Just a thought, for years now I have hung my kilts like this. Take 2 sticks slightly longer than the kilts widest waist, by about 2 inches. The hardwood sticks are 1 1/4 inches by 1/4 in. thick. Lay the kilt so the loops are along each side, and slide the sticks until the kilt hangs by them and side by side. Mark that spot on each end, and just past that drill two small holes big enough to pass a "bungee cord" stretchy hold down through the holes. Hang the kilt and the stretchy cord will be easy to find the center point, I make a loop at that point, and add a coat hanger to hang it up. A bit stretchy, but the kilt loops hold the shape straight, just like a stiff belt would and the stretchy cord allows the weight to be even across the waist through the loops. Going on 10 years or more without a drop or wrinkle, just use a good strong wood, and maybe a piece of clear packing tape to keep the wood edges smoothed out. Any comments are welcome, for a great web site, many thanks !
I make Victorian gowns and because of the weight I fold and hang them across several hangers in order to relieve the fabric of the weight. Because some of the skirts are trained they can be very long and heavy so for short term this works well; for long term however folding is recommended (by me anyway). I also work with the textiles in our museum and we put acid-free tissue paper between the folds of the clothing or quilts or ? so the fabric isn’t rubbing together and lay them flat in acid-free storage boxes. Just a thought.
I just received my four yard box pleated kilt that has the loops and the kilt maker explained to me that in the regiments the kilt was folded so the two loops came together and the kilt was then hung on a hook or peg on the barrack wall . I have five other kilts from a different maker and they put loops on four and five yard but not eight yard kilts ( because of the weight I presume . ) I don't use the loops myself unless as Rocky stated for hanging the kilt in a public washroom . Lastly the question at 4:15 about an eight yard kilt falling off the hanger while traveling I have a kilt roll to carry an extra kilt with me . Most places sell kilt rolls and are a safer and handier way to carry kilts .
I Roll my 9yd Kilt ( made by Scotts of Dundee) when I have no room to hang it up. But also transport it rolled up, inside one leg of a ladies tights (donated by my Bonny wee Wife). It works well & stops me having to Iron it when I finally arrive after an extended travel trip as it fits in my luggage easily. I got this tip from a retired highland regiment soldier in Edinborough!
Long ago as a highlander with a 34" waist I used the loops with no ill effect. Barracks do not necessarily give you a place to lay out you kilt when not wearing it. Mind you, I was constantly ironing, delinting, and polishing on a daily basis. My kilt was pressed at least every three to five days, more often if any of the pleats or the apron got wrinkled or creased. As an old fart with a 52" waist, I wish my kilt had 5 loops... one inside each apron and one in the back. I still use the side loops (on a modified hanger) which I supplement with three clips that grip the kilt in the middle. I have promised myself a new kilt once I have lost some more weight. Since I probably won't get all the way back to my 20 year old size, I might request extra loops be added.
Although I have a smaller frame than you ( I had a 28" waist until I was 30ish ) and was up to 36 1/2" by the time I turned 60 ) kilt wearing was the incentive to loose some of the spare tire . Just by not eating chips and junk food and cutting pop from my consumption plus walking ( not strolling ) when I can has reduced my waist by 3 1/2" in 8 months . I can't and don't want to get back to my 20's size getting down to 32" is my goal . These sizes are relative to my frame size of course and will be different for everyone . I think it is great that it was this garment alone that pushed me to get in shape .
I am trying to slim down a bit myself before I buy another 8 yard kilt. My first one from high school has not fit me in 25 hears, but I still have it hanging in my closet.😀👍 Trying to decide if I should sell it, or "invest" in having it rebuilt to fit. I still have the original order papers somewhere.
I prefer a Kilt Hanger...it’s a little different from the one you sell and discussed. It consists of two ruler type pieces of wood aprox. 14” long that clamp together via hanger mechanism. One side slides through kilt’s loops in back (sporran loops) and the other side clamps on other side of kilt. Works beautifully, kilt never falls off hangar and it maintains the pleats perfectly.
If I've had a long hot performance and the inside of my kilt is a little damp, I'll hang it open over the back of a chair till it has dried out. Then I'll fold it in 3rds and hang it on a kilt hanger. They're great too, btw, gentlemen! Thank you so much!
I have bad hearing and the sound on this video isn't as loud as some, so I heard "Kilts & Culture" as "Celtic Culture" and couldn't find the group on Facebook. After poking around your Facebook page, I looked at the events tab and found it though. Thanks!
I wore a kilt on a weekly basis in college as part of a pipe band. During the week I used the loops to hang my kilt, as did the rest of the pipe band members. However, we kept all of our clothes hangars 2 fingers apart, so the kilt was more or less supported on either side and wasn't able to sag in the middle. Once I get my kilt from USA Kilts in the next couple months though, it'll be on a proper kilt hangar as the usage will likely not be quite as high.
I have a hanger with the cut outs and clips. So I hang mine by the loops and then clip it. Had it 10 years and still looks good! FYI mines only a 30-32" waist. So not very wide when hanging.
I use 4 skirt hangers with rubber coated clips for hang drying my utility kilts, only because I haven’t purchased any USA Kilts kilts or kilt hangers yet. Give me time! Need to drive from Jersey for an in person visit and sizing once I have money to order a quality kilt (e.g. your guys’!)
I have had my kilt for over 15 years I use the loops on the hanger. & I use clothes pegs on the waste to keep it together to stop the sagging. And I have had no problems with my kilt.
I use clamp hangers that are normally used to hang trousers from the leg to hang my kilts. They are a bit short for the width of my kilt, but they work well. I also put the one side of the clamp through the belt loops on the back of the kilts so they won't completely fall off if they somehow slide out of the hanger.
I hang my kilts on hangers with 2 clips for the util kilts and 4 clips for trad kilts. Only the trad kilts seem to have the loops which I cut off as they are useless for hanging and just get in the way.
Addendum: I hang the kilt in a W formation to maximize airflow in limited space and to keep the pleats hanging fairly evenly during drying. More a cotton utility kilt concern, I suppose.
Full width wooden bar hanger that clamps down on it. A nightmare to find, so end up making my own sometimes. Would be great if I didn't have to (as is a pain) and someone made a really good one.
Since you are wearing what looks to be a MacLeod of Harris kilt, may I ask.....is that tartan actually affiliated with that branch and Lewis with Lewis or is the only difference that one is hunting and one is dress?
That method is also recommended by another kiltmaker in Canada, former Canadian army. I think he mentions in his videos that is the traditional method, after laying your kilt out to airdry overnight(?).

I bought a couple of your hangers for my kilts and love them! They work great and keep the kilts supported and looking good.

I have two kilts with the hanger loops but I have never used them because I use my USA Kilts, kilt hangers.😀 Cheers guys!

Hey Guys love the show, just wondering if your going to give us an update on the expansion of you building? like to know how it is going?. Cheers
We're doing well with the expansion. We have done a few time lapse videos and updates on our company FB page. :-)
2:05 it is called an Indentation on hanger
I hang my kilts on hangers with 2 clips for the util kilts and 4 clips for trad kilts. Only the trad kilts seem to have the loops which I cut off as they are useless for hanging and just get in the way.
I use the "clambshell" type hangers that are used for hanging dress slacks.
Addendum: I hang the kilt in a W formation to maximize airflow in limited space and to keep the pleats hanging fairly evenly during drying. More a cotton utility kilt concern, I suppose.

Did y'all start putting those loops in yours? The kilt I just bought from you had them! Why the switch?

What's that kilt group name again? You said it so fast I couldn't understand it, thanks
It's called Kilts & Culture: facebook.com/groups/1524245444285602/?ref=bookmarks
My Kilt has no hanging loops after airing my kilt I roll it length wise and store it this way, my last kilt survived 40 years using this method
That method is also recommended by another kiltmaker in Canada, former Canadian army. I think he mentions in his videos that is the traditional method, after laying your kilt out to airdry overnight(?).
no matter what question I have, there is a USA Kilts video about it
My best friend has buttons on the inside of his great grandfathers kilt. Are those for suspenders? PS it’s a military WWI kilt.
I use hangers that has two long bars pressed together.
I can say from owning an 8 yard kilt in 16 oz fabric that this is indeed a problem even with your wonderully designed kilt hangers
Hanging loops? Oops... I use them to support my sporran chain on the sides under my belt. My bad (but they work great).
I have used those loops.
I have also ruined a number of plastic hangers. 🤣
What is that kilt group name please. You said it kinda fast lol
the FB group is called: Kilts & Culture - facebook.com/groups/kiltsandculture
2 of my kilts have those loops, I still put them on the handsome USA Kilts hangers.
You can get one too, at usakilts.com!
I lay mine flat in a draw - not hung. Yes the draw is wide.

Does the guy on the left have any relation to George Clooney?
No, but thank you for asking! HAHAHA
