You have to know the background of Conchita. I saw Thomas Neuwirth first in an austrian competition - very young, very intelligent and also very cute with an unbelievable very good trained voice. I was fascinated by his ability to perform. In this show he outet himself as gay - in that days it was not the best for his career.
After the show, Thomas said in an interview nobody took him serious, because he was so small, young and nice and gay. So he said: When you reduce me to such things and don’t hear my talent - I give you what you want. And so „Conchita“ the Drag was born. He mentioned also now I can wear High heals to be tall as wanted.

this is a drag performance, so the character Conchita goes by female pronouns while the performer, Thomas Neuwirth, uses male pronouns. I think the whole "bearded lady" aesthetic was a bigger, more shocking, deal /outside/ of Eurovision fan circles. she definitely won that year because the song and the performance were great and incredibly moving. I do remember that it brought me to tears a bunch of times.

Great song though I disliked it at first cause my favourite song in Eurovision 2014 was Netherlands(Holland) was runner up and wanted it to win. But now I think this song is one of the best winning song and performances in Eurovision history.
