Very cool rundown. Surpised to see snares and other kits in the same room with overhead mics or any overall room mics. I would've thought they could resonate and bleed into the overheads. I learned something new today. 👍
Great guys! I actually learned a lot of the micing stuff after starting to use an ekit and accidentally ordering the edrums with a EZDrummer2 license. Man... since then... and switching to Superior Drummer 3 I got to understand the crucial importance of the OH and ambient mics. Damn, I think they are more important than the close mics. Jakob did an awesome job on the Duality I and II EZX's and the Big Stage EZX. This guy loves the ambience mics. Thanks for sharing this!
Thank you. And yes, I really do, I think getting the overheads and rooms right really can tie a sound together. Also, if you didn’t know, Darby is the one drumming on Big Stage!
@topfloorstudiosSWE I knew he was the sampling guy. I developed a very bad EZX/SDX collecting syndrome. I am just a hobby musician. Physicist to earn a living. So, I really enjoy the acoustics and engineering stuff. I think, sometime I need to switch from the medical physics to audio stuff.
20:20 I don't have any of that fancy equipment, nor do I know what most of that stuff does, BUT I am playing with that pick on the console as I watch this lol
Great run down guys! Hope to see you at Namm...we have some new "surprises" for you so come by. We'll be in the same spot ACC North building. Wonderful video! Best always! Kat
Hi guys...loved this video...can you share your room dimensions...?...I'm looking at building a studio here in middle Tennessee and love the look and feel of these rooms...!...Thanks...!!!
Killer stuff Darby! Hey for pedals you should definitely check out ACD Darwin pedals. So many options, colors, setups and the best linkage bar I have ever used (I own the linkage for both my tama speed cobras and would never go back to stock) Hopefully see you again in Boston!
How did you handle phase with all three sets of overheads? did you focus on the furthest set first and then mono the next closest set to match and then follow that process inward until you got to the kick? Once the kick matches the overheads, you can match the rest of the kit sequentially from there to make sure all the phasing is aligned. I mean, as far as I know. I'm still learning drum miking.
Well, things sometimes sounds best OUT of phase. For instance, using several mics on the same source can be used to phase out certain frequencies, in the kick for instance, which can be very interesting. There's only one set of overheads, and they were measured to the snare as well as the crashes. Not the kick. After that, the close mics on toms were phase checked to the overheads. Often, i prefer the kick to be phased out of the overheads so the lowend don't take over. The other mics are different ambience mics. One "high up" pair, one spaced ambience pair, and one XY pair. No M/S this time.
Many thanks for doing this @Darby bud 😎 I'm obsessed with Drum and Studio tour video's, as is everyone! 🙂 Did you use a Tama Bell Bronze for tracking 'Ubelia'? Massive sounding drums on that record! 😍😎 \m/
We did use a tama for a couple of songs. But unfortunately I can’t remember which ones. I will have a look through some vids and see if I can work it out.
Do you happen to know which DS kit that is? (in terms of shell construction, I was just curious, I can see that it's a rebel custom shop, but was interested in the shells... they sound really deep and boomy so i would guess maple/mahogany)
Ok this is probably a stupid question but does having all those awesome snares stored in the live room cause any unwanted noise? I’m loving that Hive snare you’re using! I’d never heard of them prior.
Really interesting. Thanks man. Love the detail. Jakob's insight super cool. How do the Roswell's stack up against and old factory matched pair of 414s ? I use KM184 for the spot micing. Will investigate the mylars. The 91 equivalent: Have you tried the Heil PR40 as well ? Getting some really good results. Also for the snare top also love my Telefunken M80. Love the mic placement discussion. Absolutely. Have made huge mix changes by positioning adjustments. I also have moveable treatments I can use for local adjustment. At Jakob: How do you find the SSL stacks about against the API console ? Absolutely relate to the detail. Every single detail matters. Adding up to the cummulative product.
Hey man. I haven’t used a set of 414’s in a long time. They used to show up on everything but seem to be lesser used in the studios I go to. I was using a set of KM184’s in my studio for overheads. They were nice but the Roswells destroy them in sound. I find I can now base a mix from the overheads. With the Neumanns I would always end up blending the overheads to the close mics. Currently I Have the Neumanns on hats and ride. I can’t recommend the Roswells enough. As for Telefunkenn they just don’t do it for me! I’ve not been a fan of the M80. They are great. Just not for me. Maybe I need to check other mics in their range. Matt from Roswell has some great videos where he discusses different mics. He’s so knowledgable. Well worth checking them out.
How come all the acoustic guys say use a rectangular room and set the desk up on the longer side but when I see these pro studios their shallow with big ass mains built-in. I know it must be pretty good acoustically but all that mumbo-jumbo about small rooms in base build up is Not necessarily wrong but must be overstated.
I love listening to Passionate PowerNerds!!!
now that's a thorough rundown. love it! can't wait to hear the final product!
Great video Darby - can’t wait to hear it all. I hope translating Devin’s crazy drum parts didn’t fry your noggin’ too much!
I just made them even more complicated!
Wow, beautiful studio.

I’ve dampened them all, including the snare wires.
Beat me to it! I just posed the same question.
If you dampen them correctly, they’re very well behaved :)
I really liked this!!👍🏼
Love this dude! Thank you
This record is going to be amazing
awesome!And cool dude too
Solo quedara esperar esta gran y elegante obra maestra!!! Un disco que por mucho tiempo esperamos.
Saludos desde Argentina, siempre te esperamos de.

See you there!! Can't wait to see what you have in store for us! The Kelly Shu is the best drum product I didn't realise I needed!
Yay, see you there!
Hi guys...loved this video...can you share your room dimensions...?...I'm looking at building a studio here in middle Tennessee and love the look and feel of these rooms...!...Thanks...!!!
It's a very unique room. I think it's like 18 feet height, 40 feet length and 13-15 feet across. Not completely sure, but something like that.

I will check them out. Cheers.
I see oriental china, I press like. A man of taste
Best china known to humanity!

You nailed it. Maple Mahogany. My main kits from British Drum Company are Birch and Birch/Mahogany.
Ok this is probably a stupid question but does having all those awesome snares stored in the live room cause any unwanted noise? I’m loving that Hive snare you’re using! I’d never heard of them prior.
All the snares are muted with material so there’s no resonance.

What is the ceiling height in the live/drum room...?
18-ish feet

VOLA RECORDED HERE?
Haha yes. Good spotting!
