Deep snow? Bud if you think you're getting through real deep mountain snow on anything but a sled you're dreaming. What you got there is what we call end of August snow in Canada.

The amount of snow you get isn’t the problem, it’s the type of snow you’re driving in. We get 10-15 feet over the winters with large snowbanks that overtake whole buildings but getting around in ATVs and UTVs is still a breeze because the snow is packed and dense from frequent use. It’s the unpacked powder snow that will give you problems so if you’re riding mostly untouched trails full of the fluffy stuff then definitely go with a sled. Otherwise you don’t really need one.
I agree, in 4 inches of snow a 4 wheeler runs better than a sled
And now there's a giant muddy mess so the sleds can't get through lol
Our Farmall Cub could go through fairly deep snow.It had deep chevron's on the rear and steering sand tires on front. It only had rear brakes, but could be individually activated. It was mostly the plow that got it stuck .it didn't lift enough.
ATV are not allowed on the trails in Maine after late Oct except a few areas that say closed after snow depth is deep enough to groom trails. Now you can add tracks and reg your ATV as a snowmobile however a lot of the bridges are not built wide enough or strong enough to handle all the weight of an SxS with tracks. Bottom line if you want to ride in Maine on the trail system in the winter get a snowmobile. Thanks for the video

yeah ATVs are not allowed.... its too bad though because some offer snow tracks you can swap the tires for.... I would much rather do that instead of buy a snowmobile
Snowmobiles are cool. I don't know if it's a secret or maybe a well-known fact among snowmobile enthusiasts but those nasty boys can ride on water. When I saw that for the first time I was impressed so much that I barely avoided craping my pants and starting to believe in alternative physics.

You've got some perfect fun snow there Steve, I'd like to see how these machine's run with a set of tracks installed. Running with tires is good but a set of tracks

Tracks are a lot of fun, but high maintenance and really suck some fuel.
@@robertcruickshank5617 Yes I know, on both points,..I have a dealer within 12 km's of me,..I get to see most of the models . Another point on tracks is they do a whole lot better if your ATV has power steering, don't they?

Fun review. Been running Can Am Outlander Max's in the Colorado snow for years and they are a blast. My 1000 with 82HP is great fun!

I have 2019 Outlander Max 1000 XTP on back country tracks best all worlds love it
I have seen snow 2 metres deep around Westree Ontario...is where my hunt/fish camp is. An ATV will not go thru that. I remember going to Meteor Lake and Shoo Fly Lake...was braking trail with a long track Arctic Cat Cheetah.. i stopped and said to my dads friend...snow doesnt look too deep. I stepped off the running boards and was up to my armpits in white 💩. No ATV will.go thru that. Merry Christmas Stephen. Love your work on TFL.

Anything over 20" of snow the sled is the way to go for sure (unless you can afford the track system for your UTV).

Neither of those machines can even begin to take you where we Alaskans take sleds. With that said I do own a 2020 Can Am 850 outlander xt max and a Can Am Max Limited. FYI. The Max (2up) vs the non 2 up are the same length and try deflating your tires a bit.
You should do a ranger crew vs a defender crew
bout time they got rid of visco Lok crap. Grinding and never working right. Just had to buy a rapid locking differential from super atv for my 14 maverick.
When I sat on the ATV at the first and only time steering was a big problem for me. It had got a bicycle steering wheel (is it even a wheel? Maybe it's steering bar?) so my body tried to apply bicycle riding patterns to the ATV, specifically steering to the same side to which ATV body rolls. So when I turned right the ATV rolled to the left than my instincts dictated me to turn left and I couldn't fight that. I was able to turn but very slowly. It was no fun at all. This experience really made me worry that I may not be able to handle a car. Thankfully, there's no such problem driving a car
Why does the bigger ATV doesn't have a windshield? It has that yellowish-green thing that can hold the glass but it doesn't have one. How does it make sense?
Thats not a lot of snow....sorry. But you’re absolutely right that unless you live in Alaska or somewhere way north a snowmobile is a waste of money. We figured that out in 90s. We use all studded tires on our machines, winter & summer. I agree with your thoughts on the front diff, its just too bad CanAm took over a decade to fix something Polaris has known since the 80’s.
Even up here in Alaska, an ATV can be used year round for the most part. The snowy trails are packed enough for four wheelers to ride with ease, except when there’s heavy powder snowfall overnight on fresh trails or during spring when all the snow starts to get slushy.

I gave you a 👎 cause I just bought a new 2020 defender xmr like the one in your video and going from a wolverine x2 to the xmr. I think the xmr is a best and amazingly fun to drive. Twice the machine of the wolverine.

He films in Norland, Ontario which is approx. 80 kms north east of Peterborough. Ptbo is not part of the Kawartha Lakes.
Cool video, but you're from Canada, can you really call that "deep" snow? There's a fine line where these won't handle the snow and that's about 18". Try this again in February for the fun of it.

I've had my can am x3 on 33's pushing through 23 inches of snow. Sketchy on the side of a mountain but it still got it done.

That's not deep snow. I ride snowmobiles in places where the snow is deeper than 10 feet and most places even on the trail the snow is several feet deep.
An ATV is great but will never replace a snowmobile. I will concede...where I live in Southwest Ontario, a snowmobile is virtually useless because of the lack of snow BUT go.north to Parry Sound and more north, an ATV will meet its Waterloo.

@@perpelle I agree, but I'll also say this, I never had any interest in ATVs until I got one for taking the kids around on. Now I get the enjoyment. It's a different kind of fun than a bike is but I like it almost as much.
First off that's not deep snow, second there is no comparing the handling of a sled to an atv at speed, third the power to wait ratio is no comparison a 600cc sled still has way more pull than any ATV or a utv
Bottom line is if you actually want to have a fun aggressive dynamic experience go with handlebars and forget a stupid family oriented steering wheel.

Considering you can buy a lower end model ATV and a lower end model snowmobile for the price of a SXS, seems like the better route if $20K is the budget.

Exactly my thoughts, just ankle deep tho. Even my mother's Model X can drive through short distance in that snow.
That's not deep snow. I've tried to make it up trails in 2-3 feet of snow on my grizzly 700.
It didn't work out so well.
