  • A day of trials and frustrations behind the camera, did not take away from another fantastic 'Winter Steam Gala' at the Great Central Railway. The return of the winter gala at the GCR came as welcome news, after its absence in 2021, with it being held this year over the weekend of Friday 28th - Sunday 30th of January.
Appearing courtesy of Southern Locomotives Ltd, 34072 "257 Squadron" would be one of the star guests for the event, visiting from the Swanage Railway. It's presence completes an exchange, after GCR resident 2MT - 78018 spent the 2021 running season on the Dorset branch line. Also visiting for the event, would be 4MT Tank - 80080, courtesy of the Princess Royal Class Locomotive Trust.
The gala would see 8 steam locomotives in service during the event, operating a variety of passenger workings - including a two coach suburban set. In amongst the passenger runs, a range of demonstration freight services were also present on the railway. Bolstering the steam traction, a resident DMU could also be seen in service.
    Locomotives:
    BR(S) 'Battle of Britain' Class - 34072 "257 Squadron"
    BR(W) 6959 'Modified Hall' Class - 6990 "Witherslack Hall"
    BR Standard Class 2MT - 78018
    BR Standard Class 5MT - 73156
    Ex-LMS 8F Class - 48305
BR Standard Class 9F - 92214 "City of Leicester"
    BR Standard Class 4MT Tank - 80080
    BR Class 101 DMU - E51427+E59575+E50321
    BR(M) Class 2MT - 46521
Footnote: The camera suffered numerous issues over the course of the day, not least the lack of focus which can be seen at 17:13. Ultimately frustrating, but still, on to the next one.
All footage filmed on Saturday the 29th of January 2022.

Well that put a few ticks in the old ABC, never seen so much kit come out to play in one hit with some varied workings👍🏻 I suggest mainline rail should invest in a Bulleid leaf blower🤔😃 Bit windy round the turntables Matthew, but some cracking footage. Top marks to GC for a great display

It's always a good event to attend, if not for the specific locomotives, then the sheer amount of workings.
Slightly unfortunate, but the resulting atmospherics can't be knocked.
Thanks very much for the kind words, Bob!

Living next to a preserved railway is preferable to living next to the M1 methinks.
As long as the newbies don't get up a petition to close the line, noise, pollution etc.

Even if they did, the simple ruling of "the railway was here first" should apply.

I missed this for the first time in several years, due to Covid uncertainty leaving it late to book travel and accommodation plus it clashing with the Spa Valley Railway Beer Festival - which I did attend. Therefore it was very good to see this.

New housing developments springing up like mushrooms everywhere. The ones on the side of the track at5:20don't look too bad, at least they've got a bit of space, but what horrid crammed-in rabbit hutches those are on the other side (6:05) aren't they. The tall fences must make the gardens feel like prison exercise yards.
Anyway, sorry, the trains: Witherslack Hall makes a grand sight on the van train at08:00. Nice departure by 257 Squadron too.

We'll have to wait and see until it's all finished, but backing onto a preserved railway can't be a bad thing
Did get very lucky with the timing of the Hall and vans - paid dividends on atmospherics.

Excellent footage of the gala, the Bulleid pacific is the highlight for me. Seems a bit of a shame that an increasing proportion of the lineside is becoming swamped with modern housing developments. The guy at 23:52 made me laugh ;)

Thanks very much! It was great to see 257 out and about, earning her keep. The modern housing, I can stomach - but the constant overgrowing vegetation might become a problem.
The guy is a great sport - cracked me up when I saw him.

Well done, sticking with it and gathering some great shots - despite the camera/focus malfunctions. Your camera work is normally faultless and measured. But no one can avoid unexpected ‘technical’ hitches. Better luck on the next outing.

Excellent film. I live in Rothley and see the steam and hear the whistles from my house on Swithland Lane. Wonderful railway and I am a Friend. I was at this gala. The new horrible housing is near Loughborough and is , or course, a product of government demands to build everywhere and anywhere. How long before they moan about the smoke and noise?

As Nigel has said, if people buy a house near to a preserved railway, then the consequences are their own to deal with. Having said that, I've heard some horror stories about desperate 'Sales Assisstants' feeding potential buyers lies in order to make the sale. Best one, was in reference to a railway line over a garden fence: "Oh, the line is being re-routed in the next 3 years, so it won't be a problem for long" - the railway was the Midland Mainline.

Please no more 101 dmu's I've been trying to build a model of one and it's driving me CRAZY, its just problem after problem, and it was supposed to be a quick and easy carriage conversion, ah well I've given up now as its now accidentally got permanent chrome spray paint over one of the windows so might give a few months until I try again otherwise it might end up out the window haha 😄 😅

@@TheSouthernerYTChannel That's a good idea, but i failed to mention its for g scale in the garden, so it would be a lot of effort and money to have it just sit there, plus my layout is like a preserved line so I think near enough pristine is the look im going for. But good ideas anyway
