I used to spend so much time playing DVD games as a kid. My favorites were the Barbie Rapunzel dress up game and art history lesson game, Lilo and Stitch's alien creation game, and the Disney Sing Along Songs games. There was some special feeling to seeing the clips from the movie as cutscenes as well.
I remember watching commercials for the Shrek 2 DVD SPECIFICALLY advertising the Far Far Away Idol segment as a feature and wanting to see it so bad. Time passed and I got the Shrek 2 DVD for my birthday later that year. I remember being so excited to watch this extra feature and see who was the winner, and being absolutely LIVID that each ending resulted in Simon being declared the winner no matter who you chose. I felt so betrayed lol
Regardless of the weird concept of these DVD interactive games, I still have very fond memories of Timon & Pumba's Virtual Safari on the Lion King DVDs.
I actually remember that exist 2 dvds of Lion King. The orange one was the movie and the blue one was the extras, including that Timon and Pumba Safari. I remember having a lot of fun when i was a kid!
This was so interesting and fun to watch!! It doesn't feel at all like a flat delivery of chronological facts with nothing extra, it's put together with so much personal touch and humor and your videos tell a story very very well :D Awesome video!!! 🦐 👍
Excellent video and great editing! I seem to remember the bonus features and games on the Harry Potter DVD sets were quite good at the time! Might be looking back through rose tinted nostalgia glasses!

As soon as I encountered this video, I had to quickly click in and let the nostalgia roll in. I remember the days when my mom would buy me a dvd from any movie that has been released after the movie premiere or "early access" from cheap DVD vendors. Now this would be a 75/25 for me because most of the DVDs are literally the films but they were illegaly recorded from a video camera inside a theater and they literally have Foreign Titles or Subtitles, while some DVDs are the real deal that carry the Main-Menu + Special Features. @@realtechblitzf I can make a recommendation, A Blue Snowball iCE runs about $50~$100, but is HELLA worth it as a starter mic. Looks like the AUS adaptation of the Deal or No Deal DVD game was basically the same as the US's, except that Howie Mandel was replaced with their host.
We called them set-top games back in the day, because they were being played in the dvd player itself, which most people kept on top of their tv set. Two of the best that I remember (and keep in mind they're about as functional as cd-rom point and click adventures) were on the Who Framed Roger Rabbit disc, which had a ful tour of the movie world hosted with new narration by Benny the Cab, and a game consisting of a few different minigames somewhat replicating the movie plot. The other was a well made Superman vs Doomsday game on the disc for the animated film Superman: Doomsday, a rough first attempt at adapting Death of Superman in the Timmverse days, before the properly titled two part films Death and Reign. That was a fighting game composed of clips from the movie's fight scenes, attacks and responses played after clicks based on timing and reflexes, and it was the closest I ever saw a dvd set top game get to what feels like a real video game. They're as much a novelty as VHS board games now, but could stand some more attention. Too bad they realized that all that extra work made a better product, but didn't really help sales much.
Hey, great video! I was astounded to finish the whole thing and see both a low subscriber count and a low view count. It's an excellent video, and subtitles were included as well. I found this through the 'recommendations' tab, so I really hope that your video continues hitting there; it's a really high quality watch and again, I was shocked to see you're not hitting 6 digit numbers of engagement. You've earned a sub, a comment and a thumbs up! Looking forward to the next video.
You have to play the tale of Despereaux bonus feature where you make the chef food! It was hilarious, and me and my sister used to play it so much as a kid
Randomly found this in my recommendations, clicked it, and was surprised to find that it was produced by a channel with even less subs than myself. But anyways, this was very well written and edited, and I hope you'll consider making more videos like this! DVD games are nostalgic to me (and a lot of other people, I'm sure), and deep-dives like this are surprisingly scarce for the niche, at least from what I've seen. I subscribed and am looking forward to whatever you make next. Best of luck with the channel!
7:43 this is part of why those dvd games made me fell uneasy back then. like i remember being freaked out over some rocket ship dvd game from despicable me which i swear that in my memory, it made it sound like vector was gonna kill me
this was a very good video. Straight and to the point, brought up a lot of info I had no idea about. Good pacing and goofs. I'm excited to see what other videos you put out!
I remember when I was a kid, my dad got me and my sibling a Bratz dvd that we assumed was a movie - turns out it was an interactive game like this where you got to set up a birthday party for the Bratz and even though I was disappointed about it not being a movie, I actually ended up playing it a LOT lol. I played the Shrek 2 Far Far Away Idol a lot too, sometimes I'd put the dvd in just to play it instead of watching the movie.
That last part about you playing the Shrek 2 game instead of watching the movie reminds me of how I owned (still do) the Disney Sing-A-Long Songs DVDs and for the "I'm on My Way" edition, I would watch it not to sing along, but to watch the scenes from the movies without having to watch the entire films.
Now that I think about it, You Don't Know Jack would have been the perfect thing to adapt into a DVD game. Think about it. A small selection of episodes on a disc, complete with Cookie's usual witty commentary. It most likely wouldn't be able to keep track of your score, due to limitations of DVD coding, but I could imagine that it would give you a time/score conversion chart to help you keep track yourself.
I remember really enjoying the extras on the Ducktales Movie dvd back in the day. Looking back at it it wasn't anything too special, it was like a point and click treasure hunt, yet as a kid it felt really cool to explore McDuck Manor like that. Another one I remember really enjoying was "It's your birthday party with Winnie the Pooh". Now this dvd was heavily focused on the interactive part, it was like the main feature of the dvd, it had like 8 different games to play. The one I remember most fondly was the personality quiz. Another interesting thing that came out on dvd were some of the Humongous Entertainment games. Which was very interesting, an entire game basically on your dvd. The ones for Coraline and ice age made me get into sculpting and animation. Thank god laika put theirs up on UA-cam. I wish bluesky did because they were the ones that got me into it of all things. This video was amazing, I really miss the DVD formats presentation. This video also brought back a memory of a DVD game that scared me. I remember being horrified by an Over the Hedge DVD Game where you played as the Squirrel trying to stealth through lasers or something? It was pretty typical for DVD games but the game over screen scared me. It was a scene from the movie of him in a cage, but where normally there was another character to hold his hand he was just alone. It disturbed the hell out of me cause he still looked down where the skunk girl was normally. I may be misremembering it though.

I loved the dvd games as a kid. It used to be the deciding factor of whether or not we'd buy the disc. Surprisingly Disney's Dinosaur had a pretty cool game. I remember I sucked at it for awhile, and it absolutely terrified me, but I got out a notepad and wrote down every wrong descision so I wouldn't make the same mistake again. It was better than the movie
DVD games! Now that's a throwback! My favourite ones were probably: That Timon & Pumbaa one from Lion King where you drive a boat or jeep off a cliff & die like an idiot Aladdin, where you explore the inside of Genie's Lantern, and some maze with traps & stuff Sinbad, where you fight Cetus the Sea Monster (and I think there was another one, but I cant remember) And Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, where you mix random substances and feed it to an Oompa-Loompa to see what bizarre effect it makes.
Fun Fact: As a child. I absolutely loved the extras on Shrek 2 and Madagascar but i actually developed a fear that when i woke up in the middle of the night, the eerie silence along with a character or someone in the menus staring into my soul would absolutely scare the shit outta me. After that, i couldn't be in a room by myself when these menus would play. I would either hit the eject dvd button out of unbearable fear or i would try to start the movie as quick as possible. Its just something about the looping silence or something like a character starring directly at me. Now that im 23, i thought about it for sometime and realized that i had severe anxiety when it came to being in a room completely silent by myself. I had nobody to reassure me that i was safe so it developed into anxiety.
The lion king has a interactive choice game. It’s like a ride that you go on. And you choose which path to take. It’s a behind the scenes ride. Pretty sure Raven simone was in it.
As a kid, I couldn't play video games on school days, so while watching the movies, this was the best I could do to pass a grey line 😂

Actually in Matilda, the character you kept referring to as the teacher was their principal.
DVD games! Now that's a throwback!
My favourite ones were probably:
That Timon & Pumbaa one from Lion King where you drive a boat or jeep off a cliff & die like an idiot
Aladdin, where you explore the inside of Genie's Lantern, and some maze with traps & stuff
Sinbad, where you fight Cetus the Sea Monster (and I think there was another one, but I cant remember)
And Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, where you mix random substances and feed it to an Oompa-Loompa to see what bizarre effect it makes.
Can’t wait for more content, subbed for this video alone.
Simon being the winner almost everytime, was my villian origin story
Underrated comment
Loved this. Subscribed for more fun like this.
Great first video- subbed and notifications
My favorite dvd game was some sort of game on a winnie the pooh movie. It had a map or something, a lot of fun in my childhood

Awesome video! It opened up my memories of playing the game on the Over The Hedge DVD
Elf had my favorite features for dvd extras! I remember loving the snowball fight as a child.
I know its only been 5 days but this video is criminally underrated
The lion king has a interactive choice game. It’s like a ride that you go on. And you choose which path to take. It’s a behind the scenes ride. Pretty sure Raven simone was in it.
This was such a fun watch and brought back my childhood
Wait… I have heard this intro music before in german television. This is the old Das Erste/ARD music from the 90s. Great choice, great video
I need the rest of this series rn
Dude, this high quality as hell!!
As a kid I had a Disney dvd with a little interactive game where you run away from the headless horseman.
Really gotta find it again
