      Have fun enjoying listening to our vinyl records!
      Woke up just now (Sunday morning) and have been listening to my rp6 too in my room! I'm listening to it now as I write to you :-)
      Best regards my friend,
      Ian.

    The SME arm works differently from most arms. Because the headshell only has holes for mounting the cartridge instead of slots, the cartridge position in the headshell is fixed. With this arm you adjust the overhang by moving the entire arm on it's base. The spindle to pivot distance will vary, depending on the distance on the cartridge between the mounting holes and the stylus tip. 215.35mm may be an average value, but it will vary +/- a few millimeters depending on the cartridge used.

      I'm also struggling to achieve overhang of SME 3012R with Ache headshell and Koetsu urushi. How do you know that you have achieved the right measurement. If you put S/P 296.5 Ache headshell or even SPU, would to set on DR. FEICKERT overhang point (first step). Any suggestion?

    • @gotham61
      @gotham61 8 місяців тому +1

      @@khurshidalam4663 If you are using the Arche headshell, you will now have two places where you can adjust the overhang. Either by moving the cartridge in the headshell, or by sliding the entire arm on the base. If you plan to also use a SPU, I would adjust the overhang using the sliding base to be correct with the SPU, then you can adjust the other cartridge's position in the Arche to match. Note that by the time the 3012-R came out, SME had changed to using Baerwald alignment. You should stick with that to get the correct offset angle with the SPU.

    • @khurshidalam4663
      @khurshidalam4663 7 місяців тому

      @gotham61 so are you suggesting that Dr. Feickert's measurement of overhang is universal and right (first point). I will do some experiments and share. Many thanks for sharing your thoughts.

      @@khurshidalam4663 The Feickert protractor gives you a choice of using one of the three common alignments. Baerwald, Loefgren, and Stevenson, they are marked B, L, and S on the protractor.

    Another superb and enthusiastic video from you Ian, top job! After finding your channel, I have changed my vinyl front end for a Technics SL-1210GR with Nagaoka MP-110. Could you do a video on this combination? There are some issues I have... Even with the arm fully 'down' the VTA does not seem right, the Nagaoka body seems too 'short', I wondered if I need a cartridge shim for this combination? It looks like you use a Jelco headshell with this cart in your videos with this combo (Technics SL-1200 / MP-110 or MP-150) does this solve the problem of getting the arm parallel to the record surface? Your thoughts on the best load for this cart would be appreciated too, 47k, 68k, 150pF, 200pF. We ask a lot of you, but it's because we trust you. Love this combination by the way, tight, detailed, precise and so musical.

      Dear Buddy, :-D the paper protractors work just as fine. Settings on the printer must be spot-on as well, as sometimes what is printed may be scaled up or down by 1mm or so... :-D apologies, not to demean your printer at your home buddy :-D, otherwise, after printing on a 100gm thick piece of paper, it should work just fine, perfectly :-D!! @@HiViNywschannel A cost effective way to avoid the possible inaccuracies of printed paper protractors is to buy an Ortofon alignment protractor with an accurate pre-drilled spindle hole. It is a plastic template which is stiffer and easier to use than the printed paper type. It uses the more common Baerwald geometery and costs approx 5 euros. Sorry Ian, but personally I would never fork out the sort of money being asked for Dr Feickert's protractor, which basically has no real advantages over my cheapy Ortofon protractor, at least none worth paying that amount of money for.

      Hi Ian, I have an answer directly from Pansonic support:
      Dear Jan ,
      Thank you for your e-mail.
      In response to your query, I would like to inform you that the original Technics gauge was designed to be quick and simple. So anyone could very easily get the turntable going and sounding good.
      The newer methods take much longer to use and set up. They have different advantages. In terms of minimising tracking error and distortion.
      The official Technics answer is that the supplied gauge is the best compromise in terms of distortion. I would recommend the Dr. Feckert set up procedure. This seems to be the most highly regarded method.
      I trust that the above information will be of assistance to you. However, of course, if you should have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact us.
