbox rather tha inverting it. I did about 15k miles in her including runs to Cornwall and commuting...through the winter! Alas I got tempted and sold her to fund buying a 55 Mercury a few years later. You can't keep em all 😢 Loving your videos (I found you via Bryan's vids)

    Agree with a commenter below. Those old copper head gaskets can be reused if you anneal them. With respect to the cyl surface rust. You may want to remove head and hone. Depends on what your trying to get as a finished product. Maybe re ring it also if the bores are not too oval. thanks for great video

    Some of the YZR's I have seen look like they use the SZR660 swing arm because it has the notch for the lower expansion pipes and "scaffolds" on the left, like the 0WC1, and the SZR is the same Delta Box frame as the 3MA.

    • @thebracketfactory
      @thebracketfactory 8 днів тому

      @@RachaelSA I thought the SZR frame was slightly bigger than the 3MA… but I’ve never had them side by side. Regarding the swing arm, i think I prefer the 3XV as it looks a bit mote YZR, and the scaffold can easily added in.

    • @RachaelSA
      @RachaelSA 8 днів тому

      @@thebracketfactory I have also never seen them side by side, I have never seen an SZR in person. In the 90s/2000s there was a Japanese racing bike shop I used to take my 3MA's to for tires and the one mechanic mentioned the SZR has the exact same frame, because I was asking if they could get me some 3MA engines as I have an 89 and 90 SP, and a garage full of frames/rolling chassis/project bikes and he said stick an XR/XT/XL 500 in one, and I asked if the frame was strong enough and he said the SZR is the exact same frame and its a 660cc, but now I'm not actually sure, I just believed that for 20 years?

    Given it came off an old fire engine I can't imagine they'd have be too worried about a few water drips from the engine back in the day! The water pump on my Brooklands come with a graphite disc under the impellor for sealing. That broke so I replaced with with a Teflon one. No idea at all if that is going to work or not. I've not tried it with coolant yet!

    • @thebracketfactory
      @thebracketfactory 10 днів тому

      I think you are right Simon.... the original radiator is absolutely enormous and the engine was also fitted with a means of topping up the system when running (using the 'firefighting' water) in the event of any serious water loss. I've now got some 'modern' square section graphite impregnated packing so if it leaks (too much) I'll stick that in ... should come apart quite easily now!

  • @ronniedale6040
    @ronniedale6040 10 днів тому

    With rope pump packing the grease is necessary to lube the packing otherwise itll burn and wear the shaft.

    • @thebracketfactory
      @thebracketfactory 10 днів тому

      Thanks Ronnie, but that grease nipple feeds the bearings, not the rope packing. There is no way to grease the rope other than removing ad re-packing. That said I now have some 'modern' graphite based seal and I don't think that needs grease at all....!

    OK, been following a bit. Good project, but ... 2 things come to mind. 1.) the distributors were made for "work" engines that pump all day at relatively steady RPM and load. So no vacuum advance. Many fire trucks are configured this way. But it won't work well on road trips with light throttle and high vacuum in your proposed car. Not enough advance. 2.) the starter sounds "draggy" or lazy. I very much suspect that, like many truck from the 40's~mid 60's, the fire truck was fitted with two 2 battery banks and a series/parallel switch for the starter. That would give you redundant circuits for the ignition when running (pumping) and double the voltage to the starter when cranking. Having driven many trucks from this general time period, seems that was the norm 😊

    • @thebracketfactory
      @thebracketfactory 10 днів тому

      Hi, thanks for the comments - yes you are correct - no vacuum advance (though it does have centrifugal advance). And yes I agree about the starter... I might whip that off anyway and have a quick look - but my batteries are not that big either so that won't help.. Amazed it started actually!

    • @thebracketfactory
      @thebracketfactory 10 днів тому

      @@matthewridgeway9250 well at the moment there is only one distributor fitted, but there are two ignition circuits in there, with 2 sets of points.. when I fit the 2nd distributor I’ll be able to knock out one ignition system at a time and ‘compare and contrast’!!

    Its usually easier if the gland packing is put into the housing with the ends cut at 45 degrees rather than on the shaft.

    • @thebracketfactory
      @thebracketfactory 11 днів тому

      I may do that next time... but the shaft has a shoulder for the impeller which would snag on the gland rings - but I could make a taper which I could screw on the end of the shaft which would allow the shaft to slide through... (if there is a next time... it's 50:50 at the moment!)

    Nice work Chris! What's your target radiator wise? Must have been a generous one originally as presumably designed to be effective with no ram effect when pumping? Are you going to lash something up to allow for tuning or plan ahead for the special? Is there going to be a big chassis reveal? I get little enjoyment after the first fire up seeing with the multitude of men of a certain age on YT who have a large motor on a frame that is never going to do anything other than have a perfunctory rev up once in a blue moon over too many Budweisers.

    • @thebracketfactory

Now whilst I am partial to the odd massive engine running on a stand for no reason, please rest assured that this one is destined for a car... Will there be a big chassis reveal? Well I do plan to reveal a big chassis, if that's what you mean?! (but only when I've found it..) Good news is that I have a 'hot lead' so I may have news soon. Rad wise I will use one of the two I have to get her up and running, but my gut feel (and mind's eye) don't think either will be suitable for the car... but time will tell...

    Nice project. Good episode. Suggestion: when you put the water pump back together, use some fine emory cloth tape to polish the packing surface. And the use some "Vasoline" in the surfaces and into the rope so it'll be lubed while it's running w minimum water flow (drip). Also suggest you use some RTV on the threads of the impeller. I'd use some "Never Seize" on the threads, then wiped off and RTV will seal the threads and act as poor mans thread locker. And allow it all to unscrew pretty easily 😊

    That pump is a great piece of engineering in fact greatly over engineered like the rest of the engine, I wasn't really surprised to see metric bearings used as in my experiences mostly with 50s Nash's the Americans surprisingly quite often used metric dimensioned components. One point I would make is the use of copper grease inside of the pump, most metals are sacrificial to copper especially in the presence of water, copper anti seize compounds use a low melting point grease as their base which is not waterproof and is designed to dry out when hot and its original intended use was for things like exhaust manifold nuts and studs. Over the course of my 50+ years of engine and machine building Ive had and seen some terrible problems caused by its usually inappropriate use, much better would have been to use a waterproof grease such as CL or even the lanolin grease you were using. Looking forward to the next instalment.

    • @thebracketfactory
      @thebracketfactory 12 днів тому

      Cheers Grant! I actually uses graphite grease on that seal, (and a smear of copper on the thread) but I may well end up swapping that seal for another (new) one if it leaks too badly!

  • @racekar80
    @racekar80 12 днів тому

    Without exhaust gaskets your going to get massive leaks and will burn out your exhaust valves, this happens when air leaks back into the manifold and hits the hot exhaust valve.

    • @thebracketfactory
      @thebracketfactory 12 днів тому

      I'd not considered that, cheers, but I do intend to get rid of those manifolds soon and make some new ones... with gaskets!
