There is nothing wrong with natural hair. Natural hair is beautiful but we have to also acknowledge and admit that natural hair CAN look unkempt and ungroomed. With this specific woman her hair did look wild and like she just rolled out of bed and went straight to work and I don't think anyone is wrong for pointing that out. Yes she is allowed to wear her hair anyway she chooses. It's her hair at the end of the day. However, people are also allowed to have their opinions about it. We will never live in a world where judgement and criticism, good or bad, does not exist. It's a part of human nature and human survival.

Also they don’t divide their hair into sections like twists etc so that’s another reason. I agree. I think natural hair is acceptable is all it's forms. Her hair is clearly styled. I shared other styles in this video including with straight hair that isn't exactly ideal for workplace. I don't think exempting type 4 hair from this is the way to go. I get that it's the most discriminated against hair type but accepting one's self doesn't mean there's no room for improvement!

I have a couple of texturist acquaintances. One randomly said oh your daughters hair looks like locs! This woman never wears her natural hair in its curly state. My childs hair is way longer than her daughters is. Another keeps trying to encourage me with a Brazilian Blow Out. Her besties either have no edges (from constant wigs and little care) or have the ugly thick gray lace across their head. Help them out not me

Hi Jay here, Could It be a mental health issue. Its been very prevalent during these challenging times. People are experiencing nervous breakdowns now more than ever b4. Even on the job people are loosing it for a number of reasons. We are not all built the same. Some can handle stress better than others. Just a thought n if thats the issue i feel for her. Someone mentioned how white women still need to wash and comb their hair took presentable so there’s no excuse for this woman to look like this. This woman most likely had to wash her hair to twist it out like this and some of you are still in the comments saying it looks dirty…you need to sit with why you consider kinky hair dirty when it’s not done to fit the European standard if beauty or professionalism. The challenge with the take about white women still needing to do xyz to look presentable is that we are STILL using them as the standard AND the process of washing and combing takes them a fraction of the time it takes us. And having done these two easy steps makes them quickly seen as “professional”. A Black woman with kinky hair has to take more time to MANIPULATE our hair to achieve the same acknowledgment of “professionalism” they do in just those two easy steps. Their hair is already the standard so the effort to manipulate it to be “professional” is very minimal. The kinkiest of us find it takes hours to achieve what they do in minutes. THAT is the problem. Our hair must be manipulated with excessive products and styling to be seen as kept. Let’s not fool ourselves about what effort looks like on both sides and how our hair perceived as professional or beautiful if not styled to the high heavens.
Every time you put a comb in your hair, you 'manipulate' it. You can choose to leave it unmanipulated outside of work, but at work it's not too much to ask that you show up with your hair looking professional. Your hair doesn't have to be slicked down or straightened to be professional. That's the difference. A combed afro works well. The people saying her hair is dirty have no way of knowing that so that just stems from texturism which I don't agree with, but yes, I still believe black women should not be exempt from styling their hair appropriately for work.

People are so linear with what is acceptable. Like some people like diffrent styling and just cause it's something you've never seen before does not make it ugly. If the girls with straight hair can go to a fancy event with a "messy bun" I say, do whatever you want. Black haircare is an expensive and laborous part time job that I personally hate doing. Some straight and curly girls can just wake up, fluff, and go. Some can't and would rather spend their time on more important things than beauty. @@Nopington idk.. I do a braid out ( my pfp) that takes about an hour and it last for days so I can wake up and go. Another go to was the puff. Hair is done in less than 10 minutes. You have to find what works for you.. this right here just wasn’t it.

I think we also think that textured hair being messy to the same extent that straight hair is often equalss more discrimination because we are always expected to have edges laid or our hair covered or pulled back.
I agree with most of this video, but I am conflicted when it comes to big afros in the workplace. At the end of the day, a big afro is just long natural hair that was left down. If it was generally expected for long hair to be pulled back or styled that's one thing, but that isn't the case. It can come off as a more casual look, depending on the rest of the outfit, styling, and accessories, but if people of other races are not expected to pull back their long locks, we should also be exempt from that same expectation. Long hair in general is very eye catching regardless of race but that's because most people find or assume long hair to be hard to manage. I personally think everyone should be able to wear their hair however they want for any job that isn't in front of a camera, upper-level leadership, or requiring rigorous movement, maybe front desk as well. I personally would love to see some of the less formal styles shown in this video to be worn in office settings. For me, how you choose to style and accessorize the rest of your look matters more than the hairstyle. Also, the amount of yt people who definitely looked like they rolled out of bed at my last corporate job, from entry level to upper management, was appalling in comparison to any person of color in the same or similar position. That never sat right with me. Yt people, especially women, do have standards for work appearance, but I find they are rarely held to it as harshly once they actually get the job. They only have to play that role long enough to be accepted, while women of color are not allowed to stop the performance of it all. All that being said I did assume that reporter was having a bad hair day but over time I have trained myself to care more about people's words and actions than their appearance both in and outside of work. I can acknowledge that most people don't do that, and it is something to keep in mind, at least for work appearances. That's another reason why I'm looking for a wfh job, so I can dress exactly as I want to most days without worrying about any of that superficial stuff.

Most little girls learn grooming and self care from their mom. I used to watch my mom dressing up and doing her makeup in front of the vanity mirror and I'd practice doing the same after she was done with imaginary makeup. 😅You have to set the example if you don't already. Dress up and take care with your appearance how you'd want her to do if you don't already and she would follow suit if it's something she wants. But her a perfume, deodorant and lip gloss for starters. Most mothers are responsible for inspiring the feminine energy in their daughters. So if she watches you basking in and enjoying being groomed, she will want that too.

I agree and to take it a step further, black women should stop giving mixed women our identity. We need to have a stricter standard on what blackness is or is not. We are helping society replace us with mixed people by calling mixed people black. No other countries or group of people classify mixed people as their race. Other people put mixed people in their own category because they are mixed and to keep mixed people in their country from replacing them.

SMH our ancestors didn’t fight for our freedom just for us to turn around and have terrible hygiene and bed-head. And I will absolutely criticize a black woman with unkempt hair just like people of other races do to their community. It is not normal to just get up out of bed and go straight to work without any effort on your appearance. Why should black women be the only ones exempt from criticism, correction & order? What about HER staying on code and making sure she is representing black women in the best light possible, to show that while our hair may be curly/coily, we can achieve many different FLATTERING aesthetics. I could look at her hair and tell she did nothing. Because guarantee when you wet that hair and let it dry it won’t come out like that. She slept on her hair and then woke up and didn’t touch it.

I agree. I think natural hair is acceptable is all it's forms. Her hair is clearly styled. I shared other styles in this video including with straight hair that isn't exactly ideal for workplace. I don't think exempting type 4 hair from this is the way to go. I get that it's the most discriminated against hair type but accepting one's self doesn't mean there's no room for improvement!

I have a couple of texturist acquaintances. One randomly said oh your daughters hair looks like locs! This woman never wears her natural hair in its curly state. Someone mentioned how white women still need to wash and comb their hair took presentable so there’s no excuse for this woman to look like this. This woman most likely had to wash her hair to twist it out like this and some of you are still in the comments saying it looks dirty…you need to sit with why you consider kinky hair dirty when it’s not done to fit the European standard if beauty or professionalism.
The challenge with the take about white women still needing to do xyz to look presentable is that we are STILL using them as the standard AND the process of washing and combing takes them a fraction of the time it takes us. And having done these two easy steps makes them quickly seen as “professional”. A Black woman with kinky hair has to take more time to MANIPULATE our hair to achieve the same acknowledgment of “professionalism” they do in just those two easy steps. Their hair is already the standard so the effort to manipulate it to be “professional” is very minimal. The kinkiest of us find it takes hours to achieve what they do in minutes. THAT is the problem. Our hair must be manipulated with excessive products and styling to be seen as kept. Let’s not fool ourselves about what effort looks like on both sides and how our hair perceived as professional or beautiful if not styled to the high heavens.
Every time you put a comb in your hair, you 'manipulate' it. You can choose to leave it unmanipulated outside of work, but at work it's not too much to ask that you show up with your hair looking professional. Your hair doesn't have to be slicked down or straightened to be professional. That's the difference. A combed afro works well. The people saying her hair is dirty have no way of knowing that so that just stems from texturism which I don't agree with, but yes, I still believe black women should not be exempt from styling their hair appropriately for work.

People are so linear with what is acceptable. Like some people like diffrent styling and just cause it's something you've never seen before does not make it ugly. My fresh twist out would be looking just like that after 5 minutes in the Houston humidity. I don't have her confidence, but she has a job and seems to be thriving so people just need to get over it.

Some straight and curly girls can just wake up, fluff, and go. Some can't and would rather spend their time on more important things than beauty. @@Nopington idk.. I do a braid out ( my pfp) that takes about an hour and it last for days so I can wake up and go. Another go to was the puff. Hair is done in less than 10 minutes. You have to find what works for you.. this right here just wasn’t it.

I agree with most of this video, but I am conflicted when it comes to big afros in the workplace. At the end of the day, a big afro is just long natural hair that was left down. If it was generally expected for long hair to be pulled back or styled that's one thing, but that isn't the case. It can come off as a more casual look, depending on the rest of the outfit, styling, and accessories, but if people of other races are not expected to pull back their long locks, we should also be exempt from that same expectation.
Long hair in general is very eye catching regardless of race but that's because most people find or assume long hair to be hard to manage. I personally think everyone should be able to wear their hair however they want for any job that isn't in front of a camera, upper-level leadership, or requiring rigorous movement, maybe front desk as well. I personally would love to see some of the less formal styles shown in this video to be worn in office settings. For me, how you choose to style and accessorize the rest of your look matters more than the hairstyle. Also, the amount of yt people who definitely looked like they rolled out of bed at my last corporate job, from entry level to upper management, was appalling in comparison to any person of color in the same or similar position. That never sat right with me. Yt people, especially women, do have standards for work appearance, but I find they are rarely held to it as harshly once they actually get the job. They only have to play that role long enough to be accepted, while women of color are not allowed to stop the performance of it all.
All that being said I did assume that reporter was having a bad hair day but over time I have trained myself to care more about people's words and actions than their appearance both in and outside of work. I can acknowledge that most people don't do that, and it is something to keep in mind, at least for work appearances. That's another reason why I'm looking for a wfh job, so I can dress exactly as I want to most days without worrying about any of that superficial stuff.

Most little girls learn grooming and self care from their mom. I used to watch my mom dressing up and doing her makeup in front of the vanity mirror and I'd practice doing the same after she was done with imaginary makeup. 😅You have to set the example if you don't already. Dress up and take care with your appearance how you'd want her to do if you don't already and she would follow suit if it's something she wants. But her a perfume, deodorant and lip gloss for starters. Most mothers are responsible for inspiring the feminine energy in their daughters. So if she watches you basking in and enjoying being groomed, she will want that too.

I agree and to take it a step further, black women should stop giving mixed women our identity. We need to have a stricter standard on what blackness is or is not. We are helping society replace us with mixed people by calling mixed people black. No other countries or group of people classify mixed people as their race.
