    Really lovely. Thank you both for this interview and putting this place on my radar. It ticks so many boxes for me. I love small, quaint, places with cool/mild climates and, ideally, a lot of cloud cover. It's hard to find. I sure wish '2020' hadn't happened... I would very likely have pursued it.

    Sounds like an amazing place. I consider myself a libertarian and I moved to live in Liechtenstein in the middle of the covid pandemic to satiate my hunger for freedom and in search of a better life. But it seems that those values of freedom and self-responsibility have started to fall apart, they started initiating the bad habits of the neighboring countries. Especially the covid restrictions, now I cannot go most places since I am not vaccinated and don't have the covid passport and I even have to wear a mask in the office. Seems that Sark would be a step up from Liechtenstein. The only option that I know of that would offer this kind of freedom is Liberland but I get a feeling that is still not recognized enough from other countries.

    Sark's free-market system has been a disaster and the island is far from the paradise as presented by Mr Lorenz.
    Rich immigrants and private companies have caused a lot of trouble for Sark (and other Channel Islands). Sark is practically ruled by the Barkley brothers who manipulate local politics to fashion the island into their Little England hermit kingdom. In 2008 they manipulated the local elections by attempting to force hand-picked puppet candidates to be elected to represent their corporate interests and intimidated the opposition candidates with aggressive legal action and slandered them in their funded newsletter (the editor of said newspaper has been investigated for 'criminal harassment' against 10% of the island's population). When the local population didn't vote the way they wanted them to, the Barkley brothers shut down all the hotels on the island (which they owned) which put 170 islanders out of work (1/3 of the entire population!) and crippled Sark's tourism industry. To this day they openly intimidate and bully anyone who criticises their corporate governance of the island. Sark is far from a 'volunteer society', if you don't stand up to your billionaire overlords. Perhaps this is why Mr Lorenz claims that here is no dissent on the island? Sark is as libertarian as billionaires living in a literal castle overlooking the peasantry demanding their rights. Though perhaps a country being run at the whim of billionaires like a kingdom is the ideal for libertarians?
    Another example of a private company ruling the lives of the everyman on Sark is 'Sark Electricity Ltd' which has charged extortionate prices for energy because they hold a complete monopoly, making it difficult for the elderly to make it through winter. When the government of Sark tried to regulate the prices to be fairer, Sark Electricity shut off the energy supply to the entire island and held the people's wellbeing has hostage because they didn't get their way. Compare that to the other Channel Island of Jersey, where they have a government owned electricity company, the electricity in Jersey is some of the cheapest and most reliable in Western Europe.
    Rich immigrants seeking to evade tax have not only ruined the economy and local culture of Sark, but have also done the same in Jersey (such as the ongoing population and housing crisis). Of course that is what happens when you immigrant to a country seeking only money and sunshine instead of learning about the local language and history. Please consider what effect immigrating will have on a country before going there. I would also recommend actually doing research into the adverse aspects of Sark which Mr Lorenz curiously does not touch upon in this video.

      I don't see how rich people moving to the island "hurts the economy" if anything I'd think it would help it but the rest is kind of disturbing to hear.
      Tell me why isn't there competitors for electricity on Sark? Why no solar options ect, there's ways to fix this that don't require the government socializing the power plant.

      If the island went 100% libertarian AnCap then they couldn't harass islanders to vote a certain way because there would be no government to vote people into.

      @@NeonAnimeDreams Obviously, immigration of high earners do not always harm local economies (and the opposite has sometimes been true, sure), but the Barkley brothers are a starkly direct example of rich people hurting the economy of Sark. I am certainly not saying that people should not move to Sark. I am saying that they should know the truth that this video does not tell before going and to consider what what impact one might have on the island considering.

      There are not any competitors for electricity on Sark because it is a small island with limited space (thus there is not much room for another company to share the limited facilities) and also because I don't think the company in question would be willing to give up their monopoly so easily, considering they threatened to wipe out the energy to the island over some minor legislation. Have in mind that the Barkley Brothers bullied a ambulance-boat sailor off the island for transporting sick patients to Guernsey instead of using their transport helicopter. In other words, attempts to threaten monopolies in Sark are utterly futile.
      The Barkley brothers wouldn't need a government to get their way, they use intimidation and collateral economic damage to make sure that their financial interests are not threatened. Whether it be using bullying tactics to make sure only their ambulance service is used, or intimidation to suppress those who write critically about them; the Barkley brothers would become the feudal lords of Sark and Breqcou with or without a puppet government in place (if they haven't already achieved that anyway).
      Concerning solar, that's why most eco-friendly countries offer solar grants. I wasn't even considering footing the cost of setting up solar panels if it wasn't for the solar panel grants from my government. It is funny that you say that government socialisation isn't required; I live just across the water in Jersey where our electricity company is 51% publicly owned and we have the cheapest, greenest and most reliable energy in all of Britain 😂

    • @NeonAnimeDreams
      @NeonAnimeDreams 2 роки тому

      @@NorseNorman when you say they bully competitor away what exactly do you mean by that? How do they accomplish such intimidation that health care workers from another island would be afraid to perform their duties?
      If the Barkley brothers are threating violence can't they be charged with a crime?
      I'd assume they don't own the police on the island correct?
      Not sure where you looked to by your solar panels but I know of places you can get 500 watt panels for $400, most houses only need 1200 to 1500 watts, so it's not that expensive if you know where to buy from.
