Irish kilts are a bit newer - around the turn of the 20th century and began with solid colors: saffron, blue, green and I think one other. Some family tartans came along later. In the mid 1990s, county tartans were woven by one mill to go with the tartan craze after Braveheart.
I came here to know about the kilts and their significance to the Scottish. I am an Indian and this kilt reminds me of dhoti that men in our culture wear traditionally

The tartans were originally, regional, because of the colors available, from LOCAL dye plants. NOTHING OF CLANS, EXCEPT LOCATION

Good overview. Earliest know tartan was found in China, but a Roman statue has a slave wearing a tartan-like mosaic clothing.

No you are wrong. They weren't introduced as they are seen today until the 18th century but a variation of that existed prior.
