Im 44 and started playing guitar when I was 13. Everything I learned was by memory. I never took the time to 'learn guitar". I put the guitar down about 10 years ago when my 1st kid was born. But last week I decided to open the guitar case for the first time in a decade. Now, I really want to learn the guitar. Learn it properly. So I've been binge watching and practicing you over the past week. I really appreciate your taking to time to make these. I'll be purchasing your book.
Even, Angry, Dogs, Get, Bones, Eventually……….I taught myself the fret board pretty quickly by learning where all the A BC D are located. Then I drew a full size fret board, made lots of copies of it and then filled in the blanks. And, I always speak the note names when I play scales. I’m a retired airline pilot. We learn how to simplify complicated materials and then smash those numbers, acronyms and mandatory memory items into our heads. Every time you move to a new jet, the process begins anew and never ends…There will be a test😅
I really appreciate you taking time to explain this. I know it's very basic, but somehow I missed it years ago when I started. Picking up the guitar at 70+, I needed to hear it.
Ricky, you're a gem! I'm an aging beginner guitarist and have learned sooo much from all your helpful fretboard videos...thank you so much. Love your friendly and witty presentation style too. Please keep up your great work. If ever I get to Huddersfield, would love to buy you a pint...or an eggs and bacon breakfast, if you prefer!
I watched two of your videos and i bought the book on amazon. For years ive wanted to learn and ive tried 3 seperate times and your videos were more understandable than anything else ive ever watched or read. Thank you, i hope with your help i learn this time.
What you have just done is to give me the best reason to memorize the fret board. Your explanations of how to go about this incredible feat. It is the best example I have ❤heard since I picked up a guitar at age 71 to teach myself how to play chords and songs. I am now 79, but here I am with you making sense to me so far on being able to perhaps learn the notes on the fret board. Most other so-called guitar guru's said that, as long as you can find the A note, the rest will happen like magic 🎩 😮😅😢! So I have now found you that I am in hopes that you can say some magic words, so I can peace together the rest. Does that sound easy enough for you to explain things to me. Now, I am a LEFT-handed player. My right hand is my fretting hand. I can play roughly 250 songs using chords. But I want to be able to play up and down the fret board like a pro. Keep it simple and understandable. Thanks so much. I will SUSCRIBE to you and be able to learn from you. This is no joke. You can laugh now if need be.😅😂
I’ve looked at a lot of ways to memorize the fret board on you tube and this is by far the simplest way I’ve seen to get it down. Yes I’m an older dude.
I appreciated this lesson very much. Arrived home with my first guitar yesterday, got it tuned and made some thrashing electric guitar racket for awhile. This morning, I wanted to actually learn something about this confusing new gizmo which still feels awkward in my hands and across my lap, keeps bumping into the arm of the chair, desk, wall, etc. It might as well be a piano, oboe or drum set - any of which I could use to make a ton of noise, but about which I know absolutely zero as far as employing them in a pleasing, musical fashion. I had no idea what the marks on the fretboard represented, so this lesson gave me a start. I've watched it over and over and begun a notebook in order to retain each bit of information about the E strings and fretboard markings accurately in memory. Printed out some blank fretboard diagrams too. Your expertise keeps me interested in learning to play and lends direction as I eagerly sit down to enjoy this new hobby. Thanks, Ricky.
As a newbie in my late 50's who's decided to try and teach himself guitar I thank you very much for breaking this down in such a way that I can actually wrap my head around it. 👍
Teach himself guitar? 🤔🤨🤪 Sorry sir I know what you mean just, it always sounds strange to me when people say it like that lol. Like, idk... how can someone teach someone something they don't know, let alone teach themselves something that the student knows just as little as the teacher knows. And well.... ahhh, now you're doing my head in making it think so early befire my morning coffee so all thats left to say is ... 🤔🤨😒😵💫
Hi I'm having more lessons since retiring as learnt since I was 11 playing guitar. But got rusty. I needed to do something with my music as it's great therapy. I like this saying to remember the notes. Every Adult does Get Better Eventually. Alison
I finally have some quality time to spend learning the guitar and excellent tutorial. Wanted to share my mnemonic on Gift of the "Gab" on E string and the notes next to it on the A-string.. Gift of the "GAB" Causes Distorted Ears (C,D,E).
my favourites got to be there's sharps/flats between each notes apart from BC & EF Be Cause Everythings F..... also your lesson on Chunking was probably most useful bit of info as to how to memorise the fretboard I've ever seen.
I'm only an air guitarist, yet I found this informative, gave me a better understanding of the frets and answered a couple of questions about chords, thank you
I just started writing things out on fretboard diagrams last week before hearing of your channel this week. Before I even saw this video I had proved to myself that plotting chords, I would find with my ear, onto a fretboard diagram made the imaginary connection of all the notes into a solid thing I could see in a logical manner then apply. I prefer to write tunes using my ear to guide me at first then I can grab my own handwritten diagrams to fill in the blanks, see if there’s anything interesting diatonically, or search for chords I’ve found in that key (or transpose my chords into the new key). Writing it out does technically add another step in the composition process, but I can already tell that by writing it out I eventually won’t have to. Thanks for the videos
Hi Ricky. Another great tutorial. Just a wee question, not important, just being curious. The Hz for each string...E string = 82.41Hz and the A string = 110Hz. Mind you some 'geek' would refer to that just to show off...if you add all the string Hz together would they add up to 440hz as the guitar is tuned to? Again, not important as the the E A D G B E works fine for me and every other guitarist. Great tutorials.
Eyup Ricky, another excellent informative video on the notes of the E String. On the gift of the GAB mnemonic you eloquently explain, just peek below on the A string in the GAB area and you have the notes Cadburys Dairy Egg CDE. So a guitarist with the gift of the GAB can be awarded a Cadburys Dairy Egg. Love your work, always learning from your 80 lessons on You Tube.🎸🎸🎸
Eyup Paul! Thank you! The eyebrows are definitely gaining their own lifeforce. Yeah we should get together again. A pint at Rap's place when a band is on might be cool
Technically a power chord is a dyad made of a root and 5th but you can play more strings and double roots and 5ths. Then you can get silly and invert the 5th into a 4th…it depends how heavy you want them to sound!
I'm an old gezzer who is just starting in music. I'll blame it on boredom. My fat fingers could not handle the fret board on a guitar, so I just purchased a Baritone Ukulele. It has more space on the fret board, so even I should be able to handle that. NOT!!! I am putting my hand in awkward angles, but I still can't fret triple finger cords. Do you know of a method to get my fingers more vertical on the fret board? Maybe old people can't bend that last knuckle enough? Help!
Just watch your wrist and how you're holding your arm. Angles of arm and wrist make a difference. Relax your fingers or they'll cramp up and make it harder to change chords. It'll get better. Just enjoy the new hobby.

Yikes. I never thought of that. The process of flying an airplane is never as easy as jumping into a standardized cabin of a different automobile.
Thanks for that
@dustdevilz4771. What you said in your comment has helped me more than what that bozo is saying at lightning speed in the video. Thank you so much.
And if you keep your nose up in the turns you won’t lose any altitude. Maybe a little top rudder?

I really like Rickey’s way of teaching. I’ve seen lots but Rickey really breaks it down to make it very easy to understand.

Wow. Just wow. I feel like you cracked my head open and poured in knowledge I've been trying to get for years! Thank you so much! Sorry about Eddie...
Restarted after 7 years of lesson in my teens. This is helpful as it was not common to play on the 12th fret. Great stuff. I'm 68
