  • Twycross Zoo has a new arrival, a rare bonobo baby! Just one day old! Mum is bringing her baby out in the open. So everybody can get a glimpse of the little one. She sits down, the baby has a little yawn before mum decides it's better to move to get out of the sun during this heatwave. She moves a couple more times holding her baby tight. Scratching her head and looking around. When it's time for some refreshments from the staff, mum gets her yoghurt bottle filled with lemon tea ice. She has a few nibbles, but then discards the bottle in favour of looking after her infant.
She's a really good mum, taking care to move as the sun moves and constantly holding her tight to her chest. When mum gets thirsty she moves to the pond. Watch out for the baby to open its eyes! When she's finished on the pool, it's time for some food and she takes a bit chunk out of that aubergine.

0:58 She looks at her baby the way a human mother does. I never tire of apes’ marvels.

Let's hope she cares better for her baby than most humans do theirs!

What a lovely, sensible, smart mum. Did you see how she supported the baby, while she was taking a drink from the pool. Also, she kept him in the shade, but let him get a little sun, and she very gently, and discreetly, showed him to her friends. Great video, SV.. Thank you very much.

Is this Mum 1st baby? She seems very confident in handling her daughter. Way she held the baby when the other was looking. She had enough sence to keep the baby out of the sun. Congratulations to Tywcross zoo👏👏 🍾🎉🎊 a beautiful n precious gift. 👑🐵

Yes they're the closest human relative and humans still kill them so little left in the wild

🥰 What a committed mom! She’s so serious and intense here! No sign of the more casual, laid back personality we usually see with the lovable hedonistic bonobos! 😄
Question to anyone willing to respond…
I know the baby is brand new but don’t they instinctively know how to cling to mom from the moment they arrive? Or is that only with orangutans and gorillas? I’m far from an expert, just curious based on what I have seen as far as primate documentaries and videos on YT. Unless I missed it I saw no attempt whatsoever to grab onto mom’s hair with upper or lower limbs. Near the end when mom jumps up and sprints yet again, you can see the infant’s entire body dangling and swinging. It just looked rather worrying. The good news is that if there is a problem the baby has a much better chance of acceptance and survival in captivity. But hopefully I am just being ignorant and it’s normal for bonobo infants not to start clinging immediately.
On another note…I was wondering if this video had been shot at a higher speed than that of reality. Mom just kept kind of spastically jumping up and flying from spot to spot versus their usual casual strolling pace. I quickly realized she was just being hyper-cautious with her precious little bundle and found it quite endearing. Hopefully soon she’ll get her normal chilled out bonobo style back. And I’m sure she’ll have plenty of group members volunteering to babysit if she needs a break.
Thanks for another fantastic, joy producing video! ❤❤❤

I have seen the comment " they are so human like" and I'm sure I have said it too, but I was just thinking we shouldn't insult the primates 😁😅😛 because a lot of times they surpass us

Bonobos are such peaceful creatures, completely opposite of chimpanzees. Bonobos have sex to solve disputes instead of fighting like chimpanzees. Me and my wife are like bonobos, because after arguments we have long, long makeup sex. Maybe me and my wife were bonobos in our previous life?.😂😂😂
