- While there's nothing they can do on land that completely compares to handling a wipeout on a 50-foot + wave at Jaws or Nazaré, big wave surfers are increasingly finding new, creative ways to get as close as possible to the harrowing experience. Join Kai Lenny, Lucas Chumbo, Ian Walsh, Justine Dupont, and other elite Red Bull surfers for a truly unique training mission in Hawaii.

This feels like an analogy for life and why we shouldn’t be so upset when stressful and difficult things happen to us. Those stressful things are helping us develop strengths and skills, so down the road we can conquer even bigger challenges and achieve greater goals.
It is, the key is the CORE confidence of having lived through a few NDE's. Or times in a long Hold Down, when You thought You;d "Had it," but made it out safely.
I think good training would be to fill a giant drum full of water to the top, put the person in it and close the lid and push the drum down a rough hill where it rolls for 30 sec -1 min banging the person around while they hold their breath, then a person at the bottom opens the lid and lets them out.
Dude…😂
Chumbo's one to look out for. Absolute charger.
Two things I appreciate about this video. Those who are highly skilled at surfing big waves constantly try to improve; and, the honesty to say that nothing can really simulate getting slammed by one of those puppies!
It's fun seeing The Crew together! Great flip off the helicopter!!!
Awesome to see the crew training together like this !!! 🤙
Hey
LOLzzz😂🤣 @4:30 Come On Now....forreal...raise your thumbs up if you for a second thought he was gonna drive them off of a cliff into some deep water at no less than 30 miles an hour??😎🥺😯😅
get a non big wave surfer to train stress management to big wave surfers?.Nice video and its awesome that people train outside of surfing for surfing...love it
What lolololol
I used to do the Carry a Heavy Rock Trick that Derrick Doerner introduced.
So stoked to see this happen 🔥👑
I've surfed with a few of these guys on Big Days. I have learned to normalize the air coming in and out of my nose depending on conditions. Regulates pressure a bit inside my head. It is an instinctual thing, I am sure we all do it.
Gets better every time I watch it...
Amazing feelings coming again when i look this video, hug for all, great xperience impossible to forget 🙏
This training doesn’t look very effectual.
Take the FII Waterman Survival course. It’s taught by free diving professionals. You do breath hold exercises while doing strenuous tasks. You learn real breathe hold techniques and it opens your eyes to what is possible if you remain calm and go slow.
Yeah because just before you wipeout on a wave time stands still while you do your ten inhalation breaths and then descent into the water just as those free divers do. Free diving techniques does not apply in a wipeout.
rks note ....If that was the sum of techniques being taught, it wouldn’t be very useful either. You can probably view the curriculum online. I took the course and found it very informative, especially the water rescue techniques. Many pro surfers take the course.
Agree, looks really dumb.
Exactly. First you have to paddle into a giant wave. This is the time for breathing exercises and now your just out of breath on the take off. Survival is up to the individual and how many waves hold you down after falling. Stay calm while being slammed to the bottom twice. It's part of the fun. You'll just pop back up.
Almost any training will be more effective than this hooey. The real training they get is in the water this is a joke.
They train and maybe 1 year later or 10 years the get in a wave how clothes got in a washing mashine and they cant do anything... You have my respect and i hope the best
0:35 “WTF did I get myself into”
And he is, under weighted-- in Hawaiian regs. = strength, ability!
They all act like there are no sharks D:
ive been in a car accidents at 100+ the force was nothing compared to some of my biggest wipe outs
ah stress inoculation increasing the amount of stress you get, sounds sorta like school
Baguette
Like avalanche training except they made it look dramatic for surf culture.
lmao except that avalanche is always chasing you. Everytime. Unlike snowboarding/skiing. I love snowboarding too but it doesn't compare to the dangers of boh wave surfing in my opinion.
How long do they need to hold breath for on a big wave wipeout . Cool vid
40 seconds give or take. Could seem like minutes
@@maattttt07 wow
maattttt07 40 seconds would have to be a massive wave but then again it said big waves surfing so yeah and it definitely feels likes minutes I got held under for 1 seconds and it’s felt like 30
@@mattyvlogs8074 do you wear a boyancy vest?
@Optic500 nah
can i enjoy to the team please /...???
What do these people do for full time employment 😂😂😂
Wow this looks... average. Tug of war, flips in the water, diving. Was the helicopter necessary or they could've just jumped off a cliff?
Had tp turn the volume off due to noise.
I'm all for big wave safety but wtf is this? How bout grab some boards and go surf some "intermediate" breaks or something. Spend some time practicing... or shall I say....surfing?
