  • It works great, that's how it works! Depending on how you hold it, you can get a very wide variety of line widths. Granted, I don't expect I'll be using this particular fountain pen regularly just because it's so big and gaudy, but it has piqued my interest in this type of fude bent nib.

    Fun fact; in the midevil era, red glass was still very rare because royal families would have a glass blower with a secret recipe for making red glass, it was so secretive that they would actually write the formula down in code making it almost impossible to re create that specific red glass.

    • @andrecarpy6890
      @andrecarpy6890 4 роки тому +37

      Jude Fenwick I think it’s about them wanting to be unique and above everyone else, which is why they used intriguing yet expensive/rare textiles or in this case red glass. For example, only the wealthiest countries had a purple flag since hundreds or thousands (can’t remember) of rare snails had to be killed to be used to make purple dye. The point of it? To be special and unique and be noticed. Take this w/ a grain of salt since I can’t remember the exact details or reasons.

      Hi! Medieval historian PhD here. I absolutely love these sorts of interesting tidbits about medieval crafts, especially when we can detect their legacies in modern objects. Just a little clarification: the relative rarity of red glass is mostly due to the extra effort required to make it. The metal oxides that turn glass red were well known but are too opaque for the glass to still be translucent, so the craftsman has to either carefully swirl only a little bit of red into the clear glass (this is called streaky red) or layer a super thin sheet of red over a thicker sheet of clear glass so that it still has structure. Lots of extra effort! (and therefore expense). In churches, where most of the money was, red and blue were far and away the most popular colors for stained glass. But red was almost never used for anything more practical, like drinking vessels. That said, it was common, especially after it became harder to get garnets after c1050, to make little red glass beads for the decoration of books, clothes, and jewelry. It was the famous glass blowers in Murano (near Venice) who started jealously guarding their recipes around the end of the Middle Ages. To this day it’s a pretty magical place that still trains world class glass artisans and if they were ever commissioned to design fountains pens I bet they’d use a secret mixture of red glass too!

    don't worry, you're saying fude right, and if you were wondering, it's japanese for writing brush or brush pen, like they use for traditional calligraphy in china and japan, because the shape of the nib allows you to mimic the way you write that style of calligraphy with a brush.
    and that little bit on top of the nib helps it hold even more ink at the ready, which probably helps with those wide sideways strokes with the bent nib. that's also what the three-part nib is for.

    Yay! You finally got a fude nib! I knew you would like it - keep playing around with how you hold it to get an amazing variety of line widths. It was designed to act like a Chinese calligraphy brush; if you've ever seen a video of one of the masters making calligraphy art, how they bend and twist their wrists as they guide the brush across the paper, that's kind of the idea. I would love to see more with this nib! I have the Duke Bamboo Confucious fude pen, and it's a lot of fun to play with.

    Peter, just as an FYI, and I don’t know how accurate this is but I read in the past that the spring in the converter is in there to keep the ink from freezing. Your analogy sounds more plausible to me but I thought I’d throw that out there for your consideration.

    My thought about discussing art-in-process is that translating a nonverbal message into words dilutes the energy one might otherwise put into visual imagery. I’ve been there, and school emphasizes words so awfully much. Enjoying the video 🤩

    i think you shouldut have to explain your art people should take what they want from your art but also i don recommend bottling up all your emotions its not healthy and it could cause major problems down the road

      @@peter_draws yes using art as your only coping mechanism is a bit funky at times i recommend finding 2 at least healthy coping mechanisms personally i have two currently lots of nature walks and art specificly my watercolour art

    From what I understand, it's like you're enjoying the challenge of deadlines and such that are out of your control. Kind of like a thrill, but it's also creative and enjoyable. If I'm right, then that makes complete sense. If I"m wrong then that makes complete sense also.

    All I can say is wow its a good job that Peters sleeve was colossal enough to capture all of the flying droplets from that mighty sneeze, the world needs those sleeves to contain and thus stops spreading the "virus".
