Thanks to Dev for making the time to chat. I've been listening to his music since I was 15 years old, and for him to also be a super chill guy on top of being an insane musician is a very pleasant surprise. :)
Dev has been my favourite musician since 1997. I saw Strapping play at a tiny venue in Glasgow in 98, there was many 40-50 people there and it was mindblowing. Thanks for the great interview/chat, I particularly enjoyed the look on your face when he was talking about the Ruby Quaker Spaceship jams.
My first ever metal concert was Testament, Napalm Death, and SYL. I had never heard of Strapping Young Lad before and didn’t know what to expect with a name like that. Completely blew me away and have been a fan ever since. 🤘 Also: I love Dean’s There Will Be Blood shirt at the beginning of the video. 👍
I saw Devin for the first time last year when he toured with Animals as Leaders and Dream Theater. He was honestly the highlight for me, even though I was there mainly for AAL. Incredible entertainer and frontman, even if his music isn't my thing.
I couldn't agree more. I was disappointed with Dreams set list. Animals stole the show. But I was blown away and impressed with Devin from not knowing his music
Wasn't ready for that lemon party reference. Also this was a really fucking phenomenal interview from both sides here. GREAT insightful questions with great insightful answers and no one trying to talk over the other person. As an artist myself, visual not music, I really really connected with so much of what was discussed here. I ESPECIALLY connect with the "I do my best work when I'm not thinking about it" and honestly that is what music does for me as a visual artist.... it's something that creatively engages my brain but lets me disconnect from my immediate self and allows the inner stuff to freely flow to the surface and then I feel more like I'm just following whatever is flowing through rather than trying to force something into existence.
This man is a Gem! Got to talk with him at the Kiesel event and our brief talk really inspired me and was a really great prospective... we sort of held up the line talking a little too much and I'll never forget that experience and what he told me.
Not gonna lie, I wanna live Devin's life. Just wake up every day, throw on a furry sweater and just make endless music all day with no fucks given in perpetuum. I know it's more complicated than that, by that's like my fantasy life. Mad respect.
My cousin turned me on to SYL and Devin in the mid-90's. He and our other close friend joined his fan club when he started Hevy Devy and started doing solo albums. Devin and his wife used to send out handwritten xmas cards every year to all in his "fanclub" he kept that up until probably 10yrs ago when it just became too much. His fanbase grew way larger than i think he ever thought possible.
what a wonderful conversation, totally engaging from start to finish. I'll admit I've never been a big fan of SYL or Devin's work but also haven't listened to it much. He comes across so genuine as a person and I want to hear everything he has to say as it's fascinating. This interview and the Beato one really opened my eyes to him and I'd like to go back and check out his work again. really appreciate sharing this conversation with us!
im absolutely losing it devin is my favorite musician of all time (i count all of his stuff as one band) and archspire is my second favorite band this is incredible
Been listening to Dev when I found him in 97 from an off chance recommendation. Since then, complete adoration for the guy. I am not a fan of his latest work, as I find it's fallen to some other level of intention...I was more for the suffering and pain and frustration of his younger days. And his path down his introspective stream of conscious can be tough to digest as he over explains certain things...but this interview is back to his day to day type personality and that's what I am all about. Dev can be all things and nothing all at once, and it can be a lot to take in...but I just love his regular conversations without all that fluff, and this is one of those types of conversations. Thanks Dean! Not a ton to be proud of in Canada these days, but you guys definitely add a lot to this country's output in talent and music...and comedy to be honest. You're both goofs and I love it :) It's been an absolute trip listening to Dev through my formation, my own personal path, and where I've had to go or found myself unceremoniously put. It's not nothing. I miss those days as much as I curse them. Cheers!
@Randscorporation I had tickets for the Empath KC show. Obviously, it never happened. However, Dev sang happy birthday to me for my 50th in a Cameo, and my Teambuilt Stormbender will be here Monday, so I'm pretty stoked...
Great interview. I've been loving your videos the past few months. Very little posturng and everything just brings out a really heartfelt appreciation for music.
Seriously Dean! Why you gotta play so many damn notes? I'm trying to casually jam an archspire track and I'm like "again with this guy and his freaking notes"
"Dont trip on the piss jug on your way out" great thing to say for bad auditions Its like flossing the brain listening to Devin - lovely chat with some fine musicians
I feel like a long philosophical treatise could be written about the distinction between when something is a conversation piece, and when it's just a jug of piss 👌
I was fortunate enough (and old enough) to have seen the Sex and Religion tour. I've been a fan ever since. And to top off this fandom and show my undying love for Devin Townsend, I just bought a Framus Teambuilt Stormbender. It's on its way...
@TheFinalEffortDrums I'm looking forward as far as I can. I'm betting it'll be here Monday or Tuesday. Absolutely stoked!! It's a 2021 Nirvana Black high gloss. It's got Devin's autograph on an extra backplate and again on the COA. Dream stuff...
Devin sounds incredibly intelligent, thoughtful, and educated. What a delightful interview. How did you, a weirdo 8-string wizard in a band that fills every available space with a note, manage to bag a video call with Devin Townsend? Tongue-in-cheek aside, a great interview and I loved what you prompted the conversation into. This is great.
That's so funny cuz i got some empties i use sometimes so I totally relate and the thing he says about pretending to care about theremin to make a zombie themed track funny shit man
Bought like 1000 vhs and 900 dvds. The first and second season of how its made on dvd was in there. Posted it for 80 bucks, the going rate.. gone within hours!? 😂
I still have a autographed floor tom skin Gene gifted me after a SYL show in 02' in Denver. Ended up on their bus till 4am that night. Devin secluded himself in the back of the bus though. He wasn't in a good place back then.
Waiting for the first video where Dean is playing not a kiesel. Interested to see where else he goes, the market for production model 8 string guitars honestly sucks. The only one I would consider is the schecter John Browne sig. nothing else comes close that’s not custom
Thanks to Dev for making the time to chat. I've been listening to his music since I was 15 years old, and for him to also be a super chill guy on top of being an insane musician is a very pleasant surprise. :)
Devy has been nothing but amazing for representing music in b.c.
I too, like to piss in a jug! @DeanLamb

He's been a musician for 60 years?!?!
When I saw Devin he talked about depression and farting in between songs. One of a kind.
Devin is a complete one off genius. Nobody like him in metal. I, among many others greatly appreciate his works. Fuck yea Dean! 🔥🤘
Thanks for doing this. So much good here. I love Devin to death.
Agreed, I walked out on Dream Theater but was there for AAL and Devy
Love Devin's perspective on life, and he's always so good at communicating it. Thanks for the great content Dean!

Been a fan of Devin for almost 30 years, he always puts a smile on my face and makes us Canadians soo proud. A true genius.
WAY OF THE ROAD BUBS
These are the conversations I'd love to see more of, hugely insightful and hilarious, awesome job dude
Not gonna lie, I wanna live Devin's life. Just wake up every day, throw on a furry sweater and just make endless music all day with no fucks given in perpetuum. I know it's more complicated than that, by that's like my fantasy life. Mad respect.
Devin is so inspiring creatively! Can’t listen without wanting to write something. 10/10 juxtapositions.
Such an insightful conversation
That's my GOAT! So glad he's back on the channel.
Very happy to be a fly on the wall for that conversation. Thanks, Dean and Devin!

I bought some stuff from Hevy Devy Records in the early 00s and got a couple of Xmas cards too!

This is one of the best and most interesting interviews with Devin. Thank you so much, subscribing immediately
ahh, this made me so happy, thank you. that was an awesome chat to listen to, you have a great rapport with Dev
Really chill interview. I hope you do these chats with him on a regular basis.
im absolutely losing it devin is my favorite musician of all time (i count all of his stuff as one band) and archspire is my second favorite band this is incredible
this is great. love devin. everything he does is amazing
I have Literally been waiting for this since i saw the short. Im so happy right now that this happened. I LOVE(?) Devin
I swear this podcast was one of the best. I could only imagine what a journey it would be taking a visit in his brain...
Love his new album and can't wait for the Moth.

Devin seems to make albums in pairs that balance each other out. Powernerd is supposed to be the light hearted, simple counter to The Moth.
@@brycewilson1741 Lyrically, Powernerd is very much not light-hearted. Especially the second half. I personally love it, but hey - to each their own.
Devin is amazing!!! Thank you for this video!!!
Great conversation! It's always great when you try to shut 'er down, and the conversation just keeps going.
you and devin combined is just the best, love me some devin!
Missed out on a meet and greet with Devin back at the start of Covid. Seems like a great dude to have a conversation with
@Randscorporation
I had tickets for the Empath KC show.
Obviously, it never happened.
However, Dev sang happy birthday to me for my 50th in a Cameo, and my Teambuilt Stormbender will be here Monday, so I'm pretty stoked...
This interview is HILARIOUS!
This is the best thing. Two of my favorite people in music. Thanks so much for this Dean and Devin.... Made my entire week
Devin just drops truth bomb after bomb with every interview
My 2 favourite guitar players on one video. Damn Dean stop it.
Devin is such a cool dude. Great episode! 🔥🔥🔥🤘🎸
Thanks for this Dean! We love our Hevy Devy.
Great interview. I've been loving your videos the past few months. Very little posturng and everything just brings out a really heartfelt appreciation for music.
This is one of the best interviews with Devy I’ve seen in a while!
Protect Devin at all cost! I love this dude!
Devin!! Hell yeah ! Loving the videos and can’t wait to see you guys on tour

We're so close to thanksgiving I was hoping he'd have the dancing turkey hat on
woah my two favourite bald people in one video?!?! Now this is what i've been needing
No, YOU'RE weird, Mr. I play lots of notes!
Seriously Dean! Why you gotta play so many damn notes? I'm trying to casually jam an archspire track and I'm like "again with this guy and his freaking notes"
Townsend is hilarious 😂
There are many peculiarities of many creative individuals..... Dean.
Great interview, thanks!
I love all of Devs interviews but this one was extra enjoyable

This is Soo good had me cracking the whole time. P Jug, Meryl Streep shitting.
SYL and Fear Factory...pretty sure Soilwork as well...2006 at the CCC. Kick ass.
they sure bonded over the fart jokes. it makes sense after watching the drummer audition videos lmao
"Dont trip on the piss jug on your way out" great thing to say for bad auditions
Its like flossing the brain listening to Devin - lovely chat with some fine musicians
I feel like a long philosophical treatise could be written about the distinction between when something is a conversation piece, and when it's just a jug of piss 👌

It's got Devin's autograph on an extra backplate and again on the COA.
Dream stuff...
Devin, nik, dean. The Canadian triangle.
They're both from the Vancouver area
Pissin in a jug is where its at!! 😂❤
You’re not cool unless you piss in a jug 🤣
dev is my hero
Came for the prog, stayed for the piss jug
That's so funny cuz i got some empties i use sometimes so I totally relate and the thing he says about pretending to care about theremin to make a zombie themed track funny shit man
People from cananda are really weird 😂
And i absolutely love it
The "brownie points" pun... lmao
Sure, sure, yeah, sure, yeah. Sure, sure. Yeah. Sure
National treasure. Print him on money
He's Canadian.....
@@breathinglead871 that he is. Dean (and me) too
@intodevnull7984 Is Canadian money even worth anything? I would find that as an affront to the artistic legacy of Dev.
@@breathinglead871 yeah we write the amount it's worth right on it
Dev is my God. You are little jesus. Thanks for this awesome interview
extremely cool dudes alert
Bought like 1000 vhs and 900 dvds. The first and second season of how its made on dvd was in there. Posted it for 80 bucks, the going rate.. gone within hours!? 😂
Dean and Devin collab album please!
He reminds me of the Turtle Club guy in Master of Disguise lol
I think the family comment was really interesting.
Fuck yeah bud
Guitar at 48:45
I still have a autographed floor tom skin Gene gifted me after a SYL show in 02' in Denver. Ended up on their bus till 4am that night. Devin secluded himself in the back of the bus though. He wasn't in a good place back then.

I also think Devin Townsend is weird in my opinion.
This video is awesome btw.
He paid $50 for a piss jugg???
He could've just used a juice bottle lol
It's the Way of The Road, boys.
I’ve been looking for a new therapist, is Devin accepting new patients?
The Original Pee Jug is 20 bucks, right now
Tosin. Then Devin. Wow. Acquiring tastefull buds along the way ... next should be Petrucci. Then Max Ostro. 😮...
Howard hughes vibes
