I hope your power will be restored soon. Glad you are safe. Very good advice on appliance placement. I love having my oven and my range top split up. I would also highly recommend venting to the outside. Whatever it costs, it is worth it in my opinion.
When it comes to placement of appliances I found it function over fashion is the best rule, for me it’s fridge, counter space ,sink, counter space, range ,oven, counter space.
I dont have any of this in my rental. I have 2 foot of counter soace either side of the sink and the cooker at the end so nowhere to out a pot ..the laundry is at one side of the sink so its got the laundry stuff. On the counter because theres nowhere else to put plates. And the plugs are miles away beside an old stove nobody uses except to keep my grill pans ...I have a dresser for a pantry for food and barely fits enough for 2 weeks basic foods. Then theres a window and a door and a moldy wall that always sweats cos next door has a fire there. The dresser is in front of that beside the plugs. ... theres extension leads and extension leads to put the fridge on the inside wall the only wall...and that wall has thr radiator!@@@ so everything in front of radiator is aweful. But what to do? Its a mess. So badly designed and just depresssing as hell.no matter how i arrange things its so hard to manage walking up and down and nowhere to put down a hot pot or pan.
Totally agree about, HELLO, I do snow! What the heck is this?!? So not cool, hurricanes. 👎👎. But, I am wholeheartedly thankful you and your family are well. Thanks for the great tips on this video! Stay safe.
So glad you all are unharmed. I lived for years as a kid in Mississippi and South Georgia, so hurricanes I’m used to. These days, in Tennessee, it’s tornados - not a fan!
I was in Clarke county MS for Camille, TS Alberto 1994 rained itself out over Atlanta Hartsfield airport(17 inches of rain in less than 24 hours) and all the residents downstream on the Flint River could do was watch the water come. I was in Tennessee for the tornado super-outbreak of 1-4 April, 1974, and don't even ask why I spent the winter of 2009 under a blue tarp because of a tree falling on the house.
Thank you for this valuable information on appliance placement. One thing I've read in several different articles about dishwashers is that if you are right handed the dishwasher should be placed on the left of the sink and left handed people feel more comfortable with it being on the right. I looked into this only because my husband wants to put it on the right in our new kitchen remodel but it interferes with a walkway into the kitchen which is one of several reasons why it shouldn't be on the right in my new kitchen. Thanks for all the inspiration in your videos as I am about to embark on a new kitchen remodel.
I've heard that theory too. I don't buy it. We are all right handed and our dishwasher is on the left. There has never been an issue with it. My previous kitchen had it on the right. That was fine too. Blocking your walkway is more important to consider then whether it's on the right or left. I'm triggered lol
@@MTKDofficial I suppose that makes more sense that if you are blocking a walkway that's a reason not to have it on the right side in my particular kitchen. I guess it's probably force of habit but I have heard that in several places like Better Homes and Gardens and other kitchen designers, etc. Thanks for your input. My husband will be happy to hear your take on it.
When placing a wall oven next to a refrigerator do watch the clearances that the fridge does not hit the oven handles when opening. Spacers may be required, better yet a Pantry between the units
Thanks for this. I have a tiny kitchen with all the appliances against one wall. The house was built in the 40s and doesn't have space for reconfiguring. Not ideal, but my stove and fridge have to be side by side. I am upgrading appliances and was worried about this being an issue with a newer stove that might operate at a higher rate of heat.
Good channel - plus it's Canadian so will apply to our national codes; provincial codes notwithstanding. I have trouble seeing the panel on a microwave that is placed beneath the counter. I like that they're out of the way when placed there, but just not functional for eyes that are...shall I say...aging 😊 Same goes for oven placement - in the wall - I had one in my early-mid twenties and still my favourite location.
if you look how it should be in vintage default as its most convenient way. if its on single wall (stove, sink, fridge or fridge, sink, stove) same must be used with island. its the way you move. but beck than owen was under stove and sink was used for food work now also and for dishes, but now sink is not used for dishes. dishwasher came it must be between stove an fridge and owen can be anywhere now mostly advice to use lifted in cabinet and stove buy cooktop dirt and greece gone with cooktopas no gaps left like stove. try moving stove and you will find grease and food in those gaps. but we must look at standart in placing which is stove, sink ,fridge.
I really don't think the kitchen triangle concept goes far enough. We have the fridge-stove-sink: you store food, you cook food, you wash the dishes. But what about the food stored in the pantry? What about the food cooked in the oven, or in the sandwich press, or in the rice cooker, or in the air fryer? What about the dishes needing to be scraped into the bin, and what if you're washing them in the dishwasher? We need to take this concept from the 1950s and expand it to handle today's realities. Like kitchens themselves, ideas about kitchens need renovation from time to time.
I don't have the extra space for a separate wall oven and cooktop, but I'm getting too less-than-limber to bend down for the oven. By shuffling some storage and placing the warming drawer under the cooktop and splitting the level of the countertop so the oven will be under a 48-inch-high countertop at the end of the cabinet run on the end away from the fridge (I have a dog-trop-type galley) I solve that problem. The toaster-oven, can opener, and other small electrics can go on the high counter.
Apparently ventilation around a fridge standing next to oven is different from ventilation around the fridge standing away from oven. Have you seen any number showing that a fridge located next to oven would work with the same efficiency as fridge standing away from oven?
I haven't seen any data for that, but it's not something I looked for either. I imagine the manufacturers would provide some efficiency numbers depending on installation type.
Yeah those two appliances are so frequently used that they beg to be left on the counter. But then it can look cluttered or take up valuable space on the surface. I feel you. I keep my coffee maker out and my toaster in a wall cabinet.
Don't put the fridge next to the oven or microwave that swings outward or you will eventually end up with a gash in your fridge stainless door-panel like i had in my house was when I moved in

Glad you guys are safe! First thing that goes when disaster strikes, is definitely convenience.

Hurricane in Canada, totally crazy for sure! Glad to hear you are safe and only lost power. Great tips for the appliances!

Great video on appliances thank you for taking the time to do that during this upheaval. Praying you & your family.
Wonderful to see your on video this week. So glad you are all safe. We just survived Cat 5 hurricane Ian--so I can empathize. Stay safe!
I’ll echo everyone else and express my gratitude that and your family are safe. I hope you and your neighbors are able to recover soon.
Greetings from the other hurricane 🌀. Glad you’re safe and prepared with camping gear!
Thanks Liz! Hope all is well on your end!

Yay‼️🌸 You and your family doing great. Have you heard of Danby freezerless fridge? Have best weekend you are able to have. Hope Gammy is ok too💐💐💐
Omgosh, I hope all is well after the storm Mark.
Glad to know you are all safe and back to kitchen design amid the hurricane recovery.
Glad you are okay…
Yo slick! Glad you and family are safe. I’m sure if you had a Over the range mircowave all would be be good

Same goes for oven placement - in the wall - I had one in my early-mid twenties and still my favourite location.
Really surprised to hear that it’s not an issue to place ovens directly next to a fridge!
Good to see you're safe. Isn't a blizzard just a cold hurricane? 🤣

Thanks for the video. I have been wondering how you and your family fared in the hurricane. Glad Ian didn't come your way as well
Two thoughts: #1 PLAN where you will put your kitchen garbage. #2 Optimize view from sink--under a window is ideal.
Then you need to clean the window every day.

I love hearing how people make the best function out of their spaces! Cool.
Great advice. Practical.

Can you please look into Misen En Place , a French term means being prepared by having everything in it’s place) for full function
Cool. That sounds like a great topic to explore. Thank you!
Great video. Im struggling on where to put my coffee machine and toaster. I have large kitchen
Yeah those two appliances are so frequently used that they beg to be left on the counter. But then it can look cluttered or take up valuable space on the surface. I feel you. I keep my coffee maker out and my toaster in a wall cabinet.
It is an issue for me too. To keep a coffee machine out if two people use it at least five times a day is not a workable solution.
Put a dishwasher next to the sink?
Put it next to a cabinet for your plates and cutlery.
Microwave ...I like it as a vent.. is that so wrong?
Yes!! Hahah. Kidding.
This sucks. Not the video, but that a nice guy like you has to go through this with your family. Hope this is a distant memory soon
Don't put the fridge next to the oven or microwave that swings outward or you will eventually end up with a gash in your fridge stainless door-panel like i had in my house was when I moved in
