  • On the 2nd of January 1982, a special railtour was held on the East Coast Mainline to commemorate the withdrawal of the Class 55 'Deltic' locomotives from mainline service. The service, titled the 'Deltic Scotsman Farewell' featured both 55015 "Tulyar" and 55022 "Royal Scots Grey" as star traction, and brought an end to the class' 20 year reign on the ECML.
    Over the following 40 years, the Deltic Preservation Society has been a driving force behind the continued survival of members of the class. The DPS own and maintain no fewer than three complete Class 55's, among other artefacts and power units.
    To celebrate the occassion, as well as the ongoing acheivements of the DPS, a ceremonious running day was held at the Great Central Railway with DPS stalwart, 55019. 55019, although not one of the locos used on the original railtour, was the last 'Deltic' to haul a service train under BR, when it worked an Aberdeen to York service on the 31st of December 1981.
    55019 would make three return trips over the GCR from Loughborough to Leicester North, with a supporting service provided by a resident DMU. For the first return trip, engine No1 was used. On the second, engine No2. For the final return, both engines were fired up, producing the full bodied Napier Deltic roar that is synonymous with these locomotives. 55019 carried a wreath on the day, in memory of Roger Newling-Goode. Roger had been heavily involved with the DPS for the majority of its current 45 year tenure. He sadly passed away in late 2021, for which we offer our condolences.
    Locomotives:
    BR Class 55 'Deltic' - 55019 "Royal Highland Fusilier"
    BR Class 101 DMU - E50266+W59506+M50203
    All footage filmed on Sunday the 2nd of January 2022.

    Simply superb filming. Really well thought through shots, fantastic variety of points of view. Brilliantly edited. This did the Deltic the justice it always deserves. Well done!

    Excellent captures and a fitting memorial to these iconic machines.
    It’s a shame that a 75mph Loughborough to Rothley and return trip minus passengers wasn’t scheduled in.
    I suppose we should be thankful that this happened at all. Appreciate your efforts in bringing us this.

      Now that would've been a sight to see, but as you say, we're lucky to have had the day as it was. Twin engine on load 8 was a great spectacle.

    It always amazes me when you hear the clicks from an SLR came that is rapid firing, I can understand can't they do that in sport, all shots are different and you have the ability to get that perfect shot , but when taken photos of trains where the shots are one after another you just get a lot of the same shot where the train has only moved a minimal distance.
    Regardless, a great video of what I consider was the finest of first general diesels.
    The twin throbbing deep throated Napiers sounded fantastic

      Would suggest it can't be a 37 from Swanage - they don't have one. 6700 from the NRM is going there on loan though, I believe.

    I'm thinking she needs a good run on the mainline to clear out all that clag, not doing her a lot of good pottering about like that - not that I'm saying I didn't enjoy that alien Deltic sound😊 Thanks Matt👍🏻👍🏻

    • @TheSouthernerYTChannel
      @TheSouthernerYTChannel  2 роки тому

      Fingers crossed, if the mainline appeal the DPS are running for her gains the financial traction it needs, that sight might become a reality. Glad you enjoyed it!

      Why don't they have both engines running 🤔

    • @TheSouthernerYTChannel
      @TheSouthernerYTChannel  2 роки тому

      In full mainline spec, a Deltic is a 3,300hp, 100mph machine. On a preserved line running at 25mph, running on one engine at 1,650hp is more than enough. The use of both engines here, was purely for the spectacle.

      Main line or not, it makes no difference. Napier deltic engines always clag. It's what they do! If you look on the DPS site or others it explains why.

    Hi. I loved those shots of the Deltic. The sound was incredible. I’m doing a model rail video on the Deltic soon and was looking for some clips of it to use in with my video. If I credited you with these clips would I be able to use some of them in my video? Check my channel out and I’d appreciate it if you could get back to me. Cheers. Dave

    I know arm flailing on diesel tours is traditional but can someone from back in the day when it began explain why it started to be done in the first place? (I'm not commenting on safety)
