- Einhänder is a hidden gem from Square Enix (Back when they used to be known as Squaresoft) about the war between the Earth and the Moon. The forces of Earth all speak German so not only do we get to shine a spotlight on the game we get to translate all the dialogue.

I made a transcript and translation of what all the voices were a few years ago. I even managed to track down the German VA they hired for the role, lol. Working with the raw audio, I came up with a few differences I think I should point out. I'll also include some more poetic translations I made to sound better in English)

Spinne: "Kampfformation D! Kampfformation D! Alle fertig machen zur Kampf der Klasse A!" (Battle formation D! Battle formation D! All hands prepare for a class A battle!)
Gecko: "Einbrecher auf dem Deck! Einbrecher auf dem Deck! Sofort beseitigung!" (Intruder on deck. Intruder on deck. Exterminate.)
Gustav: "Wilkommen, hier findest du nur dein grab!" (Welcome! Here you'll find your grave!)
Salamander: "Schnell auftauchen! vorbereitung auf luftangriff!" (Warning! Surface! Warning! Surface! Prepare for imminent air strike!)
Gestell: "Hier ist P-5! Einhander im 16 Graben gefunden! Überlass ihn mir! Stör mich nicht!" (P-5 reporting, Einhander located at trench-16! Leave him to me, don't interfere!)
Sturmvogel: "B Gruppe abwerfen. B Gruppe ist gelandet! F-gruppe zur unterstützung" (B-Group launching. B-Group has landed. F-Group to support position.)
Durer: "Du willst sterben!" (You will die here)
Any translations for within the themes, like in the Street theme? there's some German in that one too.
I was about to say the quotes from German isn't 1:1 in this video. They made no sense otherwise :D

yah, this game blew me away when I first saw it way back in PS Underground trial disc. Ya could play the first section to the mechdragon in the trial and I hadnt played much console gaming for a long time when I finally had enough extra money to buy a Playstation 1 and the graphics were just so sharp and detailed at the times.
After only having Atari 400 games to play for so long back then , and having only played one of the first NES consoles , the Playstation 1 was just amazing.

A little thing i did dig up in the extra gallery was a test shot probably done on the next gen console and it was "ps2" looking. So a theory be einhander was a test bed for the ps2 but backtracked noting ps2 being hard to develop for

It's definitely one of the games that made me want to own a PlayStation. I made my decision to get one a few month after I played this.
It's now been 25 years since the launch of Einhänder, Square Enix has got to celebrate this landmark anniversary somehow!

I've been saying this for years now. Einhänder needs a remake! It's crazy how Square Enix is just sitting on this gem and not budging. Years ago I emailed Square Enix about it, and I actually got a reply. Whomever it was said they remembered the game, but said there were no plans for a remake or sequel.

@@vienlacrose "Einhander" isn't actually the fighter's name. It's called the Asterion. "Einhander" is the nickname that the earth forces give this type of fighter because it kinda looks like a sword.

@@FollowMe4REP Yes, you battle him, along with other characters from old Squaresoft games. Like the main gear in Xenogears.
Some mythological details were dropped from the overseas version to the U.S. one, however few, and the Great War was called WW3. The most noticeable omission is that the Earth forces are named SODOM after that ill-fated city in the Bible. So a mythos/Biblical reference here or there go without explicit mention and the concept of WW3 was removed in the States, plus the text scrolls on either side of the final stage read differently between here and overseas. The gallery images also differ between versions, and it takes going into them to get the names.
Those were the only couple of things missed, so it wasn't that much. Other than this brief moment, great job on the coverage.
TBF, I kinda enjoy rename from Sodom to Gesetz. Sounds right for such a German-heavy culture.

Cool fact. in Final Fantasy XIV, there is a boss named Einhander in the dungeon The Keeper of the Lake. Comes equipped with talons to hold different weapons and a minigun is one of them.
I don't speak German, but the title was easy to figure out considering the fact that entertainment media likes to bash it into our brains that zweihander often refers to a sword even though the word has many different contexts.
Did you know that you can destroy the reactors in Sturmvogel stage with just your hand? Glad to see someone else out here that loves this game as much as I do.
You can beat the second bosses first 2 phases by just sticking your arm in its back and front claw! 😅
Hi. Fallen doesnt mean to die. It means "to fall". The name of the mini is not grief, its Greif-name of fantasy bird/lion mix. And he says . "Follow the orders from above and land, otherwise we shoot you down".

The enemy saying "du" is informal but not necessarily rude. It just implies a level of familiarity. If that's not the case, it can be considered rude but most Germans won't hate you for doing it. Especially if they know English and its lack of distinction between formal and informal "you".
Also, a lot of the German in the game has broken grammar.
There *is* a secret boss accessible by destroying Scharzchgeist's top hatch, but it's just called the Monitor. Very small, jellyfish lookin thing that's fragile but spits out lots of bullets.

I really like that Einhander is a double entendre. It refers to both the mechanical arm of your ship and also the fact that you are single handedly facing an enormous army.

Gustav translates loosely from Scandinavian as Staff of the Gods. Could be a play on words since staff also means worker. Seems like middle management of a garbage dump.
Durer translates from Hungarian meaning door maker. This could be a reference to the heavier weapons that could blow a hole through you like the master key shotgun attachment.
Either way great work. I loved this game as a kid and continue to mourn the loss of my Playstation one.

And yea I totally agree, they need to remake it. Game had AMAZING music and atmosphere. It was a solid rail shooter but the atmosphere stood in a class of it's own. It felt like a mix of star wars and blade runner. From the moment you selected your ship and pressed start, you were locked into this intense little world for about one earth hour.
First miniboss Greif's name is actually German too. It means Griffin, which is fitting for a robot that's part humanoid and part hovership since the Griffin is part lion and part eagle.
I believe what that first boss should have said was "Dies ist eine Warnung: lass deine Waffen fallen! which means "This is a warning: Drop your weapons!"
Good job guys! been waiting 20+ years for the translation. Did not see the squid jellyfish thing that pops out the black ghost. Still good job.
To everyone whining over the pronunciation these guys did a great service to fans of the game. I doubt they intended their video to withstand scrutiny from native speakers or masters in the language.

HAHA man, the skull lady billboard, I forgot about that! I remember when I first came across it playing and it was like super creepy as the whole game kinda gave me that feeling with the threatening German dialogue being projected loudly at me.
I wasnt sure what to expect after the death billboard. lol
wow Einhander, was so exciting when I first saw it in Playstation Underground previews discs way back when, the graphics look was just really cool looking without being overwhelming your visuals.
Now I want to get my disassembled Playstation 1 back together and play these again!

Fantastic video. This was the best shooter, EVER, not to mention an awesome soundtrack. I remember playing it as a kid, JUST to hear the eng song "Earthlight", which I still have today. I would love to see a reboot of this game.

My mother is German and I asked her to translate this game when I was a child to her annoyance, I'm glad someone did a youtube video about it. Also the F-35 isn't the Thunderbird. Thunderbirds are a US Air Force demonstration squadron.

Good stuff! I wish you had released this video a couple months before you did, because I could have referenced it on my podcast, when we covered it. I've long been a fan of Einhander, but never managed to beat it, at least on a single credit. This would have been good information to have for that episode, for sure.
I still own the original game and the ps1 to go with it and they're going with me to the grave @ 43 years old I love plugging in the ps1 and play this game along with The Raiden Project.
Now the soundtrack makes sense . it always sounded like German techno/electronica to me

Einhander is probably the best shmup I have EVER played. The graphics and set pieces for this PSONE game are almost jaw dropping for the era.
Man listen, this is my favorite game. I was always curious about the phrases because of how cool the sound. EXCELLENT WORK!!! Having this in the PSN would make 2020 worth the sadness... almost lol.

I heavily recommend checking the "2197" Album too if you liked Einhander's OST.
Ironically, Einhander's AST is weaker than the OST.
Late to reply, but a hint of notice to your wish is that Kingdom Hearts 3's Gummi Ship sections/Boss Battles are directly done hands by the legendary devs of Einhander... including having the Epyon and even showdown (as a superboss) vs Schwartzgeist! One day there may be a remake, or Einhander 2?

This was one of my fav games growing up and its so cool its German since I found out I am a quarter German and I have alot of German friends my one friend is actually coming to visit me from Germany and its his 1st time in the US.

Yea this game rules. It's short and sweet and really fun. It would be really cool to see a remake. I imagine it would look something like Zone of Enders while keeping the 2D style scroll.
Gecko’s voice acting is what did it for me not the gas mask part but gecko’s voice acting…struck absolute awe and fear into my heart…
They could be saying a combination of the two for Gecko's lines, something along the lines of this:
"One of the imprinted! Intruder alert! Locate! Eradicate!", or this, "Intruder alert! one of the imprinted! Locate! Eradicate!"

Mücke actually means just fly. There is an explicit word for mosquito (moskito).
5:24 is correct. I have no Idea how you figured that out. Some dialogs are barely understandable, even as a native speaker.
8:30 The Moth would be called "Schw >ä< rmer". Schwarmer (singular and plural form would be idendical) would be a "swarmer" like swarming the field with enemies. But even that would be uncommon, bad german. Just not a thing you'd say/use.
8:37 again just bad german. There is a word for double humbed camels "Dromedar". ZweiKamel would be like TwoCamel. Just two words slapped together. Or MewTwo.
8:56 He's actually saying "Graben" not "Gerät". There are multiple forms of Graben but I guess trench would fit the theme of war and tanks. Another option would be like fissure/rift. Like a gap in a canyon. Graben could refer to the architecturall environment.
9:00 sounds like "überlass sie mir und stör mich nicht" which would translate to "leave them to me. And don't interrupt me."
9:06 You probably mean "Ausfahrgestell" (ausfahren - to extend in that context) and (gestell - frame, platform, in a context like a car platform, which would be fahr(drive) gestell). It's not possible to translate that 1:1. But I think "extendable frame" would be as close as it gets.
German in general doesn't make alot of sense. There are more exceptions than rules and even those never apply for everything.

two things i would have loved to hear from this: in the secret area of the first stage, when you fly by the missile it sounds like there is someone saying "system disturbed" or something of that nature. you can hear it on the music track for that area if you happen have the OST. id like to know what its actually saying. Secondly, can you transcribe what the heck they are saying in the rap verse for the boss battle song? it goes by so fast.
loved this video, and yes square enix NEEEDS to re-release this in some way. Also, r-type final needs the remake treatment too. if those both happened i'd be a happy happy gamer.

I found a long time ago that that rap part of the drache boss soundtrack is a SAMPLE used on many other tracks. Not sure what it's name is. You gotta look out for it bro. It sound very accelerated but the original is singed more paused.

You got Ein right which means one. But Händer means Handed not Handedness. So German to English Einhänder means One handed.
Gustav may be a reference to a Weapon used in WW1 i think, schwerer Gustav.

Einhander was a badass game for it’s time. This game and one other PS1 game is why I still own a PS1 console. I own the square soft version.
Igot lucky when i bought this game, When i was looking for it ,it was several years later after its release when i got it. Found it at the time EB games on a shelf by itself. I knew that moment it was destiny for me to find it. Yes please a remake maybe more on the story?
