- My buddy and I were clearing a right of way for the electric lines and came across this fawn trapped in the fall path of the tree we were about to trim. He was tangled in some thorns and was pretty shaken up after we cut him loose, so we started rubbing his belly to calm him down.... which worked a little too well, as you can see.
He followed us around the job site like a lost puppy for about an hour until I noticed a doe watching us from the hillside. Assuming this was his mother, I carried him about halfway up the hill while she watched attentively. I sat him down, he ran straight to her, and they walked off together.

It depends on the connection that cat feels toward the one trying to rub the belly. I don't rough house with my cats, they rough house with eachother. With me its about comfort so I guess knowing that I won't try to tickle or start play fighting, its a trust thing.

The description mentions that he was returned to his momma that was watching nearby. And I had a random thought about that. Animals must be very bewildered by human kindness. In most cases, a predator species scooping up your child means your child is gone, but he just showed the little deer some kindness and sent it on its way. It serves no advantage for humans to be kind, we just choose to be, and that concept must be very alien to a lot of animals.

They are not bewildered, and there's also reasons why kindness exists, it's not exclusive to humans. We are also not predators of deer. While we do eat them, we aren't primarily adapted to hunt them nor they adapted to run from us. Kindness, or rudeness, is an awareness of the behavior of other creatures. They're doing construction, it's no place for a deer, yet the deer is there, and vice versa there are humans in front of the deer and they're trying to move it, the deer doesn't know what to do either. So in the absence of any obvious way to interact with each other, they communicate what's on their mind, in either a friendly or a rude way. The deer just wants the humans to stop, the humans want to move the deer but not be rude about it. And so there they would stand until momma intervened or the humans decided they were ok with being rude. Kindness exists because everything's easier when everyone cooperates, but rudeness exists for when a peaceful way can't be reached.

Yeah, this video just kind of annoyed me. Everyone is "dawwing" in the comments, but it seemed what was actually happening is not what everyone thinks. The feeling of falling as the guy SLOWLY moved him probably scared him enough to cry out. Being held he probably was just terrified enough to remain still and silent.
I doubt this was some fairly tale where this wild animal suddenly was domesticated in 5 minutes of petting.
There's another video where a fawn comes running up to someone filming and then collapses. Same thing here, everyone acts like it came to get pet. But really, it collapsed out of terror when realizing it ran up to a human.

Wild animals tend to avoid humans but when they discover that our hands are the most effective scratcher they stay lol
I believe the reason humans have been able to domesticate so many animals is because of their dexterous hands. Most animals have to settle with rubbing up against a tree or a rock, but if they have a human friend they can get right down to the spot that itches.

I love how animals all seem to go through the same logical progression of:

3) You're okay.
4) I think you're actually nice.

The same even applies to humans, lol. Any time you encounter an animal, it starts with caution. If it's kind, you immediately want to love it and hug it and to let it lick you and love you back.
Regarding #6, when you cradle an animal they're calm because they have no control, as soon as you get them close to being on their sides, they freak-the-fuck out because you're fucking with their equilibrium and they're thrashing about trying to right themselves up again because they're not thinking "I want you to hold me longer, daddy" but in fact probably thinking "OH SWEET JESUS FUCK I'M ABOUT TO FALL AND BREAK MY NECK"
Like have you ever cradled a dog? A cat? A rabbit? Any other pet? They all fucking lose their mind trying to right themselves back up as soon as they feel control coming back to them.
Animals are fucking stupid as hell, and don't understand when there's no danger... I wish people would stop mistaking fear and confusion with *insert human emotion* that makes yall feel good.
Reminds me of that insufferable video where everyone in the comments are sucking each other's dicks, because a squid "thanked" a stranger by using it's ink, an escape mechanism used to run away from predators out of fear.
