Lol Yes is easily my favorite prog band. I can’t believe you were able to break this song down so easily. It’s such an effects heavy song it almost doesn’t even sound like a guitar.
Now that I'm retired, I've got lots of time to learn some of my favorite songs. I saw the band playing YES songs with Jon Anderson, Rick wakeman, Trevor Rabin at the palms in Las Vegas. Loved watching Trevor Rabin. What a master guitar player!!!
I learn alot from Carl! In fact, I'm just over a year in playing electric guitar as an older adult. And found the courage to make my own cover channel lol. Many I learned from Carl! 🤘
I was probably 10 or 11 when this came out.. my god did they play the hell out of this on the radio.. probably their last and biggest hit. This brings back so many memories! Love it..
The "Smoke on the Water" riff of the '80s was, wait for it... several riffs, including: Pop Muzik, My Sharona, Super Freak, Rock Lobster, Rocking the Casbah, Let's Dance, Under Pressure, White Wedding, Money for Nothing... and of course, Billy Jean.
Dude.. I gotta say, I absolutely LOVE your videos. I’ve learned so much from you, and really appreciate everything you do! I started playing guitar at 10, but dropped it in favor of bass.. eventually about 30 years later Covid hit, and I decided to pick up guitar again. Since then I’ve learned more songs than I can honestly even remember, tons of techniques, and am getting better every day, and I still visit your channel regularly! Thank you for what you do! Keep ‘em coming! 🤘🏽
By God! Is this the very first Yes tune you're covering?! C'mon Dude! Please help us out with other iconic Yes riffs and songs! Steve Howe is an all time hall of famer, pillar of our modern era!
This song has been in my brain since it first came out, and the guitar parts have always kinda mystified me (other than the opening chords, and even with that I didn't realize that TR uses the low E string for that Fat A). After seeing you play through the clean rhythm part, I now know why I could never figure it out by ear (mine isn't that great). And also, I knew he used an (Eventide?) harmonizer on the solo, but I didn't realize he has both the 5th above and an octave below happening. Now I do -- thanks for taking the time to do this vid!
Great job Carl. As usual! I have learned a lot from your videos, and i definitly say that i feel im progressing when it is easier for me learn faster from your videos
Wow, what a great lesson choice Carl! I love Trevor’s guitar work on this album! If you ever get the urge to visit another song on this album “Changes” or “It Can Happen” would be great! Thanks!
Owner of a Lonely Heart...YES!! If there is one song that defines the 80s, this is it...and what an epic solo! The video was on heavy rotation on MTV back in the day, and now thanks to Carl, we'll all be jamming along... Can't thank you enough sensei !!!
Carl. It’s good to see you having fun after what you’ve been through. Makes me want to give it a try tonight! Thanks again for another great video lesson.
It was produced by Trevor Horn so of course it's extremely well produced. He's one of the best producers in history since the 1970s. He was the singer for YES and produced many other number one acts.
Look up Maddie Rice. When she played this at School of Rock she played the complete solo without a harmonizer. As the music director I was blown away! No wonder she plays on SNL now. Great video!
Great stuff as always Carl! Please, please do a lesson for Night Ranger's Don't Tell Me You Love Me. Such a classic 80s shred guitar song with 2 different styles of solos! Thank you for what you do!
A few things after listening to the multitracks: During the verse there are two panned guitar tracks playing a similar but slightly different verse riff. One is playing ever so slightly palm muted while another is playing fully palm muted. It seems to me, at least during the first verse, that neither guitars play the 7th fret G string D and open D string together at all. What I'm hearing is the more open guitar playing the 7th fret D as the last note in the phrase, and the fully muted guitar playing the open D as that last note. I think for the earlier part of the riff where it seems like those two notes are being picked is just an artifact of the heaps of 80s chorus drenching the tracks. After that part, those notes being held out sound more to me like: open high E, B string on the 5th fret, G string on the 7th fret. I don't think there's any octave up effects on this part. The little arpeggiation in between these bits (E, D, G, D, G... labelled "GTR 3" in the multitrack) sound a lot like harmonics to me. They can be a bit of a stretch to play, but then he plays a three note harmonic arpeggiation on that same track that just isn't possible on a guitar in standard tuning, which makes me think he is either really quickly and cleanly playing artificial harmonics or he's playing a guitar that has been tuned in a different way.
Thanks for a really awesome tutorial Carl. I love your smile of satisfaction at the end of the solo demonstration. I would be super keen to know what harmoniser you're using for the solo? I'm using a Digitech Ricocet and an MXR Submachine trying to get "that" sound. So far...no cigar. Clues??? Cheers and keep up the great work.
Estou voltando a tocar , depois de 45 anos parado totalmente. Já toquei violão quando criança, agora comprei guitarra e voltei às aulas com um professor. Meu grande sonho é aprender a tocar 2 músicas . Essa música do Yes e " Do It again" do Steele Dan .
Awesome. Very informative. But perhaps you can play two bars straight through without stopping to explain the fingering so we can make sense of the groove. I personally would find it easier to get the feel if you were to repeat 4-bar segments a few times while I played along. Timing is just as integral to nailing these some-what tricky parts as is fingering. Wait! There it is! Now you're rolling. I spoke too soon.
Hey carl I'm just an old man that watches your tutorials all the time and can really relate to your teaching I know you must get alot requests but I'm desperate to learn a song by bto called rock is my life and nobody on UA-cam teaches it" I'm not schooled on diminished type chords and having trouble figuring it out it's an awsom song could you please" please" please"consider doing a tutorial on it you would make an old mans week.!! dude you rock
what key should i set the HR pedal?
Crazy how such a simple riff, with some room to breathe, can feel so massive.
agree I love this riff
It's due in no small part to the tone and effects, as well as the assertive attack.
as memorable as the legendary riff may be, the beautiful main verse takes you right back to a 1983 summer's day INSTANTLY
