WOW😮
Whenever I need inspiration I go to our local car museum. Only been to Brooklands once, it's a bit far for me to get to, but my one trip was amazing. I did walk up the banking. It's WAY steeper than it appears on film. I also really enjoyed sitting in the Harrier so I am glad to see they still do that! A very atmospheric place if you have any interest in pre-war racing and know something of the history there. I enjoyed the bus museum there too!
It is an amazing place… I only skimmed the surface in the bus museum and there are also loads of bikes and more aircraft… including a Concorde! Let us know when you nip back and go again!!
Wow.
I can recommend a visit!
Thanks for the video mate enjoyed it and glad to see that you must be getting into the engine
In deeper and deeper…!
Those fellas that hammered round that track at massive speeds on leaf spring suspension and drum brakes and open cockpits had sphericals the size of footballs,su’s will work very well, manifolds will be interesting to build, maybe jag type with considerable mods,or save your self some pain and keep it original,I’m sure it’s got more than enough hp in a lightweight brooklands type racer, with any type of long term project keeping the inclination going is always hard in our grotty winters, keep the faith.👍
the manifolds would actually be pretty straightforward actually ... each bank has 3 inlet ports, each one siamesed to share to 2 cylinders each. so all I would need would be 6 big flanged elbows to mount 6 x HS4 carbs. But I think I am getting ahead if myself here!!
Not sure of the throat size of hs4 carbs, but I would think the smaller a series engine su carbs might be better,I’m guessing it’s a fairly low revving and low compression engine so big carbs might make it run like a bag of shite at low revs, bigger carbs could be jetted but a bit of a faff, time for a supercharger, lol
@ interesting fact of the day is that the 4 in HS4 is tells us that the diameter is 1 4/8ths (1.5”)… each 1.5” carb would supply to effectively a 1.4L, 2 cylinder engine. My Austin 7 has a HS2 (1 1/4”) single SU for a 4 cylinder 750 cc engine and is about right. So 6 x HS4 doesn’t feel like the correct order of magnitude for such a large engine… but still a lot more carb than the twin carbs it has now. All those in favour say ‘aye’ !!!!
Aye,lol.su carbs are good, only give the the fuel the engine it demands, think strombergs are of similar design
Hi Chris - Thanks for the tour of Brooklands - a true shrine to speed! You used to be able to go inside the Wellington but sadly no longer. I see you are stripping down the La France heads so presumably you are also going to clean up the bores before an attempt at start up? It would be a wise decision IMO. If the La France doesn't work out would you consider a Jaguar V12 (option 4 if you like) plenty big enough for a single seater I'd have thought.
Top marks for watching to the end John! Yes... Plan B has turned into Plan B 1/2 ... I've waded in even deeper now. I don't want to 1) spoil it of 2) tempt fate.... but I'm 'optimistic'! And i want to bolt 6 SUs to it!!
Nice to take a break and get re-inspired to continue down the rabbit hole. Can't wait to see the next steps!
and they are very big rabbits!!!
Must visit there, but as a few others noted - its a long way for me. You seem to get more than your fair share of Troll comments, don't know why, if they are so bored with what you post they can always go and watch "dull men in sheds" where there is nothing worthwhile going on. Please do not get distracted by a clapped out VW caddy like another youtuber who is sitting on a big V12!!!
Wow !!! What a place. Thanks for taking us along 👍
No Problem - I strongly recommend a visit if you are ever anywhere near (or even if you are miles away!)
It's a museum I've never visited, certainly cars there that may help you settle on a look for your car build. It must get a bit daunting fixing an engine that is old and huge. I doubt many others exist which makes it both more interesting and difficult. Are you planning to make it street legal? Thanks for the trip to Brooklands.
Cheers Colin - I might be grumbling about the old engine, but I'm loving it really... and yes, it will need to be street legal and a 2 seater ...
While I'm sure tuning 6 SU's would be challenging if anyone could it would be you...I like what I heard for inspiration so far.
I'm a sucker for punishment - making complicated linkages is my idea of fun!
What a pity the weather was not better for you .ill come back in a bit 1;36 ....The music is drowning out your words 🥲 i think your 7 is as good as most of these cars .Given the money those companies had and the facilities your up there mate you cant see this but others can and do ,you have so many projects on the go its hard to see the wood from the trees at times but you have the ability and the skill set that's what counts thanks for the video.
Thanks David. Sorry about the audio… was all a tad ‘slapdash’ as I was in a hurry to get back into the cold, damp and dark workshop 😂.
I thought that the car that you're doing up was the one in the thumbnail. A bit click-batey that picture
@@lynnmorton7544 apologies … hope you were not too disappointed.
If there was one thing I DIDN'T like about the Hawker Hurricane it was the exhausts. They're the wrong pattern, none of the H H's had them fitted from new. Those ones came along later (retrofitted)
oh, I didn't know that... Was it originally a single manifold?
@@thebracketfactory No, they were in pairs
As a big fan of structural engineering, I love the Wellington with its geodesic construction with excellent strength to weight ratio. I always thought a neat project for a big motor Pendine/Bonneville type speedster would be something like the Wellington or even the Hurricane tube-frame with an excellent aero shape and fabric covering.
hmm... now there's a thought!!
One of the best places to go for ideas. Have you got room for the La France project at home, or is it a time to find a workspace?
I do have a plan to 'make some space'.... just want to get the big old girl running first...!
@@thebracketfactoryI knew you would have a plan...
im really looking forward to this car you are going to build for this V-12 . looked like a nice musem . thanks
Cheers, thanks for watching.
Love a good museum and Brooklands is great though I haven't been there for 20 odd years since I was a student in Farnborough. Must go back soon though a bit of a trek from Bristol.
Make the trip... well worth it!
Thanks Chris, looks a wonderful place, full of history, dreams and interest. No bikes there? Certainly were some 2-wheeled beasts raced there prewar.
I have to apologise Leslie - yes there were some bikes there and I even got some great footage of an incredible 500cc 2-stroke Scott... but in my rush to do the video I forgot to include it! Next time.....
@ ooh! A Scott! Was it yowling? (Scott ‘in joke’). I’ll look forward to that. Les
Excellent Chris
Cheers Andrew.
Thank you nice video - visits to Brooklands best done solo. So much to see so much to read/learn - bliss.
Glad you enjoyed it!
What a great day out at Brooklands, I really should make the effort to go
You should - it's incredible..!
The Napier Railton was at Old Warden Race Day a few weeks ago along with other early aircraft engined cars.. What a sound!
It's an amazing thing!!
One of our favourite places to visit! Sadly it’s a 5 hr drive but we make the trip every year!
5 hours is a long way away! But there is so much to see...
Thanks again. Loved the front brakes on the Delage as well. SU's are the best looking carbs, very smooth and simple appearing.
I have a soft spot for SUs after fitting to the Austin... I need to start scouring ebay now!
AMAZING CONTENT AS ALWAYS👍💪if you can’t fix it,take it back to the OLD BLOKE YOU GOT IT FROM😱😂👍
I'll get that old girl going even if it's the last thing I do!
@ 😱🤪👍
Brooklands every time I am in the UK
good choice!!
Brooklands was on my door step in the Uk. Two of my brothers worked there on aircraft. A amazing place well worthwhile visit. That’s for sharing ps also a lot of bikes raced there.
Thanks Anthony.
Spitfire exhaust it wont be a healthy idea
yes, you are probably right!
Hermoso paseo gracias por compartir. Seran muchas ideas para un solo proyecto
My pleasure, thanks for watching.
Didn't realise the museum part was so extensive. Thanks for showing.
It's enormous... I just scratched the surface!
crap, boring
I understand that you don't like my videos - that's fair enough, each to their own. What I don't understand is why you keep watching them?
@thebracketfactory it's easy, doing the engine, getting it done, explaining how it's done, seeing it getting done, that's it. all the waffle and posturing I just put up with, but wandering around aimlessly at junk, just ain't my cup of tea. so get to work and get it done
What a spiteful little child.....😅
Heads off, rust will be like grinding paste in there
yes... I'm inclined to agree....
Can't you get rid that oil injectiction and run premix? 50/1 or40/1 ?
@@stewart8127 actually that’s what we ended up doing.. 👍
Castor Bean?
Well I have enjoyed your videos, they are entertaining and interesting. Your channel deserves more exposure. The only annoyance for me is your play list is in the wrong order but I can live with that...
Thanks Richard, I appreciate the feedback. And I'll see if I can sort out the playlist!
You've come this far - take the heads off and clean up the rust with a hone - don't have to take the pistons out. Take this opportunity to change the head gasket. Enjoyed the video.
Thanks Michael, it's very much looking that way now....
Being that you found a broken valve and there is some rust, to save the rings and give the old girl a good chance at starting, I would say take the heads off and hone the bores. You can check out the condition of the cylinders and clean the ports out of the soot.
If you use radiator coolant instead of water you will find any leaks way more easily. It is about 1 tenth as dense as water. You can buy filter mesh that allows petrol but not water to get through.
@@romandybala that’s a good shout, cheers 👍
Bores like that.. Fill the cylinders with a ATF and Acetone mix and let it sit for a bit. Vacuum out the mix, squirt some engine oil in them and turn it over.
Stay tuned for more adventures if 'Chris goes down a rabbit hole'...
That thermostat is a little brass work of art!
Awesome isn't it! Needs a little test vid...
Definitely at least a light hone on the bores.
Agree with plan b,been down that rabbit hole of buying numerous parts, oil the bores up ,soften any rust and scale, soften carbon around stuck rings, any pits in the bores will fill with any crud that gets scraped off as long as you get enough compression to get to fire,as a last resort 24v gets em really spinning over,I’d be inclined to make some sort of exhaust system otherwise if it has got various unpleasant noise’s your not going to hear em till maybe to late, loved the over engineered water pump, let it rip pal,a full rebuild will be serious money,12 cyls to rebore,12 oversize pistons n rings, possible crank regrind, new shells, etc,I can feel ya financial pain just writing this, lol,
Thanks for feedback Brett. Good point about the exhaust system 👍.
Great video, you intrigued me to get racing with a 7
They are fantastic fun - you don't need a massive engine! (but it's nice to have a choice...)
@@thebracketfactory Thanks for the comments, I have been racing MGB-GT's, MGA's and FF's ... Maybe time to something different... Just the fact that there is no harnas and roll hoop scares the hell out of me with open wheels.. Seen to many flips on the track...
@D3Sshooter yes.. that is a very good point.. the supercharged cars running on methanol will do well over 100 mph 😬
don't labour the point, could been 10 minutes vid, if nob for all the useless waffle
Thanks, all feedback gratefully received 👍.
Clever bloke … enjoy watching you go about solving problems. What’s the intentions for the motor ?
Cheers Darryn. Plan is to stick it in. 1930’s chassis and make a Brooklands type racer !
Well if it runs and you are going to strip will you rebore it! If so then fill bores with diesel and turn engine over for a few minutes which will release piston rings and ease bores. Plugs out of course! Then go through start up procedure to see if runs. I would fill with water as with a block that long there must be a chance of heat variation through the block and it will start soaking the spaces between the cylinders. If there is a bad crack some where it will probably self declare. Not overly scientific but you are passing over that format for basic pragmatic check and this saves you the cost of head gaskets and any other funnies that this design may have. As you said is it running or is it furniture!
Thanks for comments Glyn. Really want to avoid rebore and new pistons/rings. Don’t think they are even available! Still tip toeing through the minefield!!
@ As for parts be unconventional. You know that at need repair was going to have double six cylinder expense. You have flat head pistons so don’t forget to look at motor cycle market and industrial static engines. If you find something old a mm big you will have room to turn it down. People make piston rings from cast iron drain pipes machined down and even cast their own pistons. For what you may need to do and the performance you wish to extract you do not need F1 accuracy but that does not mean you can be slap dash.
I would expect those copper gaskets are meant to be reused. Back in the day you were probably expected to pull those covers and clean and inspect as part of the service schedule.
these ones have no choice... they are getting re-used whether they like it or not...
Thanks for the video. I'd just try to get it started at this point, maybe put some oil or secret sauce in the cylinders with the spark plugs out, let it sit, then carefully evacuate that material to clean up the cylinders a bit? I imagine the rabbit hole is a bit deep if you start getting carried away....
Ah the dreaded rabbit hole... I'm being sucked in!
get the bad head welded up and re- machine it bud , be like new and all comppresions will be similer 😁🤘🤘
Surely inserted valve seats could rectify that damaged valve seat.
Hi David, yes the could... but I'm not quite ready to 'invest' yet!
