We rented RVs for YEARS (we are in Canada, large RV rental companies aimed at the European market are common here). With one exception, every single time we rented from large, established companies with pristine vehicles. The biggest pro with renting is that when we were able to purchase our own RV, we knew exactly what floorplan we wanted, what brands we were not interested in, etc. Also once we purchased, we had almost no extra items to buy (having purchased them over the years of renting). Having said that, no way are we renting out (or even loaning to friends) our 2020 rig! We refer people to the local rental company that we developed a good relationship over the years. :)

Great tips as usual. Especially for first timers, "try before you buy".
Last October we decided to upgrade from our camper that we had used for the past 25 years and bought a used 1year old pristine class C with only 7K miles on it. The couple that bought it new were first timers and quickly found that this was not what they needed and traded it in. They probably lost close to $15K on the deal and we saved about $20k (over buying new). So for newbies LOTS of homework and try before you buy will help insure that you buy your second RV first!

I am currently renting an RV from a private owner not through RV share. Maybe my situation is an exception to the rule but we have had a wonderful experience. Repairs have been completed in a timely manner. Payments are made in cash with me getting a receipt every time. Great tips! But remember it doesn't apply to everyone.

As an rv tech, one of the things i frequently hear when someone buys a motorhome is: it is old but it doesnt have many miles. So i just listen but always am reminded of the saying "what u dont use, u lose." In saying that, i feel that people who rent out their rv are actually benefitting ther "baby.. ie. A rv frig has an ant-rust inhibitor in the cooling unit, but the frig (called a refer in rv tech talk) needs to b on for the substance to coat the tubes in the cooling unit fior it to b effective. When i was doing walk thrus w people who just bought there rv's, i wud recommend the to run their refer for 24 hrs if they were string it for a long period of time

The Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace are still good options and you can save 40%. I rent on all the platforms. The networks are the same to RV owners as IUber/Lyft is to drivers. Owners can provide rental insurance, process payments, 24:7 roadside for way less. 35% (25 for owners and 10 for renters) is quite a finders fee.

Hi guys! Another week, another message!... thank you for providing this very valuable information to your subscribers. Even though we won’t EVER rent-out our “Lucy” (2016 Navion M), you have given many people very good advice. Be careful, as there are scammers out there just waiting to take advantage of those who want to try-out RVing prior to buying. Your renter did you a great favor in labeling all the switches (I’m STILL learning some of ours!), and John, you were very smart in videoing your walk through with him! Unfortunately, there are scammers out there at every turn, and you two have just made it a lot easier for those who are just beginning the rv life. Thanks again for your kind advice...it can be used for other things in our lives, too! Love ya guys!, Virginia (give Sage a hug from me!)

Very good advice to be leery about a rental unit with zero reviews. Be extra cautious. We were looking at a Monaco Class A in the Flagstaff area that was priced very reasonably on RV Share. But as I studied the photos on the listing I noticed there were three different rigs shown, including one that had a tag axle. That was a definite sign that something wasn't right. I tried to contact the owner through the RV Share site and never got a response, so I pointed out the discrepancies directly to RV Share. The listing quickly disappeared. If the owner doesn't answer you questions in a timely manner, move along to a different rig. Also be aware of the "mandatory" insurance charge most of the rv rental sites charge. They can be enormous, so be prepared.

I not its a corporation but what are your thoughts on them. Rented a Class C for a 2 week trip out west, found it was too small for longer trips, but hard to go exploring. Now we are planning a short trip in a Class A, but will be able to wander very far w/o another vehicle. Van would be way too small for wifey and dog!

I rented a small Class C last August for my birthday. Had great reviews but the floor was sagging and smelled like urine. I'm a germaphobe like John and cleaned the whole RV top to bottom. AC barely worked and was very hot. I realized that I wasn't going to get the true feeling by renting. That's just me and didn't want any more bad rental experiences to turn me off to RVing. So, my husband and I just purchased a 2021 Rockwood Mini Lite 2204s with twin beds and theatre seating instead of dinette. A good size to start with to see how we like the RV life. If we don't, we will sell. If we do, will trade and upgrade with more room to take the grandkids. Love your videos and have things in my Amazon cart from your Amazon store. Have watch many of your videos for the 2nd time😊 Take care and stay safe!

I will allow the person some time to clean the property up and as long as they keep the property clean and pay the taxes every year which is about 125 a year and the road is pave is this a good idea?
A well is on the property plus city water is possible there is a septic tank but it kinda OLD meaning haven't be used in 20 years. The reason why I want to do is because i live out of state and the person be doing me a favor property is South Carolina

I've rented from RV Share in the past, and the only issue I had was even Qualifying to use there service. They wanted a picture of both sides of my license, a copy of my passport. I do not have a smart phone and do not even own a camera so that was a pain. Once I got past that the renter was great and got back to me ASAP with any questions I had. Without asking she gave me a discount because I was renting it for a week. She had no clue how much gas was in the tanks and said just send me the receipt if you need to fill them up, and she did.
I found out the trailer was full of roaches (it was rented in FL) She then sent me more money back because of the issue.

We tried hard to rent a travel trailer before we bought ours last year, but the owners provided almost no answers or information related to towing. I could find weight info, but was trying to get info on hitch heights so I could make sure I had correct shanks. I got answers like “regular” or “normal” draws. I also found the owners of the specific trailers I was trying to rent before a purchase decision to be completely unresponsive to availability questions. It was an equally disappointing experience on RV Share and Outdoorsy. I gave up and went ahead and decided between the two trailers I was considering. I suspect the trailer rental market has a few more wrinkles than a class c, for example.

    Very helpful video! Thank you!
We’re looking into renting from RVShare, could you expound on what it means when the rv owner writes something like, “75 miles per night included with rental for free”? What does this mean? Does that mean, as renters we would only be able to drive the rv 75miles a day, and anything over that 75 we will be charged extra?
And I’m assuming the same would be true for the a generator time? So if they write, “3 hours per night generator usage included with rental for free.” We can only run the generator for 3hours a night?
Sorry for all the questions. ☺️ Just looking for some help.

Hi David :) Sounds like an amazing trip for you! I understand your concern because I think about the same thing as we plan a trip in another Country. Scary proposition? Yup, but theres no fun without a little risk :))) Hope we cross paths when you hit the States

We drove cars in NZ & the UK (no RV). What helped us drive on the "wrong side of the road" was that the person NOT driving had to always make sure the driver was in the correct lane, since we always felt like we were driving wrong. Having 2 sets of eyes really helped us drive according to local custom & not USA custom. Hope this helps. Enjoy your visit to America.

Been watching your channel for a little over a year, thanks for all the information that you put out. My question is I'm looking at used campers and I've heard some people on UA-cam say if your campers over 10 years old, some parks will not let you come in. Wondering if you know any thing about this or what type of parks have this type of rules.
    Thanks and be safe.

Great question. We don't personally have experience with this. We've heard that it but we've never seen anyone get denied.

It’s very rare when that happens. There are many great COE parks and state parks where age doesn’t matter. Plus, they are usually much cheaper than an independent park.

daddysmurf180 Hi Guys, So Sorry but I could never rent my Siesta SS class C even if it sat in the driveway for a few months. Just to look out the window and think I'll be on the road again in a week what a feeling knowing that you can take that trip any time you want!

Hey guys, this video was amazing. I have a question, since you mentioned that someone could make a maximum of $40K per year renting out an RV. Obviously, that is the very high side. I am wondering your thought on this. What if someone who looked suspiciously like me were to purchase a new Travel Trailer (Let's say a Forest River Vibe 26BH) for 25 Grand in cash (no financing). Then let's say that this person threw in about 5 grand worth of sort of necessary upgrades like surge protectors. Then let's say that this handsome mo-fo decided to post it as a rental on RVShare. Do you think that this dashing 51 year old could make that money back (after expenses that I am sure will crop up) in say... 2 years? In other words, is targeting 30K in 2 years a realistic goal for this level of travel trailer? Link to this exact RV below.
The reason I ask is because if I were to buy 3 of them (perhaps 3 different models) then I could retire right now and buy the 4th just to tool around in myself. Mine would be the 31ML, of course.
The reason I ask your professional opinion is that I have no chance of getting my wife involved in RVs unless there is a surefire way of making money. She is all about money. Mammon is her king. Jesus is my king. I just want to relax. I could live in a van by the river and be just fine. She wants money. If I can appease her appeal to continue having a better than average income, maybe I can take it easy and drive around and drinking beer. Not at the same time! heheh

I don't know if I would want to risk my investment with others driving my RV. I'm wondering... Does RVShare have the functionality to "review/rate" those customers who are renting rigs? Because the ONLY way I would ever consider this is if I were able to limit my offer to ONLY those who have a history of renting - and have GOOD rating as a renter. This is mostly because I just don't have a lot of faith in a lot of people today. Just as with rental cars, "many people" will treat those vehicles *much more harshly* than they would treat their own. You mentioned renting your RV at a lower rate if you are new and don't have a lot of reviews yet; that's what I was thinking also. Conversely, I think a new renter to the system with no history should probably be willing to rent at a _higher_ rate until they themselves _have received good reviews/ratings_ from rig owners.

We would never rent ours unless we bought an extra for specifically that reason. Renters do receive reviews👍😊

Great advice. The devil 😈 is indeed in the details! We are contemplating renting or perhaps loaning our RV to a health care worker in our area. The platform you recommend looks like the way to go for sure. We bought our 5th wheel with no prior RV experience. John and Mercedes advice of renting what you are looking to buy (sadly too late for us), and giving it a try before you buy would likely have made a difference in what we bought. We thought about it and decided against it due to not having a tow vehicle at the time. We didn’t realize we could’ve asked them to take it to a site nearby. I also felt the cost was not worth it. It would have paid off. Just saying....

Everything you said is very true! We had a great experience ourselves... rented a Travato KL to see if we liked Class B's and the RV lifestyle (ua-cam.com/video/rJ6-mwm3iHY/v-deo.html).
The renter was very communicative, no scams, walked us through everything, and even lent us his drone to use if we wanted.
Renting was a bit expensive for our tastes, but if you really want to get away, it is the best option.
    Be seeing you!
