It's ironic that none of the voice actors are French, only Japanese. Video games in French usually stay true to the Japanese script in terms of dialogue. It's interesting that the Japanese people are speaking French in this game. Normally a game with French dialogue are voiced by French actors, so it's nice how the Japanese actors are doing the French acting in this game.
What's cool is for the new game in the series that's coming out this year, CC2 held a twitter poll people to decide if they should use French VAs or stick with Japanese speaking French, and the latter got the most votes.
Hey-- I like Opera too, but mainly because of how her personality changes throughout the game. She's just like "Alright, yeah, screw those losers. I'm gonna hang out with you guys now." Sometimes coming to even save you multiple times :P

A hearty salut from the future! Fuga came out in 2021 to great reception and it's got a sequel slated for next month (May 11th, 2023). Speaking of which, Fuga has an option to switch from the default Japanese voice track to a Solatorobo-esque French one (with Adeline Chetail as narrator!), with some characters getting at least two minutes' worth of voice clips. If the (understandably, given the hardware) small number of voice clips in Solatorobo was a gripe for you guys, Fuga makes up for that in abundance- especially since Yoann Gueritot, the game's creative director, is natively French himself and helped with the voice direction. The Berman Empire's enemy tanks predictably also have German names, too- such as Jagdhund, Hornisse, and whatever Hämmerliege is supposed to mean. The bosses' tanks even take their names from Germanic/Norse mythology (Sigurd), folklore (Grobian) or literature (Gretchen). So if Einhänder's constant German didn't burn you guys out… you mind giving Fuga and its sequel a look when the latter comes out? Could be fun.
Tail Concerto was a game I loved a lot as a kid and I'm bummed I probably will never get to play Solatorobo. Just glad Fuga is keeping the series going.
Fun fact: the game only came out in FRANCE when it came to Europe. It was later released in the US, with a slightly different translation and a true english dub (french release is just subbed....... like an anime). Maybe a coincidence, maybe there is some mystical France/Japan connection with these games. Also the french release kept the original opening song WRITTEN FOR THE GAME, while the US version ditched it cause american children must be protected from that foreign menace!
France is a very weeb country (second most consummer of manga/anime behind Japan, and in front of the US, by a large margin), even today, so Japan sees it as a good place to sell anime/mange stuff. Fun fact : Some of the early Dragon Ball fighting games were ALSO only text-translated in french (not even english !) due to heavy popularity of mangas and animes in France early on. US only came way later in the mind of Japan. I'm willing to bet the devs of Solatorobo made the characters speak french for those very reasons.
Tetsuya Kakihara, Red's voice actor, was born in Germany and he speaks both French and German (beside Japanese, of course). He could speak a perfect French but he probably was asked to speak it in a very marked Japanese accent.
When it was still available at Gamestop, I said to myself "This game is going to become rare!". Sadly at that time, my budget for games was lacking and couldn't buy this gem of a game. Now, I have to throw an arm and a leg to get it, unless...Cyber2Connect, re-release this gem digitally!
3 things to say - 1: Holy crap, over 200$ for Solatorobo? That's madness! 2: I bought it at the start of this year for 40€. I'm not kidding, I found the whole package in German Kaufland store 3: Thank you for telling us that they're speaking French, because I was asking myself if the quest vendor was saying "bonjour" or some welcoming gibberish.

Literally my most favourite game of all time. I remember playing this for the first time and reaching the end of the first part after like 15 hours ingame, totally expecting the game to be over. That second part was so good though. Kind of makes you want to forget everything about the game as to experience it for the first time again.
I started the game not that long ago(2 days ago I believe) and finished it today The characters were amazing and I'm starting the second half of the game soon.
Considering that this game has Japanese voice actors speaking French, am I the only one who expects them to make a remastered version and make a Monty Python reference?!
So, I'm still perplexed. Why did the developers use English dubbing in Tail Concerto and French dubbing in Solatorobo: Red the Hunter? Heck, they have promotional screenshots of the game that have the quest sign in plain English. I guess there was a dispute as to the language to be used in-game when recording the voice overs or localization reasons? I don't know for sure. It's hard enough finding a copy of this at all, it's near impossible to find one at reasonable prices. There aren't that many copies as far as I'm aware of, and sellers know that very well.
The great thing about his game is that it is not region-locked. Meaning you could play a European or Japanese version of this game on North American hardware and still have it play normally. However, I bought my complete-in-box for $97 back in 2017. I got lucky. It's well over $130 used on amazon and Ebay now! I'd go with @Switch_Dog and get an R4 card, download the game from a safe rom site, and play it that way if you want to go with the cheaper option. Or get the European version if your serious about owning the physical copy. They typically go from either $30 to $80 on Ebay. True, but Wiimmfi doesn't have the files to unlock the DLC missions that come already unlocked in the North American release. If it did, the European version could be bought and you could just download the unlock missions.
@@SgvSth I'm sorry, I should have been more clear. You need to download the DLC missions from a file sharing website ( or forum) on your PC and follow the instructions for installation if you own a European version of Solatorbo on your DS/DSI/3DS. Sadly, for legal reasons, I cannot link the files here. Good luck my friend. From my understanding of Wiimmfi, it is only a WiFi service for DS games that have online multiplayer and cannot allow access to the DSi shop. Additionally, Solatorbo does not have any online functionality. So yes, Wiimmfi would not have the files. Also, I said that the DLC files for the North American version of Solatorbo are pre-installed (not unlocked, but the files are present on the cartridge) and you need to play through the game up to a point where the missions appear (aka unlock). This is the one game that made me (almost) like French, they made me study it for half my life and i never managed to learn anything meaningful, plus i've forgotten the little i had managed to grasp so it's basically funny gibberish to me.
I bought this game about that time it was released so it was kinda cheap and I'm so happy that I didn't sell it after my first playthrough. Now the game is just expensive as hell. :o
Is it weird to say thank you for doing a video of Solatorobo? LOL Solatorobo has to be one of my most favorite games ever! And it's kind of both cool and nice to at least get an idea of what it is that the characters are saying. I will say though having watched Gurren Lagaun (did I spell that right?) Solatorobo is different but if it was anime it would be in the mecha related group of anime. LOL I love the story and world building of the game including the art and music. I just wish it had gotten some more love but at least there's finally another proper sequel game! LOL I do know for those who want to try to play it, it's worth it! I would say it's kind of more casual then other games I guess like the Tales series or Legend of Zelda since it's also kind of a more lighthearted and fun then super serious at times. Nice thing though it isn't too hard to gain experience and we'll level up. It's fun but it is still hard at times. I've gotten beaten up by some bosses like 5 times or kept getting low health a lot, but that might just also be my skill level or other. LOL I would say if you can't buy it or are not sure yet I know that's there's a playthrough on UA-cam from several years ago that's still around. I watched it and even though I spoiled the story for myself it was worth it!! LOL Solatorobo is still my favorite DS game and has been a big wellspring of inspiration for me as a writer for years now
I love this Game. And for everyone who wants to play it. Try getting a European Copy. Its still in English and it costs only about 15-20€ (+ Shipping). Unfortunately we did not get the Soundtrack like in the US. But for everyone, who just want to play the Game, its a good alternative.
8:38: I'm so happy I buyed the game when he was released ! XD And I strongly recommend playing Fuga: Melody of cold steel, wich is quite a spiritual sequel of the game in the same universe X3
I know some French, but I couldn't understand most of the voice clips while playing the games because of the low fidelity, and I'd never heard of "coucou" until I watched this video.
I find it fun to study the naming conventions for this series, so I just wanted to come back to give some examples: * Red's mecha is named the Dahak, which takes its name from Azi Dahaka (sources vary, but some believe it to mean "man-like dragon"), a serpent-like figure in Zoroastrian lore. Angra Mainyu, the pure evil opposite of the benevolent creator deity Ahura Mazda, is said to have created Azi Dahaka as a means of filling the world with destruction and terror, before a hero defeated Azi Dahaka and bound him to a cave below Mount Damavand. * Red and Chocolat's ship, the Asmodeus, is named for a king of demons spoken of in different Abrahamic scriptures (most notably the Book of Tobit), known for spreading the sin of lust among humanity. * Béluga's mecha is called the Salamander- a creature often associated with fire in numerous cultures, with many believing that it could withstand its effects. The art books reveal that his ship is called the Smerg, which… no idea. The kana is "スメーグ", so see if you have better luck. * Opera's mecha is known as the Tiamat, after the primordial goddess in Mesopotamian mythology representing both the salt water of the oceans and the chaos of creation, along with being the mother of all the gods that followed. Unfortunately, a war between the older and newer gods broke out, and Tiamat was eventually slain by her descendant Marduk, who created the heavens and earth from her corpse. * Gren's mecha is the Mephisto, and Calua's is the OverMephisto. As in Mephistopheles. I don't think I even need to explain this one, and yes, all the demon naming is probably intentional if there's this much of it. * In ancient Roman mythology, Lares were guardian deities that protected all under their domain (often households, but not always), and Lemures (or "larvae") were the wandering and vengeful shades/specters of the deceased. * Nero and Blanck's mechas are known as the Zairita and Srvara respectively. Azi Zairita ("yellow dragon") is itself an alternate name for Azi Sruvara ("horned dragon"), a poison-spewing beast in Zoroastrian lore that devoured many men and horses before the heroic mortal Keresaspa killed it. * Baion's name was theorized by a Japanese website to be a corruption of "phaion", the ancient Greek word for "gray". His mecha is known as the Bérius; no luck with that one either but my guess is that it's also ancient Greek or Latin. * "Septentrion" means "north".
Oh yeah, at least I can figure out the "T'as vu" thing with this video :) And as a native french speaker, if I can give a small fix : at 07:38 it is "Mince" (Damn!) and not "Mence" :)
As a french, I assumed that they did a localisation for every language on the DS with the japanese actors... XD their accents and pronunciation are hilarious
Great video man, thanks for the translation ! Just a question, where did you find the in-battle voice clips ? I've been looking for them for ages, couldn't find them either on Sounds Resource or YT. Or peraphs you extracted them yourself ?
Glad I first bought the japanese Solatorobo since I thought it was never going to be release in North America. Then Europe got it. I bought that. Then NA got it. Bought it again. I sold the NA version since the EU version is exactly the same. And now the Eu version is nearly as expensive as the NA version I just sold. Go figure.
If you are of slavic etnicity, especially Polish, you're gonna have a giggle the first time you meet the "Kurvaz" XD and you're gonna have a giggle of a lifetime, when you collect all 4 pieces of a picture named "Three Kurvaz" XD
.......Okay....3 years after this vid came out, I find it in my recommended and decide to look on Ebay, see how much this game is worth. I'm expecting a pretty pricey game due to the low print run.....but...HOLY CRAP!! Dude is straight up going for a HARD SELL on that...people wills see that big number and not even bother seeing the much smaller "Or best offer"....
2:31 for me he's just sayin "bam" there... and at 2:48 the translation is good, but due to the tone she used, it 's more likely that it was meant to be used like "seriously" like in the sentence "seriously man, you can't do that". but yeah since its japaneses talking in french... 6:56 sounds like she's just singing "la la la" there... 28:00 this... is not even understandable, but it's certainly not "tu es non" wich mean nothing (you are no). it could be "tu es là"(you are here) but again i'm not sure 7:40 what is "mence"? i'm pretty sure you meant "mince" which is a exclamation we say when something went bad, like "crap"

"Nom d'un chien! et Voilà!, Oui Chef! , Mince ! En Garde!" In french we not have a "U" Between "G" and "A"
You're Welcome
wow I forgot this game existed. The second part of the game also got me by surprise, I thought the game was over when I got there.
This is the one game that made me (almost) like French, they made me study it for half my life and i never managed to learn anything meaningful, plus i've forgotten the little i had managed to grasp so it's basically funny gibberish to me.
I have. I've had this game since 2013.
I could listen to Red talk all day. Omelette du Fromage. ❤
I bought this game about that time it was released so it was kinda cheap and I'm so happy that I didn't sell it after my first playthrough. Now the game is just expensive as hell. :o
Is it weird to say thank you for doing a video of Solatorobo? LOL
Solatorobo has to be one of my most favorite games ever! And it's kind of both cool and nice to at least get an idea of what it is that the characters are saying.
I will say though having watched Gurren Lagaun (did I spell that right?) Solatorobo is different but if it was anime it would be in the mecha related group of anime. LOL
I love the story and world building of the game including the art and music. I just wish it had gotten some more love but at least there's finally another proper sequel game! LOL
I do know for those who want to try to play it, it's worth it! LOL
I would say if you can't buy it or are not sure yet I know that's there's a playthrough on UA-cam from several years ago that's still around. I watched it and even though I spoiled the story for myself it was worth it!! LOL
Solatorobo is still my favorite DS game and has been a big wellspring of inspiration for me as a writer for years now
I don't know french, but I could still have guessed à propos, because we say the same thing in norwegian. Fun fact!
Ah, this was before the old PS1 game is being constantly listed at near 450+
Funny later that Red's VA also plays Lilac Cookie in Cookie Run Kingdom
I love this Game. And for everyone who wants to play it. Try getting a European Copy. Its still in English and it costs only about 15-20€ (+ Shipping). Unfortunately we did not get the Soundtrack like in the US. But for everyone, who just want to play the Game, its a good alternative.
Never thought I'd see this game on here 👀
8:38: I'm so happy I buyed the game when he was released ! XD
And I strongly recommend playing Fuga: Melody of cold steel, wich is quite a spiritual sequel of the game in the same universe X3
FINALLY I FIND SOLA TO ROBO CONTENT
snagged a loose copy of it at gamestop back on 2014 for 15 dollars.
I know some French, but I couldn't understand most of the voice clips while playing the games because of the low fidelity, and I'd never heard of "coucou" until I watched this video.
I find it fun to study the naming conventions for this series, so I just wanted to come back to give some examples:
* Red's mecha is named the Dahak, which takes its name from Azi Dahaka (sources vary, but some believe it to mean "man-like dragon"), a serpent-like figure in Zoroastrian lore.
* "Septentrion" means "north".
This game needs either a remake or remaster.
throwback to when my nana picked this up for roughly 2 euros in a saturn xd
Honestly, the premise of the world seems to bare more than a passing resemblance to Xenoblade 2.
Oh how i missed you my furry awakening
You should try doing a "What are they saying" for Fuga: Melodies of steel
A game by the same developers which is a prequel to Solatorobo
I got the game from GameStop a bagillion years ago, figuring out that the English version is worth some money was a cool surprise lmao
Oh yeah, at least I can figure out the "T'as vu" thing with this video :)
And as a native french speaker, if I can give a small fix : at 07:38 it is "Mince" (Damn!) and not "Mence" :)
THANK YOU FOR THE "OH LA LA" CLARIFICATION!!! SO MANY PEOPLE THINKS IT'S ALWAYS seductive... somehow
Baguette speaking here
*French dialogue with a strong japanese accent XD
As a french normie, I can say your accent is quite good
YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!
My favourite DS game.
skeet
This games 2nd Story is very similar to Final Fantasy IX's Story
As a french, I assumed that they did a localisation for every language on the DS with the japanese actors... XD their accents and pronunciation are hilarious
Spanish guards in assassins creed
A great game
Boy, am I glad I got my EUROPEAN copy back in 2013 or so. If I had discovered this game now years later I'd be pissed
What about the friendly faced guard by the water :(
I'm french, and I always thought that it was just translated
This game need a remake for ps5😀
Might I suggest “JoJo: Heritage for the Future”?
1:34 BNA: Brand New Animal anyone? Sounds familiar right now?
Great video man, thanks for the translation ! Just a question, where did you find the in-battle voice clips ? I've been looking for them for ages, couldn't find them either on Sounds Resource or YT. Or peraphs you extracted them yourself ?
If I remember correctly it was through UA-cam and sound file websites but if they've been removed that's unfortunate
@@DuelScreens Aah too bad, thanks for replying though
Glad I first bought the japanese Solatorobo since I thought it was never going to be release in North America. Then Europe got it. I bought that. Then NA got it. Bought it again. I sold the NA version since the EU version is exactly the same. And now the Eu version is nearly as expensive as the NA version I just sold. Go figure.
If you are of slavic etnicity, especially Polish, you're gonna have a giggle the first time you meet the "Kurvaz" XD and you're gonna have a giggle of a lifetime, when you collect all 4 pieces of a picture named "Three Kurvaz" XD
...or if you read Polandball.
.......Okay....3 years after this vid came out, I find it in my recommended and decide to look on Ebay, see how much this game is worth. I'm expecting a pretty pricey game due to the low print run.....but...HOLY CRAP!! It ranges from $200+ on average to one psycho asking for, and I am NOT joking $1,000,000usd +$5.85 shipping....or best offer. Dude is straight up going for a HARD SELL on that...people wills see that big number and not even bother seeing the much smaller "Or best offer"....
luckely they put subtittles in tom clancy rainbow six siege
yep humans being total jerks just like in most sci fi and fantasy
So, did you make that episode on Fuga?
can we get a a what are they saying in overwatch video possibly?
Whats up
Funny how this is french and the first game is full on english dubbed
It's not "mence" but "mince"
Like "heck" i suppose
It's "en garde" not Guard
They should cod 4 for the russians cuz their screaming is hilarious
2:31 for me he's just sayin "bam" there... and at 2:48 the translation is good, but due to the tone she used, it 's more likely that it was meant to be used like "seriously" like in the sentence "seriously man, you can't do that". but yeah since its japaneses talking in french...
6:56 sounds like she's just singing "la la la" there...
28:00 this... is not even understandable, but it's certainly not "tu es non" wich mean nothing (you are no). it could be "tu es là"(you are here) but again i'm not sure
7:40 what is "mence"? i'm pretty sure you meant "mince" which is a exclamation we say when something went bad, like "crap"
28:00 this... is not even understandable, but it's certainly not "tu es non" wich mean nothing (you are no). it could be "tu es là"(you are here) but again i'm not sure
2:17 nom D'UN chien
2:24 et voilà! (no vous)
3:00 subtitles really said “allah” ☠️
Anybody thinks Xenoblade Cronichles 2 copied most of Solatorobo storyline and characters?
