Thanks for the great and clear explanation as usual. I have a question regarding als. I happen to see it a lot in the present tense and when I looked it up in the dictionary I found that it could be used in the present to mean "as soon as". So, did I get it right? If yes, then do you use it commonly in this sense and is it grammatically correct?

Cheat sheet for English speakers:
if can be at least 3 different words in German: falls, ob, and wenn
falls = in case/if
ob = whether/if
wenn = when/whenever/if
When translating "if" from English to German think of which word that same "if" can be switched out to from the above ^^
"If / In case you buy the dog..." = "FALLS du den Hund kaufst..."
"It won't matter if / whether you sleep in today" = "Es ist egal, OB du heute ausschläfst"
"If / When the future allows it" = "wenn die Zukunft es zulässt"

Can i use Wenn with Model verbs in Präteritum?

When I originally learned "als", I was told that it was only used in past tense, but wasn't told that "Wenn" can also be used in past tense...so my understanding of it before just now was that you COULDN'T use "wenn" in past tense.
Wenn seems to automatically be used as "if" (or a conditional) in future tense, because nobody's sure exactly what will happen in the future: z.B: "Wenn ich genug Geld sparen würde, würde ich einen Flugschein nach Singapur kaufen." (If I were to save enough money, I'd buy a plane ticket to Singapore.) Richtig, oder?
