You could've turned that one corner on the upper face together with one on the lower, then you flip the upper face and turn corners again to put them back. You were on the right track. :)

Was actually wondering was there ever a revisit to this one? Was it ever solved? I think I see the problem with it, and might have an idea of how to solve it
and i have an idea that could have helped: solve it "light-blind". pretend all opposite faces are the same color, so you solve a "three colored" cube. then from there you would try to flip all the individual pieces (there's actually a flat egyptian puzzle whee the goal is to do just that, so in 3d it probably wouldn't be that bad either)
It is physically and logically impossible for a puzzle to be impossible to solve when no illegal moves were done to scramble it. If it can legally be scrambled to a certain state, then it can legally be solved from that state.

Maybe it is because you have a yellow edge in the second layer that you have that situation.
