I was a WW2 child and grew up on bubble and squeak I still love it. That was always Monday dinner with cold meat and left over vegetables from the Sunday roast. Back in the day Monday was washing day for every housewife it went on practically all day no washing machines then women didn't have the time to spend preparing a dinner so bubble and squeak with cold meat and pickle was quick and easy. I will cook veg now just to make bubble and squeak and I like it with a poached egg on top or with ham or cold chicken and still with pickle.
I love these stories❤
Yes I remember washing days at my grandmothers…they were a farming family and my Gran had her washer ( twin tub ) and her mangle ( to those in US it pressed all the water out of clothes) ..in the barn next to the house it was an ALL DAY affair but I loved pulling the sheets through the mangle all flat and pristine…and leftovers, bubble and Squeak and / or Rissoles made from the joint ….wish I had asked her for the recipe for the rissoles. ( I’m 55 )
If you are in Louisiana, south. louisiana you would do red beans and rice on Monday!
I'm also looking forward to Hex and Hexability. I LOVE the first two I the series and am honestly feeling a little,e impatient for the next!!
Bubble and squeak,,,Yummy,,,
Thanks for book chats,,,,
Elaine 🏘🏡🎄
Oh my goodness that dickens manuscript book is stunning!! Thank you for showing this ♡
Thank you for the recipé link for Toad in the Hole. We had it for dinner tonight, and my husband loved it
What a lovely video again... Loved the book round up. Read legends and latte on your recommendation and also half way through Daisy and the 6 and loving it. Have a beautiful day ❤❤❤
The book, Before the Coffee gets Cold is part of a 4 book series. I read them on Libby and think I need to buy them all, they really make you think about life.
I have the A Christmas Carol graphic novel edition. 🙂 I dnf'ed Bookshops and bonedust.
Do love skirlie, yummy. Mum taught me how to do it and we would have it with Mince & Tatties or Roast Chicken. Bubble & Squeak is also yummy. Your tree is so lovley Ali, love the shape of it and it fits the space perfectly x
I’ve just finished reading The Maid. I took a little while to get into it but ended up really enjoying it & it left me thinking about the characters afterwards 👍🏻
Hello! Wanted to say I really enjoy watching your vlogs and preparations for the seasons. Watching reminds me it all doesn't need to be done at once.
Two UA-camrs also doing vlogmas are Stitches and Slapdashery and Wolhobby. The first you mentioned in vlogtober, and she credits you with inspiting her to start her channel this year. The second is from the Netherlands and vlogs in both Dutch and English.
I've been wondering what happened to pink bunny. Did he find his home? Also, did you check out the lobster nativity? It is a very unique nativity set with lobsters playing all the parts.🦞
Cheesy Christmas book on audible (included in the membership) Christmas Star by Kate Forrester. About an hour in and enjoying- narrator is very English (you’ll understand when you listen) but once you adjust it’s quite good 😂
I loved the foggy(?) scene at the beginning of the video. Really takes me back to my days in England.
I was watching this episode with Rakki, our 3 month old kitty and he loved the cooking part. He watched it intently, got attracted by the sizzling noise, and touched the screen when you moved the spatula stirring..😊.
Thank you for another entertaining post. See you tomorrow. ❤
Bubble and squeak as a child was on a Monday for me with leftover meat from the Sunday roast. I like the look of your oatmeal dish and your tree looks perfect. Going to watch your podcast later 😊
Ah Penny it won’t be up until Sunday! But lots of lovely vlogmasses to keep you entertained 🙃
Thank you for the heads-up about the Original Manuscript Edition of The Christmas Carol. My husband is also one who watches all versions as we approach Christmas. Your description inspired me to look it up and order it. It will arrive on Thursday, just in time to enjoy reading a bit of it before the holidays. I am certain that he will love it❤
❤️ 🎄
I bought some oatbran to make porridge on the recommendation of a friend. They are supposed to help with cholesterol. It is fine milled small niblet bits. I bought them in Sainsbury's it's called Morningflake Mighty Oats. I'm not sure if it is too fine for your Skirlie.
I always look forward to you vlogs. Today is extra special because of the book reviews. I am with you-never know what I want to read or listen to. Just because I have rejected a book at one time, doesn't mean I won't enjoy it later. I, based on Becky's, Sarah's and your recommendations, am now listening to 'Murder on the Christmas Express.'.
Aw Ali, you seem to do so much more than i do. I just sit and knit. Well, i work too. Loving your tree decorations. You made a good job of them xxx
Oh yum, Bubble & Squeak, I love it, so tasty, growing up always had it on a Monday, we had it with fried eggs ! Strange combination but so good 😄 tree is looking lovely, not sure I’ve heard of Scurly ? Is that how you spell it ? 😅 Hugs, Suze. 🎄🐈🥰🤗 xxx
Have you read The Midnight Library. I listened to the audio book version read by Carey Mulligan and it was the best book of the year for me. ❤
OMG! Love the crochet lama on your tree 🙂. Nice tree, by the way. We have a natural tree, which we decorate on December 23. We take it down again between Christmas and New Year, but sometimes I miss a tree standing all December. But I don't know if I can live with a plastic tree..... It's of course more sustainable, but plastic..... We're considering 🙂. What do you all think? Is plastic ok to look at? Maybe it's just another tradition here in Denmark.
Quite awhile ago, Dan recommended the Broken Earth trilogy by NK Jemison. I took up the recommendation and it has become one of my favorite reads! I think Dan should check out the synopsis for Senlin Ascends by Josiah Bancroft, which is the first of a four book fantasy series. It’s wonderfully written, a great mix of humor and action, and the character development is so good! I have trouble deciding which book in the series is my favorite.
Love all the books you mentioned. Just finishing up Murder on The Christmas Express" and thoroughly enjoyed it , but want to give you a heads up , its a little dark
I love the Christmas carol too. Heard from a version illustrated by Lisa Aisato. It looks stunning and I think I need this .
Ah skirlie - yum. I have to fry the onions in just oil, as I have a lactose intolerance, but otherwise that's exactly how I do it - in fact, I was thinking it needed to be a bit wetter just as you said it and added more oil. Food of the gods!
We are having bubble and squeak on Boxing Day and all looking forward to it 🎄🎄
Wow. Never heard of skirle or bubbles and squeak. Had to look it up.
I'm just finishing Hex and the City and I have loved both books ❤
What is Murder on the Christmas express like I was going to get it ? Maybe you could tell me if it’s good ? 🎄📚🎄
Hi! Tree looks great! Do you do the monthly Agatha Christie read along? I started A Christmas Carol but I haven’t finished it yet. Daisy Jones was such a good book.
I always wondered is the fireplace in your bedroom a working one and do you use it? It’s such a beauty! Ohh and I wanted to tell you look up the podcast merry beggars they are doing the Christmas carol in episodes everyday, its a great listen
We didn’t get to see The girls advent calendar gift for today.
Ali thank you I love the book reviews I have audible many of your recommendations since lock down memorable Raynor Wynn salt path trilogy & The light I cannot see backed up your holiday vlogs 👍
Recently “ The seven sisters Lucinda Reily “ now on 7th Missing Sister & then final “Pa Salt “ wrapping them all together Fantastic books highly recommend they are two stories in one past & present 👏🏻
The tree looks pretty 🎄& Skirlie ( not heard of it ) delicious 💕
Why are some Murder on the Christmas Express books green and some white?
I think the hard cover is green and the paperback is white 😃
The tree looks wonderful! Also, love the cardigan you were wearing when you recorded your podcast, looking forward to watching and finding out what pattern it is!
Love bubble and squeak! We had it every Monday when I was a child! X
Would the oats be what we call steel cut in the US?
Love your end of the year tag. Really lovely vlog x
Why not put it on the other side of the chair by the bookcase so the door doesn’t hit it?
Because if we move the little sofa over far enough to do so we can’t squeeze into the living room between the two sofas 😅 But this new one solves the issue so hurrah! 😃🎄
Awwww ... It's a beautiful tree! ❤️🎄😍
This was so good. I loved your book tag. I will film one later in the month and let you know. I’ve upped my reading a lot this year so I think that could be fun. ❤
Your tree looks lovely, Ali. Also your dinner. x
loved hearing about your the books you read and loved this year : )
Another gorgeous vlog and you did so well with the tag - we’ll make a Booktuber out of you yet! ☺️💛
