  • It’s hard to believe that it’s ten years since ‘The Way We Were’ Museum at Wigan Pier closed. The popular attraction portrayed Victorian life in Wigan around 1900. Highlights included a walk-through mine, a genuine historic pub interior, shops, seaside attractions, houses, backyards and workplaces. Opened in 1986, The Way We Were closed its doors on 20th December 2007 after attracting over ten million people. The Museum pioneered the use of professional actors interacting with visitors - most memorably the terrifying Victorian schoolroom. The Wigan Pier building is still there but empty, despite grand plans for redevelopment announced when the Museum closed. But The Way We Were lives on in people’s hearts, memories, the road signs on the M6 and this film!
The film was produced by Tradition Films www.traditionfi... for what was Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust www.inspiringhe...
Wigan now has the Museum of Wigan Life www.wigan.gov....

What a delightful, yet sad look into the world of our ancestors.
    Thank you.

So glad this has been recorded as it has brought many memories back of going as a youngster. I live in Wigan I remember my relatives came over from American and were taken aback by the strict classroom teacher but added to the realism. We went to trencherfield mill afterwards and the engineer let them sound the horn on the steam engine, it made my so proud showing off Wigans heritage to them.

Thankyou for the happy memories. My father took me here several times, i also enjoyed school trips here. Sad to hear it shut down. It should never have been closed.

Remember a great school trip in the early 90s. The classroom part was scary and I think we wrote on slate with chalk, was 30 years ago so a bit fuzzy now.

Belting. Thanks for this. I did get a chance to go there, but I’d forgotten a lot of what they’d displayed. Great vid.

Went many years ago with a school party of 10/11 yr olds. Schoolroom was superb. Strict teachers gave a real flavour. Went a few years later and it was v toned down almost apologetic and v disappointing. Heard that there'd been complaints that the kiddies were upset. God help us all.

Vaguely remember going back and noticing that it wasn't as strict too. You've jogged my memory
