  • Space Mountain is one of the world's most famous coasters. This review specifically talks about the version at the Disneyland Resort. This version has a dark layout filled with tight turns, but it was plussed over the past 2 decades with an incredible soundtrack and a nearly full track replacement.

    This is also my favorite coaster at the Disneyland Resort, I love the soundtrack, theming, and that one sharp drop

    The speed ramp entrance was so iconic and I used to love using it as a kid on my many trips to Disneyland each year. Sadly, like most good things, it came to an end, now you have to walk the miracle mile to actually reach the entrance, as it takes forever. I also loved Starcade back then as well, as I would often see new games there back in the early to mid 80's.

      @@CanobieCoaster Yeah, I'm hoping after they redo the ride, they keep something similar in regards to the ramp, as it is way cool(and still seems futuristic to me. Plus I'll probably make it there before I ever get back to Disneyland, as I see much more value visiting Tokyo than California.

    The first time I rode space Mountain as a kid I thought it felt very robotic and formulaic due to the neverending straight track/right turns. After not visiting the park in many years, I thought maybe I was misremembering but when I rode it again it was just like I remembered 😂. However I think I grew to enjoy it more because I appreciate the soundtrack a lot and the overall atmosphere of the ride is fantastic, plus the one drop that it does have and the speed that builds up as you go farther into the layout.

    I didn't know that my Hyperspace Mountain overlay in October 2019 was a temporary thing, nor did I know what was different. My friend & I walked onto Matterhorn at general opening, then went straight here, and it was still a walk-on. While exiting, I saw the single rider line, so we took that and literally walked onto the empty back row together. I loved that first ride, and knew I wanted to go again. That was smart, since the line quickly then grew to over an hour the rest of the day. My friend needed a break after that, since he doesn't do thrill rides, so we went to the submarine.

    I've had the opportunity to ride every version of Space Mountain and this is my ranking:
    1. Magic Kingdom (best thrills)
    2. Disneyland California (best theming and soundtrack)
    3, Disneyland Paris
    4. Hong Kong Disneyland
    5. Tokyo Disneyland (as you said, the missing effects really impacts the experience - which is why I understand why they are going to rebuild it)
    Hong Kong's version is more similar to California's version but the "hyperspace tunnel" is rectangular and the ride duration is shorter. HK and Tokyo's Space Mountains have extremely small loading bays and queue space (30 -40 mins queues usually start from outside the entrance based on what I recall) which is a problem with these Space Mountains. I also do love to marathon Space Mountain before park closing!!
    As for Hyperspace Mountain overlays:
    1. Disneyland California
    2. HK Disneyland
    3. Disneyland Paris (the overlay just did not make sense and does not fit well at all!)

    space mountain in hong Kong was a great ride, but here's some references from other space mountains
    1. The ride itself is the same as California's version, and the soundtrack is still the same except it uses the soundtrack version without the countdown
    2. The ride is also a reference to space mountain mission 2, like when you get power transferred instead of flashing blue lights, it was electro de velocitor from Paris, and when you get to the third lift hill there's a supernova explosion just like mission 2
    3. the queue line is different because of difficult terrain, and when you're about to board the rocket shuttle, the queue line shows all of the planets hanging above you

    Great review and video. One correction though. The current ride entry area was not for the Magic Eye Theater (just off to the right @7:36) but originally for the "Space Place" eatery which was at the end of the up sloped walkway.

    My biggest issue with the Single Rider at this attraction is the inconsistency with when its open - CMs will often randonly close it with no warning or reason throughout the day. That's really my only main con with what's otherwise a near perfect attraction!! Great review Canobie 👏

    I’ve been on three Space Mountains, for me I much prefer the DL version. I seem to be the only one who puts it this highly, but it’s in my top 10 - I really like the layout and how the ride has two distinct halves, and builds so you hit the max speed right before the brakes. Before the 2003 renovation, it also went through a trench right before the brakes, and the wheels made a ton of noise that built the ending up even more.
    I liked the Tokyo version a lot, but wish it had the soundtrack, and the trains didn’t seem to accommodate tall people as well so it was less comfortable. The station was cool.
    I think the Space in Florida is only OK and usually skip it, it’s a little too janky and bottoming out in the drops has given me a little whiplash or something in my neck a couple times (can never remember which drop does it, which is part of the problem).
    Really interested to see what happens with the new Tokyo version, whether it’s a clone of the DL version or not. My understanding is the HKDL version and 2003 DL refurb are the same Dynamic Attractions design (which themselves use a near identical track layout to the original), but sounds like they had financial issues and were sold. Not sure who owns those designs and who would manufacture it, or if they’d use the same track/structure design.

      The rumor I've heard with Tokyo's new Space Mountain is that it will use the Guardians ride system.

    • @donkeyentertain
      @donkeyentertain 4 місяці тому

      @@CanobieCoaster That's what I've heard too, but the latest construction pics/videos look like the circular part of the building may be similar to DL or DLP, and the footer pattern looks like it could be for the DL layout. Not sure what drives the large Guardians building size though, whether it's the roomy trains and beefy track, or the screens. It would be fantastic if they use that ride system though, Guardians is great.

    • @donkeyentertain
      @donkeyentertain 4 місяці тому

      Actually it looks like the primary dome of the front has around a 200ft diameter, but there is a secondary dome on the front facade that adds width, and it extends back pretty far. So the overall footprint Iooks to be about 250ft wide x 300ft deep, pretty much on par with the main Guardians show building (roughly 310 x 225ft). Still need queue/maintenance/loading, but you're right it's probably not the DL layout. Will be interesting to see how it turns out!

    The Disneyland version is MUCH better than the Disney World version. While the airtime on the OG is really good, the roughness is hard to overlook for me. Because of the new track, the Disneyland version is smooth and has good forces.
