How has the complete social reaction changed towards Conchita over the course of just 6 years! Even if eurovision was dubbed as a lgbt shrine for years, the effect of a bearded lady/drag queen was like a bomb dropping. Everyone was confused, unsure, disturbed. And just in 6 years, these lovely ladies watching her for the first time didn't even flinch at her appearance. I love it! Honestly, Conchita walked in 2014 so that every gender non-conforming individual in europe could run!
Your comment almost brought me to tears, you are so right! We are seeing a lot of hate towards minorities from certain groups of people nowadays but it's important to be aware also of the advances that we have accomplished in our societies. We have reasons to be proud, too.
The Same happen with Dana International that did recieved a worst backlash from the conservative people. Even Eurovision kinda turn "their" back to her. Dana didnt had the social support that Conchita did. Thats the beauty in Eurovision. One year people hate x or y and next year is praised.
It is of all times. Dana International was actually more accepted than Conchita. I think it's because before the 2014 festival started, the media was already talking about 'the bearded lady' for weeks and how 'shocking' it was. Funny thing is, it was the media making the most noise and basically setting the tone and the sheeple followed suit. There have been dragqueens before? When Dana International performed, there was some controversy but media wasn't everywhere telling you what to think 24/7. there was no internet and no mobile devices to constantly update you on media-opinions. People made up their own minds and how many people DID NOT know Dana was trans until after the festival. There is genuine outrage and then there is outrage spun by the media. I really did'nt get all the fuss. But how easy was it for the media to tell people a 'fuss was being made' over Conchita.
True words. The masses of haters/trolls Conchita respectively Tom Neuwirth had to deal with before and also quite a time after his Eurovision victory - political & also on social media - fortunately have 'disappeared'. Further more and mostly important lots of countries have implemented equality laws for LGBTIQ+ people since then.
You are so right, I just watched this and I also noticed that. Have to say that is also due to the 2 lovely ladies too, but wow.... It was noticed and accepted in a split second. Love to the beautiful ladies!
I'm from East Germany. This was the very first and last time I EVER call-voted in any contest. Ever! My son and I sat in front of the TV, with fake beards, cheering for Conchita, because she was what ppl needed to seeand hear!
I still get goosebumps from this performance. It was so good, I was rooting (and voting) for Conchita.

i did a reaction video to this song and the official music video with my friends from college, and i still have it in my hard drive, i never upload it thinking it would fail and got dislikes because 2014 reaction was not really a thing in Indonesia until recent years lol..

People that watched the music video genuinely laughed cause everyone thought it was comedy. The music video let it down big time.
I am hoping the next song will be Turkey 1997, just because of its ethnic flavour, but maybe he chose Dum Tek Tek or Everyway that I can.
I believe Conchita deserved win that year...Purely amazing winner in my opinion...

I used to really dislike this song and thought Conchita undeservedly won, just because of her - admittedly powerful - gender non-conforming attire. But having heard it more often, I like it. Still not my favorite of that year, but it's definetly not won *without* deserving it.

Typically American :-) Apart from Tom being a pretty good singer, this was also a political decision at a time when Russia got gays into prison, and other East-European countries refused to participate because of Conchita. It was a mix of show and awareness of other issues. I voted for him, though I am straight.

Here in Ireland at least we sent a turkey to represent us in eurovision. The whole thing is a joke and should be seen that way.
That was in 2008. Eurovision has long moved away from that kind of silliness.
