Jeff Parry best of luck with it! And with your fry! 👍
@@Aquarimax It worked great, loads of infusoria and fry and guppies love it. Thanks so much.
@@Aquarimax I have had a brew made from a red pepper chugging away.....just added some pond water to it to dilute it.
It reeks something awful! Will be interested to see if the infusoria will like it!
Meanwhile I have just made a new batch from lettuce, peas and beans....
Ged Farnan There is a certain odor...but smelly bacteria will likely mean happy Infusoria 😊👍
@@Aquarimax Hey bro, can we do this with potatoes? I have got some Glo Danios.
I dont breed fish now. But I seen this video and who its by. And HAD to make a comment about this person. They are GREAT!! I have talked to him before on youtube and even emails. He helped me out a TON!!! Gave me so much info and tips that helped me out ALOT!! Such a nice person and helpful as all hell. I thank you yet again and to anyone that is thinking about asking him something. ASK!!! You will learn a ton and he will help you out ALOT!! One of the BEST ppl to ask about any stuff about this and other stuff in his videos

An Infusoria culture is usually ready to harvest within 10-14 days from the time you start it.
You’ve been such a help for me culturing live food in general. I’ve got scuds, daphnia going.
Just what I love to hear!
I'm growing it today. Thanks for this beautiful scientific tutorial. You're Awesome. 👌🏼✌🏼👏🏼
OMG! Thank you soooo much for this video! You have the absolute best video on this topic on all of UA-cam. I have watched all of them and wasted much time. I found your video and you answered all my questions and you are concise and informative. Thank you !! You got a new subscriber!
Thank you! I am delighted to know that it has helped you out! 😊👍 Thanks for subscribing!
It takes 10-14 days for a culture to mature and be ready to feed to your fry, so make sure to start it BEFORE your fish lay eggs. 👍
Aquarimax thank im going to try it
Is there a way to speed this up? My fish bred the day after I put up the infusion. It has some organisms already. But I need to hasten it. Any ideas?
Richard Harris Podolsky warmer temps can speed it up to some degree, but if you get it too warm it will kill the culture, I would suggest not going over the mid-80s F. If you have a chunk of Java moss handy, or a mature sponge filter, both will tend to have a thriving Infusoria culture on them already, and you can use those immediately.
Can I use other leaves?
@@Aquarimax I'm using Broccoli and cabbage to create one. I started today
I'm trying my first infusoria culture! I want an alternative to my vinegar eel cultures
Awesome! Infusoria are definitely less involved to harvest!
Simply Betta funny seeing u on this vid. Trying to culture infusoria for my betta fry. Love ur vids!
Lol...my idol is here🤣
Thanks You, Video was very helpful & easy to follow.
Beat video I have seen online & gave me lot confidence as it cleared all my doubts.
Keep the good work going...
Very informative and easy to understand...thanks for these insights...i love this video.
Excellent tutorial. You broke it down so well. Thank you.

Nice informative video! I subscribed and plan on using the cultures to feed Betta and gourami fry via a slow drip
FunctionBuilt-Aquatics Thank you! Are you going to post the Betta and Gourami fry on your channel?
Yes! I have Betta Hendra fry now that I can drip feed during the day. I'll set up and post a video when the culture is ready. The channel is FunctionBuilt-Aquatics thank you
Thanks for sharing!
For some reason I have such bad luck trying to culture infusoria, daphne or rotifers. I’ll give this a try now n hope I can get them to live and breed better than I have in the past. Thanks dude, keep up the good work
Philthy Tanks Thank you! I hope they work for you this time! 😊👍
Lovely information thanks man ,👍

well done and concise thanks
Thanks for watching!
THANK YOU SO MUCH; I never knew that it was so easy to grow an infusoria culture! Hopefully I can get this done quick enough to feed..😔 my gourami fry are already two days old and at the moment only eating powdered food
TiGeR _MoTh it takes a while for this to grow. If they are doing well with the powdered food, you might not want to bother with infusoria and just skip to BBS when they are big enough.
thank you for this video :)
Feme Camorahan you are very welcome! 👍
Your video is the best!
Laborer in the field Thank you! I am glad it is working for you! 😊👍
Right to the point great video
william T Thank you! What are you feeding? 👍
Will be tetra but none just yet keep up the good work
This is a older video, but a always helpful video for anyone who need food for their born swimming Betta Fishes. I never knew or heard this method until I randomly reach up something about Male Bettas only just a bit ago, and this food source came up. I don’t know pet stores like Petmarts, Petco, Petland, and some local city pet stores don’t sell live food for their customers, because that’s what they need most for when they want to breed their fishes. That’s what I hate most about some pet shops. It’s easier to buy it right there than buying online and wait for it to arrive at your door in idk how many days. Also for the most part, when people sell live food, they most likely only sell brine shrimp. Idk why though.
Oh my gosh I had so many culture jars going not knowing why I wasn't seeing more than few small organisms moving around in them. This explains everything, lol.
Phoenix Grimm Glad to help!
Infusoria is great for feeding daphnia and copepods as well. A lot of people who cultivate daphnia in asia will use decomposing vegetables like cabbage or manure to promote infusoria in daphnia cultures as the only food source. The way I've been promoting infusoria in my invertebrate aquarium is taking my plant cuttings and, instead of throwing them away, microwaving them and placing them back into the aquarium.
Sedghammer Good point, and a great way to repurpose plant cuttings! 😊👍
Can you make video on DAFNIA
AND FOLLOWING FOOD FOR BETA FRY. AS OER THEIR WEEKLY GROWTH
Hi! Great video u have, that's amazing. Does infusoria is good for labyrinth fish only? can it be used for angelfish or any cichlid?
Kristīne Koršakova Thank you! Infusoria can be used for many fish fry. Most egglayer fry in the hobby can start with Infusoria, although some fry are too small even for that. Most cichlids hatch large enough that they don’t need Infusoria, but you could offer it in the 2-3 after they become free-swimming. newly hatched brine shrimp are a great first food for all but the smallest cichlid fry.
Great Video. Thumbs up.
Thank you for watching...I always appreciate your comments!
Aquarimax It is a pleasure to watch information being shared with others. Thanks.
Thanx for a great video what is the ideal water temperature to propergate infusoria we are going
Into winter, water temperature are around 10 degree c , do I need a heater to propergate infusoria
Home Tab Thanks for watching! For best results within a reasonable time, I would say that room temperatures or a little warmer (somewhere between 21-26 C) works best for Infusoria. You would probably get some species to grow at lower temperatures, but much more slowly.
Thanks Aquarimax Pets for replay
will try infusoria culture.
Also will look for videos on vinegar eels if I find
And try that as well
Just wanted to know after how many week I can feed them with DAFNIA?
Thank in advance
LOG JHON I made an old video on Vinegar Eels, but the information is still good. When you can feed the fry with daphnia depends on the strain of daphnia, age of daphnia, and how fast your fish grows, which can vary a lot, so a time in weeks is difficult to provide, but roughly, after about a month, they should be able to eat smaller daphnia strains.
how about orange isopods?
Thanks for this video ! will it work with cabbage leaves ?
Probably will
How long can the infusoria be stored after the water clears? Thanks!😊
Would this work for a brackish tank?
Nice tutorial!
Forest Oasis good question! I have never tried a brackish infusoria culture. You could probably add freshwater infusoria as a good source to a slightly brackish tank.
is there any way to make green water ? i really need ur help .
Liked and subscribed
Usually about 10 days to 2 weeks. 👍
i have java moss in my fry tanks. i am trying to grow infusoria in a jar but not sure is it ready yet as its still a bit cloudy. will my fry have enough food in java moss?
Mama Diana Java moss will certainly help. Whether or not it will be enough depends largely on the moss to fry ratio. How many fry and how much moss do you have?
I can put in plastic bottles or is it necessary to use glass jar
Will some of the infusoria stay in your tank and breed? Would love some sort of live tiny fish food that can sustain fish if I’m away for a weekend or so
sunnysideup Infusorians tend to exist to some degree in any established aquarium. Live plants, especially mosses and similar plants, tend to harbor a good growth of Infusoria. Many fish will pick at the microorganisms present on the plants. 👍
quick question. I'm getting a crested gecko and was wondering what kind of isopods would be best for my vivarium for the gecko to eat, yet still be effective tank janitors? Any thoughts on what species .
If you want your gecko to be able to eat some of the isopods, yet still get the benefits of tank janitors, you might try powder blues (Porcellionides pruinosus). They are large enough that the gecko would likely see them as food, yet prolific enough that they could withstand some predation. That said, I would recommend culturing them outside the vivarium, so you can add them periodically to the vivarium.
What is the instrument you use in getting infusoria in a jar
Nice
Fascinating video! I want to offer my adult betta live food. Can an adult betta eat infusoria? He loves to hunt but he needs very little food.
Susan Staples An adult betta would not be interested in Infusoria. I would recommend a small daphnia culture in a jar...it would produce just the right amount for occasional daphnia snacks for your betta. 👍 is have a video on that...just search for daphnia jar aquarimax and it will come up.
what is the tool which you have used to extract the culture from Jar.
Suman Akkisetty I usually use a turkey baster. A pipette of any kind will work.
How long will they last after they have been well established? Do u just add more cooled "boiled veg." So the always have food supplies?
Aquatic Living I haven't tried that, although it might work. I think I've just seeded new cultures with a dose from a mature culture...quicker results that way than you get with the original culture
Can you use spinach and my fry have already hatched so will I be able to feed it to them still after the infusoria mature?
Diana Leanos Spinach should work, but it is likely that the fry will be too old to benefit from it much if you start it now.
Can you just put everything in a microwave berfore adding the aquarium water?
Hello. I like your video. I try it at my home. But can't say that infosuria are produce or not. Really don't know how infosuria look in jar. Kindly help me.
neelam aslam Glad the video helped! It can be difficult to see infusoria without a microscope, but in you shine a bright light on the water in the culture, and you use a magnifying glass, you may be able to see tiny specks moving in the water...depending on which species you have, and how sharp your vision is. A microscope is best, then you will know for sure.
Does aquarium net works for separating the infusoria from water just like daphnia??
Unfortunately not...they are too small. 👍 A turkey baster works best ime
Thanks for the slow drip tip good idea.
Glad to hear it was useful! 👍
Aquarimax I just started 5 culture how long till i start seeing some infusoria?
+Srib it depends on temperature, food source, and how rich your starter culture was. In general, with a microscope, you should start seeing them within 3-4 days, but they won't be ready to harvest for 1-2 weeks. 10 days is a good general estimate.
Aquarimax Thank you, I live in thailand so I've just left the glass jars outside, I used a filter from my tank and some matured pond water.
+Srib you have a great environment for infusoria then...you should get good yields pretty fast. Be on the lookout for potential fry predators in the pond water such as hydra and dragonfly nymphs. What species of fry are you raising?
Hi can we keep 2 weeks old fry with 3dy old fry together on same aquarium ?
Not generally, as the older fry may harm or even eat the younger ones.
Can i use infusoria for tiger barbs? I have trouble with culturjng mosquito and i am trying to culture whiteworm currently but is infusoria big enough for tiger barbs?
Bangla Warlock Al-Black Bangla infusoria would not be of much interest to adult tiger barbs, but they are great for tiger Barb fry of the appropriate age.
Can i use asparagus beans leaf? I have the plant at home and is not treated with chemicals.
fathima beevi I am not familiar with that species, but if it is nontoxic it should work.
I started a culture, after a week I don't know are there any infusoria but I see some micro worm types something. Are they safe for fry to feed?
If they appear to be the appropriate size for your fry, they are most likely safe to feed.
can I use millipedes as tank janitors instead for the crested tank?
+randomposter0323 I have heard of people doing that, but I would hesitate to do so because millipedes can exude toxic substances. I keep millipedes, but not with my Cresties. 😀
Thanks i wanted to make one for just seeing microorganisms.
PS: might feed to my Fish
shelly la tortuga Both very good reasons for an Infusoria culture! 👍
Hey update on my culture and it was a success! Now my question is could i put a blanched veggie on my culture to reproduce again?
Julius Wicked glad to hear it! Adding a blanched veggie can help extend the life of the culture for a while. I would also recommend setting up a fresh culture, and using so,è water from the old culture instead of aquarium water to seed it....that should give it a jumpstart.
would there be any problem doing this in a larger container? would a trickle from an air line be needed in a bigger setup or simply make a mess? Also does it smell?
Ill have to use a vented lid with floss in the holes. my partner wont take it well if it smells.
Linden Edwards I have never used a really large container, but I imagine it would work...but I would try a fairly shallow container. Air would be optional. It does have a smell to it, no denying that...
@@Aquarimax right. Thanks for getting back to me.
Larger yes. But not much deeper. Excellent.
can i use scrached plastic bottle for infusoria culture
Fishy Joshua maybe, but I would wait until the water had cooled before putting it on.
Do you know, why I culture the same way for 3 days, but I just see only few infusorias in my jar? Also, I did another jar fiew weeks ago, I only see very few?
Sir, it's been about a month since I started the culture, my Bettas just laid eggs, can I use the liquid which is one month old ? The water is clear now and the vegetable particles have settled down and the odour smells really bad .
elite rowdy It is hard to say without looking at it under a microscope, but it is likely there is still some infusoria in there
is it possible to maintain an infusoria population in 1 jar? if yes, what do you feed it... do u add more blanched vege or aquarium water, and how often?
Low Tech Aquarium It might be possible, if you remove detritus from the bottom and add new vegetables and water every week or so. I would actually recommend keeping two jars running. As one nears the end of production, clean it out and start it over, then seed it with the thriving Infusoria in the other culture. That way, you should nearly always have a producing culture going.
this food is help growthing fast ?.to my betta fry .only 4 days old
Niya Fiya At 4 days old, your bettas will, eat Infusoria, but will, soon need to switch to baby brine shrimp.
How long DO we have to feed BETA FRY with infusoria .
What are alternative to infusoria for BETA FRY.
CAN RICE FLOUR WORK FOR BETA FRY AS FOOD?
CAN YOU MAKE VIDEO ONDAFNIA
LOG JHON Betta fry can be fed vinegar eels or baby brine shrimp as a first food instead of Infusoria. If you use baby brine shrimp, not all of the fry will, survive, but the strongest will. I would not recommend rice flour, I suspect the nutrient balance would be unsuitable for betta fry. I have made several videos on culturing daphnia, here is one: ua-cam.com/video/ca3x8Pmuh74/v-deo.html
Whats the best temperature so infusoria to thrive?
Kadong Estimo I would say high 70s to low 80s F, or even a bit warmer.
What are the thinks did you used
Lettuce, peas, green beans
Could I do the water part backwards?( put tank water first then boiling water)
jay56603 Good question, but unfortunately, that would probably kill most or all of the Infusoria in the tank water.
How long infusoria stays alive in the jar?
I am going to try this out and i hope it dosent stink cos my wife will kick me out ... its winter and cold here can i put it in a shed with a lightbulb and what temp thanks .... what else can u make tgats not hittng the pocket and can u make video much appreciated for this
dj Stevie Kidd This does have an unpleasant odor, I am afraid. If you can keep it in the 70s and 80s it will be ok. 👍
@@Aquarimax gd gd i have a sun light i have when i had a bearded dragon so hope that will give the heat plus my shed is insulated gd
Nao sei o que vc fslou mas gostariade com vc consegue fazer esse ifusorio obrigada Brasil Rj
Eu ficaria feliz em ajudá-lo com isso.
primeiro, ferva a água.
Em seguida, despeje a água fervente sobre folhas de alface ou outros vegetais.
agora, deixe a água esfriar.
Is it a bad idea if I leave the jar outdoors on my balcony? Temps are 80-90 outdoors with probably 6 hours of direct sunlight. I’ve tried this twice now and it smells after 3-4 days super bad but when I inspect the jar under a microscope I don’t see anything moving indicating there are no infusoria present
That is probably too
Much light/heat.
i want to speed it up, happy tank accident, my white skirt tetra spawned and i siphoned all visible eggs i could see and transfer to glass flower vase, after only a day they hatched and i idk what to feed them, they are so tiny, i started culture using squeezed spnge filter water, blanced cabbage and added small amount of yeast, do u think i could get infusoria in 3 days after they consumed their egg sac? thnk you
The squeezed sponge filter should help accelerate the process, it is worth a try. Also, if you can get a bunch of Java moss from an established aquarium, that will be full of infusoria too.
Very informative video. I've been "reproducing" infusoria for months now using many jars. Everything went normal --- water gets cloudy white then clears after a few days. However, one of my jars turned red/pink after being cloudy. Is this normal? What might be the cause of this?
海棠晴 hmmm...that is interesting...the red/pink color could be due to a number of different things. Have you looked at it under a microscope?
@@Aquarimax Sadly, I do not have any kind of microscope, thought some suggests it's some kind of red/brown algae infestation (not sure either). But I don't see any fuzzy red films on the sides of the jar... just the water itself being deep red.
Side notes:
The vegetable matter is still in decaying stage (smells really bad right now) and water is cloudy red. Should I toss the culture and start again?
海棠晴 I would toss the culture and start again. If it is some kind of cyanobacterial bloom, it could be dangerous for your fry.
what proplam i continue the inflousouirea to 1 monts?
Niya Fiya the bettas would not get enough food...Infusoria are only good for a week or so.
I happen to watch a youtube video that they put yeast into their infusoria culture. And I follow just that but I put a little too much because the water is cloudy. Do I have to start a new one or just let it be?
haris muqri I would try to keep it going, if the water is a little cloudy. That is normal in an Infusoria culture.
@@Aquarimaxok I will thanks for the tips.
Okay, what if you got some live plants inside the fish tank already and it's been there for a long time will it spawn some Infusoria, because i already have baby fry betta about 3 days from now......
kou yang Yes, well-established plants will provide some infusoria, especially plants like Java moss, but probably not enough to last an entire spawn of bettas very long.
kou yang Yes, well-established plants will provide some infusoria, especially plants like Java moss, but probably not enough to last an entire spawn of bettas very long.
Can you name any other vegetable that could be used instead.
Dried duckweed works well.
hi how can i keep my infusoria untill next 3 weeks i cultured infusoria last 2 weeks and they already build colony they are so many but im still conditioning my betta to breed this coming next 2 weeks
emzon09 if you set up separate jars as Infusoria cultures and let them sit for just long enough for the water to become cloudy, you can add some Infusoria from your existing culture...decreasing the time needed to make a new culture. That way you can ensure that you will have a producing culture when your fry are ready. 👍
Aquarimax thank you very much for the info
emzon09 you are very welcome, I am happy to help! 😊👍
How long does infusoria culture last before they die
is this really have bad smell? i made one jar but the smell is really bad.. i dont know if this is ok? any answer is very helpful.. Thank you
Myra Natividad it usually smells for several days as it matures 👍
@@Aquarimax Thank you so much for the info..
how many weeks does it takes to be fully developed?
FOXstrat - Gaming & Tutorials Good question-- approximately 10 days to 2'weeks.
how much weeks It will take for infusoria to form
Theertha S Babu usually between 1.5 and 2 weeks. 👍
How many days does it take to completely form infosoria
Arti Kolambe about 10 days 👍
do i have to close the lid? please response
You should leave the lid open for gas exchange 😀
how many days for the whole process to reach full maturity?
Mark Bajet it depends on temperature and various factors, but usually with 10 days to two weeks. 👍
Would this work on raddish peeled skin? Please I need answer :>
I have never tried that...
Can i use another vege? Like cucumber, cabbage, and a banana leaf maybe?
Proabably!
I'm starting to get a constant flow of eggs from my danios. How long does 1 culture last?
Animal Addiction it depends on various factors, so I suggest getting a rotation going-if you start a culture every week for a month, and restart the oldest culture as it slows down,!you should have plenty.
@@Aquarimax oh OK makes sense.
how to make the slow drip thing
Paps Raven tie a loose knot in the airline tubing, and then start a siphon. Losses or tighten the knot as needed to regulate the flow. 👍
hey uh I saw some ppl commenting about worms in thier cultures, i plan do for my fry, i have question can fry eat those worms? are they have parasites? sorry i have bad english
oh and one more question if use big jar how know how much leaves to use?
kkthepony I have never encountered worms in my Infusoria cultures, and as far as I know, the only way to introduce parasites to your fish from an Infusoria culture is to use water from an aquarium containing parasites to start your culture...and even then, it might not happen.
Aquarimax ok thank you! so if i accidentally feed the fry a worm do you think thet will eat it?
If it is appropriately sized, yes. Whether that is a good thing or not depends on the type of worm. I feed my fry microworms with great success.
Aquarimax ok thank you!
Will larger bettas enjoy this? I have a young one that obviously doesn’t need such small food but i wonder if hed like it anyway!
Jesse Lox good question! Once bettas have been feeding for several days, they outgrow infusoria and will probably not show any interest. 👍
Aquarimax Pets thank you for replying!!
Jesse Lox you’re welcome! 👍
Can we do same in plastic bottle
ROHAN S The only problem with plastic is that the boiling water might cause it to melt...
Does the rotting veggie water spoil or affect my tank water? like clash with my tanks bacteria?
Zachary Damien good question! As long as you avoid adding the decomposing vegetable matter to the aquarium, just add the infusoria-laden water, and you don't overfeed, infusoria shouldn't cause water quality problems.
@@Aquarimax Just to add, if you have briggs aka diffusa snails (mystery snails), not only will they enjoy the rotting plant matter, but they themselves are a source of infusoria.
La Bella Great point! The first time I ever heard about that type of snail was in an old book back in the 80s when I was a kid. They were referred to as ‘infusoria’ and ‘mystery’ snails, for that reason. 😊👍
La Bella why are they called mystery snails??
Good video but why did you sterilize the vegetables beforehand? I mean, the infusoriae feed on bacteriae, and the added aquarium water is not sterile anyway.
5mnz7fg Great question! The purpose of the boiling water is not to sterilize the vegetables, but to help break down the cell walls of the vegetables, which speeds up the bloom of bacteria, which in turn speeds up the growth of the Infusoria.
I need help. I got alot of micro critters that were swimming and wriggling in my fish tank as i had neglected it for a month and alot of algae and infusoria around as there was no animals big enough to eat them. But i recently did a water change and added 4 guppies into my 15 gallon. Now i barely see them at all
Aquarimax actually i can see extremely small micro-organisms now. I bet i could start a culture. Btw how long did it take you to cycle your tank? It took me only 1 month for my 15 gallon and only 1 week for my 2.5 gallon tank as i had bacteria in a bottle. Thanks btw this video help me alot like and subscribe!
Swazi Hitler Each tank takes a different length of time. It is usually about 1 month to 6 weeks, unless there are lot of plants, and then it can be nearly instant.
How many days required to culture infusoria??
Only pets 10-14
