This great Monkees song was originally done with ONLY Micky & Peter. Davy did NOT want to put a New song on a Greatest Hits album. EVERYTIME they did this in concert Davy would leave the stage. I'm glad he finally stayed for this one.
The reason Davy did not sing on the song is he felt Arista did not offer the band enough money to record the new songs. He says it in the Behind the Music documentary. The others were ok with what Arista offered.
MICKY'S got the most incredible voice! It lasts still today. I cried watching this....less than year and our Davy was gone. I love them all. 1966 was the best year ever because the MONKEES became a part of my life forever i
This song hooked me hard on the Monkees in 1986 !! The Monkees were back and on MTV and back "on Tour". It was a great "Comeback". I'm glad someone got footage of the last stage performances of the guys in 2011. I am still wondering why that tour, got cut short? And rumor has it, they planned to tour again in June 2012.
Micky has one of the most iconic voices of the 60s yet when he describes himself he never mentions vocalist lol. These guys were always so humble and cool. Also so talented comedically. Glad they've remained beloved for the duration of all of their lives. They brought a lot of laughter and fun and joy to people all over the world.
RIP Davy Jones !! I saw the big reunion show in 1987. It was good to see them perform. Lots of fun memories. I enjoyed the television show too as a kid. I would race home to watch it every day.
I don't care what anybody says - they still have a lot of talent. (RIP Davy) I've seen Micky twice now once last year with he and Peter and once for his solo in NYC this year - he is still phenomenal. He still has an amazing voice and talent. Yes the man is 72 years old - but he still loves performing and good on him! Their album they put out last year for their 50th was awesome. keep going boys you're amazing. :)
Tonight i watched a special on KET, music of the 60's. Davy hosted a portion of it. Made me feel very nostalgic, and sad in a way.l grew up to these bands. I am in my early 50's, and it feels so strange seeing some of the old bands, and watching them pass on one by one. the singers and bands i listened to are in their late 60's and early 70's, yet you close your eyes and find yourself reliving our childhoods. RIP Davy, and all the rest
I wish they would come to m area. I LOVED The Monkees when I was a kid & still do. Nice that Davy will sing along with this song. For a long time, he would walk offstage.
Seeing Davy and Peter horsing around brings back many fond memories of sitting in front of my TV back in 67, 68, and 69 with my Monkees lunchbox, my Monkee bubblegum cards, my model Monkee Mobile, and all my Monkee magazines watching them on TV. I miss those grand ole' days so very much. Being old now and seeing the crazy, looney ways of the world today adds to the sadness of knowing Davy and Peter are gone from this world. THe Monkees played a big part of my childhood and were a great inspiration for me to keep playing music. May they always rest in heavenly peace!!!
Twelve years ago. We'd lose one a year from now. The other two a decade on. I wish we could all go back. I remember watching the show on TV reruns with my grandmother, herself gone on more than a decade ago. Her sticky buns and meatloaf, the quiet jangling of old pop coming from the console tv. Her stern "now you've done it" for minor infractions that she'd over inflate in the most reassuring way for a child. I miss you grandma. I miss you, me as a child. I wish the world had turned out better.
That was a fun song. It's kind of hard to listen to it live, but I would have loved to have been there just so I could be in the same room with them. I love those guys
I loved the Monkees.. I was in the Monkee Club as a kid..looked forward to every episode of their fun TV show..Davy Jones was my very first band member crush..this is so beyond sad news..RIP sweet Davy xox
@MsYardage I'm a 2nd generation fan (huge fan from 1986 on) and I remember that Monkee Marathon from MTV because I also taped every single episode - CUTTING OUT ALL THE COMMERCIALS too! That was tough staying up 24 hours straight, ha ha. I still have those tapes and I even watched them all again just a few months ago! Now I'm "into" them again and can hardly believe that one of them is gone now!
Davy didn't walk off the stage I see. From what I've heard, he generally walked off the stage when the 1986 Monkees songs were performed and walked back on when they were finished.
This was nice. It's always interesting to hear someone who wasn't on the original studio recording. Many Monkee songs didn't feature all the members. Notable exceptions were Headquarters and PACJ. I thought some of Paul Simon's solo hits sounded better when Art Garfunkel joined him at Central Park. Have they ever done this song with Mike? Could you imagine having him and Peter on the DJBH songs? They redid You and I on JustUs. If life was fair, then Davy, my dad, and so many other people would still be with us!
Oh yes, interesting. I love where you went with this. Thank you for sharing! We were blessed to have had The Monkees presents The Mike & Micky Show tour finish as it did in 2021 before Mike's passing.
Love Peter's red shirt. Can't help but wonder if he still wears mismatched socks. I'm glad they're (were) still having fun. They'll always be our four insane boys. Monkee Magic will always be alive and well.
I was at this show. It was great!! I saw them in '86 (when I was single) and '96 (when the oldest was 5). This time my kids were old enough to go with me. Ahh, but the Monkees make me feel young so I can handle it!!
On UA-cam, check out the video of Davy singing the words to a really cute children's book called "Your Personal Penguin" written by Sandra Boynton. Davy does a beautiful job on the very cute little book. There is another video on UA-cam of Davy recording the book in the studio. You get to see Davy as Davy...lots of fun!
@Beatlesonlyblog I am in the same exact age boat as you! We used to watch the Monkees in reruns in the 70's, we had their albums and 8 tracks! Do you remember the weekend that MTV re ran the whole series I think that was in '85 - I was home sick with the flu and my older brother asked me to tape it for him! Ah, those were the days! I hope they come back to Merrillville again, we are right around the corner now!
I was there!!! 😀✌️Unfortunate however, they recently permanently closed the Star Theatre where they are performing. Makes no sense to me. Great place to see a show!
Steve Hammond *** it wasnt that mike was a snob he did show up for a few shows. The main reason when he left the monkees he wanted to buy out his contract. They didnt give him what he asked for and got under half what he made.
Steve, Mike didn't join them for the whole tour for the simple reason...and if any of you are REAL Monkee fans, you'd know this...he was too busy with what he has going on since the Monkees ended. He runs a huge production company and couldn't just say, well, yeah, I'll walk away from all of this for however many months the tour takes. But he has joined the others, several times
That was when and this in now. Ive made a lot of kids, and I look like a cow. I don't come round, but that's the way. I have to live my life, I don't care if I stray. They promote sexual urges in young girls, but not here to stay.
If there ever was a song that was a 'Monkees Only' song, this is it.!

We'll never have "The Monkees" again... :-(
Long live the 60s music
So glad I was there!!
R.I.P. David Thomas "Davy" Jones (30 December 1945 - 29 February 2012)
Thank you for the Music and Great Memories!
Also, RIP Peter Halsten Thorkelston (a/k/a Peter Tork) (born February 13, 1942 - passed away February 21, 2019) 🙏
RIP Davy Jones !! I saw the big reunion show in 1987. It was good to see them perform. Lots of fun memories. I enjoyed the television show too as a kid. I would race home to watch it every day.
I grew up watching the Monkees in the 60's and I regret I never saw them live. Now it is too late. RIP Davey

I love how the Monkees always kept giving back to their fans. They are timeless treasures.
What a fun song. Loved the pictures of when they were young.
Geriatric rock 'n roll at it's best. Congratulations for hanging in there with us, guys.

Peter & Davy at 0:23-0:41!!!!Davy's face is priceless......lolololol.

Heck, I like this better than the studio recording! Micky's vocal sounds more expressive here than it did twenty-five years ago! ^_^
I loved the Monkees.. I was in the Monkee Club as a kid..looked forward to every episode of their fun TV show..Davy Jones was my very first band member crush..this is so beyond sad news..RIP sweet Davy xox
Makes me feel young...or should I say younger!!!
Seen them back in 86.....Awsome concert!!! Love the music.
Thank you so much !!
I saw them do this song at there 1986 20th Anniversary Tour in Elmira, NY what a great time it was to hear this live. RIP Davy, Peter, and Mike.

Only on that 86 tour. He grew up and got over it.
@@thefonzkiss Ah, that explains it.
Ill still go see mickey and peter
Oh my gosh-- Peter's shirt

I love The Monkees since the 60s when they were on TV from 1966 to 1968 ! Had a huge crush on Davy summer of 67 age 11 I was ! RIP Davy and Peter !
Used to watch them on tv ! Where have the years gone !
Love Peter's red shirt. Can't help but wonder if he still wears mismatched socks.
I'm glad they're (were) still having fun. They'll always be our four insane boys. Monkee Magic will always be alive and well.
Amen
Well he dead. So I don’t think he’s wearing any shirts
I was at this show. It was great!! I saw them in '86 (when I was single) and '96 (when the oldest was 5). This time my kids were old enough to go with me. Ahh, but the Monkees make me feel young so I can handle it!!
I was hooked when I first them

Krenkel is right, great memories.
Omg this happen 8 years ago ...hate to see then now 2019
2:11 in his youth :(
Had Mike Nesmith not been such a snob all 4 of them could have been back together before Davey passed away.
The kind of girl I could love me::
Kind of girl I COuld love
Steve Hammond *** it wasnt that mike was a snob he did show up for a few shows. The main reason when he left the monkees he wanted to buy out his contract. They didnt give him what he asked for and got under half what he made.
+Steve What do you really know about it? You're obviously not even a real Monkees fan if you can't even spell Davy's name correctly.
Steve, Mike didn't join them for the whole tour for the simple reason...and if any of you are REAL Monkee fans, you'd know this...he was too busy with what he has going on since the Monkees ended. All 4 Monkees did a tour and made the Justus album in 1996.
When you sing like Davy and Micky, you don't need to play the guitar or the drums
Micky's hat looks like a thimble.
When did Mickey turn into James Cagney?
After many years Davy wanted to use that tamborine as a weapon.
The Monkees and The Partridge Family, the best bands that never were!
