This has made me super excited to get stuck into some Austen once again. Like you, I found that Sense and Sensibility improves with every reread. Looking forward to reading it once again and discovering more details in the story. The Paula Byrne book sounds interesting, I enjoyed the Mullan, and I'm definitely more into books about Austen's writing than biographies of her, so that sounds right up my street. SO MANY RETELLINGS and they all sound amazing. Also The Murder of Mr Wickham is a recommendation from both you and Marissa so I might have to get that. Also taking note of those Lex Croucher books, they sound super fun. The Lister diaries are already at the top of my TBR shortlist. I'm never going to read all of these 😭 But I'll have a lot of fun trying.
I forgot about Jane Austen July and filmed my TBR!! I am so participating!! I will film another video with my updated TBR along with it! I cannot believe I forgot this!
This is my first Jane Austen July and I’m reading all of her novels for the first time this year (minus Pride and Prejudice). All of your recommendations sound so great and I know I’ll be reading them beyond the month. 😄
Happy anticipation! Will definitely take part in the read-alongs and take up as many of the challenges as I am able. I kept a list from last time of possibilities for this time. I love Sense and Sensibility and am looking forward to the re-read. My third favorite Austen (after Pride and Prejudice and Emma). Definitely a sibling story -- I'm not sure I have read a better one.
I had just checked for a JAJ announcement video about 20 minutes before you posted this! As someone who read Sense and Sensibility 40 years ago and didn’t enjoy it as much as Pride and Prejudice, it is definitely time for a re-read.
Just found your channel. I read Mansfield Park this year, Fanny was such a different protagonist, a lot more series and introspective. Binging on your videos now
I'm planning to read Northanger Abbey, but also thinking about reading Lucy Worsley's book Jane Austin At Home. The latter is not on my to read list for this year, but then nor are half the things I've read so far this year. I do already own both though. 😊📚
As for the choice between Heyer or Quinn, I recommend Heyer. She’s one if my favorite authors. For humor, try The Unknown Ajax, The Talisman Ring, or Cotillion.
❤ I got so happy to see the announcement for JAJ pop up on Instagram! July is my birthday month and this has become my favorite way to enjoy it 🎉 congratulations on your 7th year 🍾
I love Jane Austen July! I'll try my best to read as much as i can. I intend on reading the letters, reread Emma (love it), read What matters (at least a little bit) and rewatch Emma (movie) and P&P (bbc), but also watch sth new, maybe Sanditon or the adaption of Lady Susan. Oh, btw, The Murder of Wickham sounds interesting. I'll try thay too.
Yaaaaaaaaay! Not only will I be joining in the readathon (I think this is the 6th year I've joined) but I'll also be going to Bath towards the end of July for a very Jane Austen filled few days to celebrate my birthday.
I am excited to reread Sense abd Sensibility, I read it two years ago and though I loved aspects of it I want to love it more. I am excited to finish the Watsons and read Sandition. So excited to make my list. Jane Austen July is always one of my favourite times of year.
One of the best and most exciting times of the year :) I've reread S&S earlier this year, but I think I might reread it again, this time in the BBC radio full-cast version. I'm hoping to also finally read Eavesdropping on Jane Austen's England which I've had for years. There are so many retellings to choose from!
Just went and bought my first two Jane Austen books from Waterstones. Sense and Sensibility and Northanger Abbey for this! Also as an aside I just finished the proof you sent me and I loved it even more than your last :)
How exciting! This will be my fifth year taking part of JAJ and I've been thinking on my pile of possibilities for a couple of months 🤭. I'll reread Mansfield Park for the first prompt and see how many books I can squeeze for the rest of the month. For my watching challenges, I always enjoy rewatchs of Sense and Sensibility (1995, I'm in that group haha) and of The Jane Austen Book Club. Also, how wonderful to hear your new novel will be out on audiobook too! I listened to The Secrets of Hartwood Hall on audiobook last year and it was marvelous!
I've been trying to read more Jane Austen books, so I'm really excited about participating in JAJ for the first time! Thanks for the video, it's a great guide, and you gave me many many great options. Congrats on your second book! I can't wait to read it.
This sounds great. Thanks for giving us a few weeks' notice. I'll certainly read Sense and Sensibility as I have it on the shelf and have not read it. I look forward to joining in!
Reading Jane Austen at Home & The Other Bennet Sister now! I am enjoying Lucy Worsley's book very much. And The Other Bennet Sister is also good for a retelling.
Looking forward to JJA, but also very excited for your new book release. I’ll be happy with whatever mix of content you release during July. Just reserved a bunch of library books! 😎
I plan on reading Mansfield Park for the first time this Jane Austen July and hopefully a few Austen inspired books. I am also eager to watch Sense and Sensibility. Congrats on your second book publishing soon!
So excited for JAJ! I had already planned to read S&S and Sanditon and The Watsons this time, so I was thrilled that I match up with the official plans. I usually only do one or two of the prompts, but this year I am trying for 4 or 5. Looking forward to your videos.
I just found out that my July is going to be crazy, but I have at least two books that I hope to read in July for this event! So excited for another Jane Austen July! 💛
Yay! 📚 Looking forward to diving into Sense & Sensibility, once again. It's not my favorite, so maybe I'll also have a change of heart. Thank you, Katie!
The number of modern pastiches of her novels are being continually published reveal how many people love her characters. The same thing can be said of Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories.
Oh you will love Georgette Heyer, she is so funny and historically accurate! I'll be definitely re-reading Emma and will try to read What Matters In Jane Austen and some other stuff too.
Looking forward to participating again! I think this will also be a more low key Jane Austen July for me. I love all the video ideas and can't wait for your character deep dives. Time to start looking through my ereader to see what prompts I already have books for.
I loved reading 'Cambrian Pictures' by Ann of Swansea. It's such an interesting alternative view of the era, by the disabled sister of Sarah Siddons. So, more of a working class view of the time. It's a mix of sense and sensibility and she has a real gift for the dramatic (women fighting duels showing the family's stage craft background).
I've read several of those books you mentioned. I just read the Watsons for my Jane Austen Society. We are going to read a non fiction book written by one of our members. I had to order it special. It comes out June 11. Some good adaptations are from Bollywood. There is one based on Sense and Sensibility.Ive been reading the Barsetshire series. I'm almost through Small House. The last book is really long. If I read my book club, I won't get to it for a while.
I bought a copy of Eavesdropping on Jane Austen's England because it had a picture of the gibbeted pirate William Kidd on the cover. It's due for a proper cover-to-cover read. I'll use this July as an opportunity. I love Jane Austen July and all the videos that come out of it. How fun!
I want to recommend it but I am not sure that Darkness at Pemberley by T H White (Sword in the Stone/Once and Future King) counts as a Jane Austen retelling, even if it features Mr Darcy, Pemberley and Elizabeth Darcy I would be interested to see your reaction to the Bridgerton books, if you read them. I was bothered by historical inaccuracies in the early books and spent rather too much time refuting a scene where a couple of characters try to get a warm milky drink.
I had never heard of the T.H. White title and have just ordered a copy, so thank you. The reviews make it fairly clear that the connection with P&P is tenuous to say the least but it will make a nice curiosity for my collection
Definitely read Georgette Heyer over Julia Quinn! If you didn't like the Bridgerton TV series, you definitely will not like the books (as the TV series is better). Georgette Heyer also has a huge catalogue - my favourites are Regency Buck, Bath Tangle, Cousin Kate and The Toll Gate.
Good to know! I'm sort of curious to give a Bridgerton book a try but not really expecting to like them? I definitely need to try some Georgette Heyer.
Did I hear you say that you had never read a Georgette Heyer?!? She has so many amazing books, romances and comedies and histories and mysteries. Some of her historical novels are Georgian and thus would not fit the remit, but many of them are Regency so you have loads to choose from. I would suggest starting with one of the following: The Grand Sophy Venetia Arabella They’re fun and frothy and killingly funny at times. If you wanted a more dramatic novel that’s about domestic arrangements but is not what I would necessarily call a romance so much as a drama, then try A Civil Contract. It’s a fascinating study of a marriage based on financial necessity and comfort, which of course many marriages were, and I love it, although it is not what one usually expects from Heyer. If you decide to stretch it to the Georgian period, my favorite of those are: These Old Shades The Masqueraders If you like her, she’s got literally dozens of novels so you’ll have no lack of places to go from there. 🥰
I got a nice Folio Society edition of Frederica by Heyer that I plan to read in july. I reread Sense and Sensibility last year so I want to reread another book this year, probably Pride and Prejudice. I really want to read Gill Hornby's next novel The Elopement but that won't be published until next year.
I’ve never even heard of the Watson’s so maybe I’ve give that a go. Have you read “Me and Mr Darcy” by Alexandra Potter? It’s a modern retelling but the main character is visiting Jane Austen’s home etc and “meets” the “real” Mr Darcy whenever she’s on her own away from the tour group that she’s with. (Now that I’ve put that in writing I have a strange Dejavu feeling that I probably asked the same question last year haha)
Excited to participate! Do you have any favorite audiobook narrators for any of her novels? I was hoping to read Persuasion and Sense and Sensibility this July :) Thank you!
He has been reading more Jane Austen every year, but we didn't get round to making a video last year. He now only has Sense and Sensibility left, I think!
(Melanie here) What was the name of that comedy play with two gentlemen who invited ladies over with the thought that there would be an older aunt/uncle? present. That fell through so one of them dressed up as the older relative. Than sounded funny. Where would I look for it? Thanks, Katie.
Now you're talking; shame she wasn't as prolific as Dickens. I thought that the TV attempt at Sanditon was an appalling travesty and an absolute hoot: unreservedly recommended.
Maybe it's just me, but I think J.A. is the first real novelist. And all the other real novelists are standing on her shoulders because she got there first !
It always makes me smile to see this announcement pop up in June. Jane Austen July was how Tilly lured me into booktube. Time to start planning.
Haha I love the idea of Tilly luring you to Booktube with the promise of Jane Austen!
I’m so excited about Jane Austen July this year! Yay!
This has made me super excited to get stuck into some Austen once again. Like you, I found that Sense and Sensibility improves with every reread. Looking forward to reading it once again and discovering more details in the story.

I'm never going to read all of these 😭
But I'll have a lot of fun trying.
I have SO MANY RETELLINGS on my TBR already 😅
You are completely right about S&S not being a love story. It is an amazing novel about family.
I forgot about Jane Austen July and filmed my TBR!! I am so participating!! I will film another video with my updated TBR along with it! I cannot believe I forgot this!

Very much looking forward to participating and was going read Sense and a sensibility anyway, so yay!
How happy and excited was I to see videos announcing Jane Austen July!!! I love it and I think it will be my 5th year participating in it.
Such a project!!
I had just checked for a JAJ announcement video about 20 minutes before you posted this! As someone who read Sense and Sensibility 40 years ago and didn’t enjoy it as much as Pride and Prejudice, it is definitely time for a re-read.
So excited! My favorite month of the year!
Also your new novel looks fantastic! I just ordered a copy!
Just found your channel. I read Mansfield Park this year, Fanny was such a different protagonist, a lot more series and introspective. Binging on your videos now

This is perfect 🙌🏽. Sense and Sensibility was what I was already planning to read for Jane Austen July 🫶🏽✨
I am so happy we are reading Sense and Sensibility as I am going to see the play at the Pitlochry Theatre in August.
I am actually going to read Sense and Sensibility after watching the Emma Thompson DVD on a movie channel.
As for the choice between Heyer or Quinn, I recommend Heyer. She’s one if my favorite authors. For humor, try The Unknown Ajax, The Talisman Ring, or Cotillion.
I will try and take part a little this year, looking forward to your book!
Joan Aiken has also written a sequel to Mansfield Park and a completed version of The Watsons.
I’ll be reading Emma which is the last of her books I’ve yet to read.
It is so good! My favourite
I love this video. You are quite amazing.
I would love to discuss the rakes. I have su h strong feelings about Henry Crawford.
❤ I got so happy to see the announcement for JAJ pop up on Instagram! July is my birthday month and this has become my favorite way to enjoy it 🎉 congratulations on your 7th year 🍾

I love Jane Austen July!

I’ve just started reading S&S for the first time, so I’m ahead of the curve for a change!

I'm currently reading Old Friends and New Fancies by Sybil G. Brinton and it's a fun Austen crossover sequel
Super excited about Jane Austen July! ❤️
The number of modern pastiches of her novels are being continually published reveal how many people love her characters. The same thing can be said of Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories.
Just ordered two books for the Readathon Opps and yes I’m also reading a lex croucher. You know I get so excited about the reafat😊🎉🎉
Oh you will love Georgette Heyer, she is so funny and historically accurate! I'll be definitely re-reading Emma and will try to read What Matters In Jane Austen and some other stuff too.
I really do need to give her a try!

Looking forward to participating again! I think this will also be a more low key Jane Austen July for me. I love all the video ideas and can't wait for your character deep dives. Time to start looking through my ereader to see what prompts I already have books for.
Some years ago I read a finished version of Sanditon by jane Austen and Another Lady: enjoyable and the join was pretty smooth!
Ooooh! Happy days! :)
I loved reading 'Cambrian Pictures' by Ann of Swansea. It's such an interesting alternative view of the era, by the disabled sister of Sarah Siddons. So, more of a working class view of the time. Thanks for this, just ordered a copy
@@christinesmith3991 I hope you enjoy it. I definitely enjoyed the women with sense over those exhibiting sensibility, a bit of a romp.
Yes yes a video about rakes! That sounds so much fun 😊

I reread Sense & Sensibility last year so this year it’ll be Pride and Prejudice! Our top 2 are the same yay! I’m so excited for your new book!
Thanks so much :)
I did a partial JAJ last year but I’m going bigger this year! I’m looking forward to reading your new book - I really enjoyed the first one. 👏
Thanks so much :)

Ooo a good video idea - thank you!
Another great video

Maybe it's just me, but I think J.A. is the first real novelist. And all the other real novelists are standing on her shoulders because she got there first !
I definitely think of her as the first novelist to have proper character development. Characters don't seem to grow in novels pre-Austen!
