Just picked up an FG a couple of weeks ago..bought my wife an FG back in 1985 along with Nikkor 35-70mm f/3.3-4.5 AI zoom lens and SB-15 flash but gave that outfit to my granddaughter a few years ago. Missed that little camera so much I found a good deal on one in 'excellent' condition and just had to get another one. I have two other Nikon SLR bodies: an Ftn Photomic circa 1971 and an FM circa 1980. The FG doesn't quite have the build quality of those two cameras but makes up for it in sheer convenience what with the exposure mode options and importantly; off-the-film TTL flash metering capability with compatible flash units. The 'E' series lenses introduced with the EM are for the most part decent lenses: I have a 28mm f/2.8 E series lens which I've been quite happy with. Prices for good examples of the FG are quite reasonable now.

The FG was known to have shutter problems. The FE was the best of this line.

I bought an FG back in the late 1980s, but hardly used it and sold it. After learning more about the camera, a couple of years ago, I seized on a bargain offering for a mint FG. It reminds me of the wonderful Pentax ME series, except that it has proven to be a reliable camera long term. As to the Series E lenses issued starting with the EM as a budget lens line to go with the new budget cameras, the prime knock is that in an age of multi-coating, Nikon chose to down grade the Series E lenses by only using the old single coating. A few are quite good (50mm ; 100mm, 75-150mm zoom), the rest are very average, except for the 28mm, which performance is so poor that it almost certainly the worst prime lens NIkon ever made with an F-mount.

I'm waiting for one I bought on Ebay with a jammed shutter with no batteries so 🤞my £20 purchase will work with fresh batteries.
