It would be so interesting to read Lover's Vows and see what all the drama and scandal was about in Mansfield Park! I'm going to be rereading Persuasion.
I’m excited for my first Jane Austen July as a creator. I read all of her books in my 30s but nothing recently.I got interested in Jane Austen because I had read a magazine article about depression and how Jane Austen would relieve it. It worked. I’m not depressed anymore but they are feel good books. Aloha
3:27 - I read Jack & Alice about 4 years ago, and that was my favourite line as well! I scribbled it into my reading journal. Too funny that you also picked just that one out, and the line is also too funny
Those two contemporary books look fascinating! I'll be re reading Mansfield Park and Persuasion and I was thinking on finally read the Paula Byrne book. I bought it many, many years ago and never read it. And for the movies, I'm thinking on Persuasion (1995), Northanger Abbey (2007), Pride and Prejudice (1940) and The Jane Austen Book Club, just because I love it so much.
The Rosamund Pike audiobooks are so good, though I also love the Juliet Stevenson ones. I'm probably going to listen to Stevenson's narration of Persuasion in July. Pride very nearly made it onto my TBR, so I'm curious to see what you make of it.
I love the Juliet Stevenson ones too- but adore Rosamund Pike in every way. Has anyone heard the Prunella scales versions? I love especially hearing her read Emma since of course she had the role of Miss Bates once upon a time and was superb. She is an absolute national treasure.
So excited for this! I've only got one more book to collect from the library and then I'm going to post my tbr on bookstagram! This is my first time taking part in Jane Austen July!
I feel like I should pick up Lovers Vows to go alongside Mansfield Park! Such a great TBR and as always, I’m looking forward to your videos throughout the month!
I listened to The Real Jane Austen: A Life in Small Things last and really enjoyed it! It was a great audiobook and different take on Jane Austen’s life. I have a growing stack of books I want to read so I might just name them all in my TBR video. There are so many choices!
The memoir by her nephew sounds fascinating! I am eager to see what you think of the Paula Byrne. (I’m currently reading her new Barbara Pym biography.)
Just shows what a wealth of Jane Austen-related books we have! I've read Austen-Leigh's memoir and it's good - very Victorian, so even an option for October? So excited!
I am excited for Jane Austen July! All I have tentatively planned so far is one of Sonali Dev's books for the modern retelling. I think I will reread Mansfield Park or Persuasion as well.
You’re reading The Woman of Colour!!!! 🙌 I can’t wait to dive into that one. I noticed Spotify has an audiobook of Persuasion read by Cynthia Eviro so I might squeeze that one in as well. Bring on July! 🎉🎉🎉
Yes, definitely participating! I have Emma, Persuasion and MP left to read and I'm leaning towards Persuasion. Also debating between Charlotte, Mary B or The Other Bennett Sister...so many great choices it's hard to decide haha!
I’m definitely reading Lover’s Vows. I need to see what all the fuss was about in MP! I also have her juvenalia and some of her letters. I’m REALLY looking forward to the letters. It’s been a while since I read Pride and Prejudice or Northanger Abbey, so I may do those. I also bought a tiny biography, and maybe this year I can finally make myself finish Jane Austen at Home.
Thanks for organising this again, Katie! It’s always a highlight of the year. I’m going to reread Mansfield Park. I’m also reading Longbourn and The Jane Austen Society. Hoping to watch several adaptations, especially the Persuasion version with Sally Hawkins before the new version hits the big screen. Have a wonderful reading month! 😊📚
I'm so excited! I'm planning on reading Persuasion and The Watsons. I also really want to try and give Rob Roy a go this year. I'm thinking about watching the 95 Persuasion as well or Sandition finally. Planning on rewatching your modern retellings video as I just don't know which one I feel like yet.
Nice list! I've recently started watching BookTube and trying to join in on some of the readathons. But my main goal right now is to reduce my physical TBR, so I've been piling appropriate books on a table and only allowing myself to read from that stack (and not buying any other books). In this stack for July I'll have The Main 6 Novels; the Penguin Classics edition of Lady Susan, The Watsons, and Sanditon; and Longbourn. The only thing I have on my shelf by a contemporary is Ivanhoe, so I don't know. We'll see; I'm a rather slow reader and may decide to bag this one. I love the idea of reading Lover's Vows, though. It feels like a perfect choice!. I have several Austen-related books on my birthday wish list (birthday in July), so maybe something will come from that, but I don't know what!
Wow. You are reading Jane Fairfax by Joan Aiken. I had just messaged you about it on Facebook! Excited to know what you will think of it. I recall enjoying it. I also have A Life in Small Things and was considering reading that, too. A Woman of Color is now on my TBR.
Big Jane Fairfax fan here too(I've read it twice). Lol....and it's soooo much better than Aiken's completion of The Watsons. I'm sure JA would have some "choice" words for what Aiken did in that book. One day I hope to "write" that scene in fanfiction.net. :)
I am planning to re-read Mansfield Park and Persuasion, read some of JA's letters, The Other Bennet Sister and then watch the Sally Hawkins and Rupert Penry-Jones version of Persuasion which I love. I have a couple of books on the Georgians to choose from for the non-fiction.
It's my first time for Jane Austen July and I am excited to read Mansfield Park for the first time! You're making me want to listen to the audiobook of Pride and Prejudice, it sounds great.
Because of your Jane Austen July I reread P&P every year now too! I can recommend the Emilia Fox audiobook version as well if you want to mix it up sometime :-)
Hooray for Jane Austen July! I can't wait to chat about Jane Austen's legacy and how it's portrayed in biographies with you. I also can't wait to hear about the proof copies, especially Jane Austen Early and Late. I really want to hear what you think of Sansei and Sensibility! I bet you'll like it in a way that I didn't. I never even made it to the stories that were related to Jane Austen. I'll chat with you more on voxer.
I recently discovered that there's a Persuasion audiobook narrated by Olivia Williams (who played Jane Austen in Miss Austen Regrets), and I can't wait to listen to it. There's also a (free) new Persuasion audiobook on Spotify narrated by Cynthia Erivo!
I'll be joining #JaneAustenJuly 👋😁 looking through my books tomorrow but I'll be reading Mansfield Park, The Other Bennett Sister and Lady Catherine's Necklace. NF Jane Austen at Home . Just some of my ideas . Looking forward to this 👍
Hello. Normally I never do Tbr. I choose the books to read according to the publications or my interests at the moment. Your videos are always interesting.
I was waiting for your announcement, Katie. So excited! 😃👍 I am going to read Mansfield Park, Lady Susan and Sense and sensibility. I am really interested in A memoir of Jane Austen by her nephew. Thank you for your recommendations! Enjoy your reading!! From Barcelona!😊📚🙋♀️
Not even on Booktube and I still love July for Jane Austen July! A Jane Austen video for every morning when I’m getting ready for work 😍 Are you excited for the new Persuasion adaptations they’re making? I’m happy but nervous as Persuasion is my favourite book and I’m afraid they’ll mess it up but there will always still be that BBC one you mention whatever else - though I think I like the newer one slightly more
I plan to read Kate Westwood retelling/sequel to Persuasion. I don't know if it's any good, all I know is that the Crawford siblings from Mansfield Park are supposed to appear in it.
I'm going to read Mansfield Park (my fave Austen) and Persuasion , Northanger Abbey and possibly a nice new edition of P&P with letters. Also, Lady Susan, A Simple Story by Elizabeth Inchbald, The Heiress by Molly Greeley and Elegant Etiquette in the 19th C 😆
This is going to be great! I'm hoping to read Lady Susan's and Matildia by Mary Shelly! Though ill be honest I don't really watch TV so I'll probably skip those prompts 🤷🏼♀️
I am trying to choose my non fiction book for JAJ still. Running out of time so I must pin it down. This is the year I will finally read Sanditon. I have avoided it because I hate unfinished stories. At least with the Watsons there was an idea of how she planned to resolve it. Revisting Persuasion will be a treat. Tilly and I read Lover's Vows last year and connecting it to Mansfield Park was fascinating.
I'm very excited for Jane Austen July! I love A Memoir of Jane Austen and I gonna read it again next month. I feel James Edward and his sisters saw Jane more like their dearest aunt than anything else which I think it's very sweet but some readers may not like it. I'm curious for your reaction ^^ Paula Byrne's biography is also on my tbr but I'm not sure if I will manage to read it for the challenge. Great tbr, Katie :)
Believe it or not, I have never read Jane Austen before. I've experienced all six of her main novels through various adaptations, but I haven't read any of the originals yet. I suppose I should start with Pride and Prejudice. I've considered reading Lady Susan, since it's short and easy to squeeze in, but it probably shouldn't be the first Jane Austen I read. @@katiejlumsden I think a good option for the contemporary of Jane Austen challenge might be to read something by Ann Radcliffe to get the flavor of early gothic literature and better appreciate the parody in Northanger Abbey. I'm thinking A Sicilian Romance might be a gentler introduction for Radcliffe beginners than the sprawling Mysteries of Udolpho, although I've heard The Italian is also a good option.
The other option main option for a contemporary of Jane Austen, I think, would be to read something by Sir Walter Scott, but that would involve having to choose between Waverley, Rob Roy, Ivanhoe, or The Bride of Lammermoor. (I suppose Waverley would have been clearly published during Austen's lifetime, since I once heard a quote of her reaction to it in an English novel class.)

I suspect I'll be doing more than one comment here. I'm going to start early on this list! And yes, what could be a better habit than to read pride and prejudice every single year?? 💕
I read A Life in Small Things for Jane Austen July last year and quite enjoyed it. A lot of my enjoyment came from the fact that I knew barely nothing about Austen or about the Georgian period, so it was very educational for me. I liked how it was structured around objects and explained how those objects were important to Georgian life and how they would have affected Austen's life and career. Hope you enjoy it! I don't have my TBR up yet for this year but I will be reading Emma with some real-life friends and watching the adaptation :)
It would be so interesting to read Lover's Vows and see what all the drama and scandal was about in Mansfield Park! I'm going to be rereading Persuasion.

it was Jane Austen June for me as I read Emma which i really enjoyed. Great characters, very entertaining reading :)

The Paula Byrne book is EXCELLENT! I just bought it and read it this spring, and it was so enlightening!
So excited for this year’s JAJ! Reading Lovers vow is brilliant!
