    got the nikkor 40mm a month or so ago and i gotta say i just love it in my Z50 (60mm or so) and it feels just right, some people may say that something around 50-60 can be a bit boring, but im just having a blast with the lens, and the best part is that if someday i go full frame, i still got a neat 40mm. And about the Ricoh, man i wish i have one, just because is so compact, small and light! it rocks for street photography! As always great video, cheers from Chile!

    I notice that the Ricoh has much better color representation throughout the image. Whereas in the Z6ii the color from a signboard(for ex: blue) bleeds all around the image.

      Hmmm, which sing board do you mean? I don't recall. It could be my editing as the photos are not straight from the camera. Such a small camera as the Ricoh GR is perfect for some weird trickier angles, and I feel that a flip screen would be more useful than a viewfinder for a camera like this. Even if it makes the body a bit more bulcky.

    • @EYExplore
      @EYExplore  2 роки тому +1

    I am getting a GR iiix tomorrow and to tell you the truth I was worried about the odd focal length. I am more comfortable with 35mm and 50mm. But this video has shown me that you can get just as good shots with a 40mm and I am no longer worried, once I get used to it I'm sure I'll be able to get in the same flow as with 35 and 50mm

    • @EYExplore
      @EYExplore  2 роки тому +1

      Honestly, I think between 35 and 40 it would hard to notice a difference in a 'taste' test. I like 40 a lot but I had to use a 35mm I would be fine, and I'm sure it will be so the other way around. However, going from 40 to 50 I do notice the difference and it feels quite constricting. :)

I have Sony A7riv and A7iii I’ve bought the small Sony 40mm 2.5 G lens in a bid to take an A7 with me, but you got it spot on at the start, you can take the Ricoh when you are not going out solely to take photos. This light is why I force myself out of bed at sunrise when I travel - Just to try to catch it twice in the day.
    Which unfortunately means 2am for Kyoto in June. 😂
    This set-up me think that it would be a pretty great combo to pair the Nikon with the GRIII 28mm.
    What the aps-c lacks in cleaner gain and slower apertures, it makes up for in the versatilty of having that wide field of view ready to go without a lens swap. It has to be the fastest, most convenient and compact way to pull out a wide shot when a scene doesn't accomodate the primary focal length so well.

    • @EYExplore
      @EYExplore  2 роки тому +2

      Having played around with Leicas and Fujis before, I can say that I don't like any kind of viewfinder where parallax comes into play and you can't get a 100% accurate representation of the framing. I just find this very frustrating. My left brain can't handle it. So, I like viewfinders/screens that shoe me exactly what I'm going to get in the final image. :)

  • @davidwoods80
    @davidwoods80 2 роки тому +1

    Good video! You touched on the difference in ISO at similar aperture and shutter settings, and in the video's sample images the GR's ISO is sometimes nearly twice as high as the Nikon (though not always). Do you see a massive difference in noise in, say, prints at 8x10, or high magnification of the images? Hard to tell even at 4K on UA-cam.

    • @EYExplore
      @EYExplore  2 роки тому +2

      For sure there is more noise in the Ricoh at high ISOs, but it's not that pronounced luckily. I think the difference in exposure is due to two factors, of course the smaller sensor means smaller lens, which means smaller image circle, which means lens light overall on the sensor. And the second thing is that the Z6II has a BSI sensor, which I feel adds around 2/3 to 1 stop of light, at least in some informal comparisons I made with my D4 back when I first got the Z6II. I'm guessing the GR does not have a BSI sensor, so that also has some effect on light collection. Add in that the Nikon lens can go to f/2 and it becomes clear that the Nikon has many advantages in low light. So, it's pretty amazing that the GRIII can hold its own in such conditions.

    Quality post, pics and perspectives. Clever thumbnail, too - nice. Image at 8:17 (vendors diag perspective, my fav). Have a GRIII and agree w/observations. Would be a neat trick to pull a Nikon out of your pocket😁. Comes down to usage “case” - less so IQ. I miss pull out LCD on Ricoh, and had to add “thumb rest thingy” attachment via hot-shoe. Buttons a tad too small.
    Ever use touch screen to release shutter on Ricoh? Wonder if shutter or screen tap would be more stable.
    Side by side image placement would have been a plus, IMO. YT rendering (720p on my iPad) makes IQ comparison challenging.
    I imagine rail yards overpass at vid start must be great place for light trails at night - don’t recall them in prior vids. At 4:36 descending stairs alongside roadway might also make for impressive low angle road shot. No?

    • @EYExplore
      @EYExplore  2 роки тому +1

      You'd need some pretty big pockets!! Yeah, being so small it can be hard to manipulate. I think it depends on hand size. Mine are not huge, so it feels perfect. I used the tough shutter in the beginning a few times, but don't use it now. I do sometimes move the focus point around and use the touch screen for that. True enough on the long exposure potential, especially for the trains. I've never shot them from this particular bridge. Will have to eventually! :)

    What I found interesting is that when in 17:33 you mentioned that it's easier to achieve slower shutter speeds with the Ricoh because it was lighter. Because I've had the completely opposite idea about this: I thought that having a lighter camera would allow shaky hands to have a greater influence over the camera opposed to a heavier camera which would need more energy to move around. That is the main idea I implement into videography though, I'd be interested if the same idea would not apply the same way to photography. Greetings from Germany!

    • @EYExplore
      @EYExplore  2 роки тому +1

      Well, I actually said SMALLER. Actually, small and HEAVY would be ideal for me. But the fact that it's light is outweighed by the small size and the very short lens. I think honestly the main thing is the shortness of the lens, which greatly reduces the 'arc' of any motion applies to the camera. I think it's true though that a very big heavy camera is good for video because you are MOVING the camera in many cases. So that weight allows for the inertia that smooths out motion. I also find it helps when 'hanging' the camera by holding it in top-mounted grip. The heavy weight acts like a pendulum and lets the motion of the center of gravity settle below the pivot point (the top-mounted grip). But in the case of holding the camera out in front of me with two hands, I find it's easier if it's lighter and smaller. I do have pretty steady hands though. :)

    • @SamuelHeinrich
      @SamuelHeinrich 2 роки тому +1

      @EYExplore "the fact that it's light is outweighed by the small size" love the little pun there, intentional or not hahaha
      But this makes sense, that must also give a drawback to cheap telephoto lenses without stabilization 😬
      I heard about the top mounted grip before, though I haven't quite understood it properly yet. I'll look into that more!

    the Ricoh gr has a shorter actual focal length even if it gives equivalent results to the 40mm full frame, which means that a longer shutter speed can be used even without stabilisation.

    • @EYExplore
      @EYExplore  Рік тому

      I would say no, because due to the crop factor the smaller FOV results in details being the same size. It comes down to size of details. For example, you could use a tiny sensor with the same lens resulting in a 'telephoto FOV' making very large details. In that case you would still have to worry about camera shake. That's how I think about it anyway. :)

    • @IDuBStepSZ
      @IDuBStepSZ Рік тому +1

      It's a fun idea, but the framing would be exactly the same, while the editing would be different. I edit all my photos as I am shooting raw. And in this case I edited the photos from each camera on different days, so all you'd really be seeing is the different edits I applied, which is more a result of my mood than anything else.

    I still enjoy watching you shoot in this video, but photo comparisons between modern cameras is almost pointless to me. They’re all so good in image quality, and especially on a youtube video you’ll never see any subtle differences. Also as you say, they’re both very different cameras for different ways of shooting.
    To me, I buy a camera today based on ergonomics, features, battery life, reliability, EVF quality (Ricoh GR fail), dual card slots, weather sealing, lens selection, etc. “IQ” isn’t in that list. Nobody can tell the difference between even my micro4/3 cameras and full frame Nikons in reasonable size prints.

      i don't think you are fully understanding the reason for this camera comparison. quality of images wasn't compared here, it was the different sizes of the cameras and how he prefers to them in a situation

      Yeah, I agree! Which is why I really didn't try to compare the IQ, just here and there. I also didn't bother showing SOOC JPGs and didn't bother making the edits consistent. I edited the GR photos on a different day than the Nikon ones and you can see I ended up with a somewhat different palette. This is partially due to sensor but mostly due to my mood at the time of editing. So anyway, that's why I focused on how I use the two cameras. :)

      @@EYExplore oh I thought the GR images were SOOC ! Which software did you use to edit them ? Was it a light adjustment or heavy ?

      @@bilbo8338 My edits tend to be light but not always. I don't recall what I did here, probably not to drastic. I always use Adobe Camera Raw, which is basically Lightroom. :)

    Nikon or Naikan? 🙂 I prefer to call Nikon, the Japanese way.

      The president of Nikon said there is no correct way to pronounce it. It’s a made up word, from Nippon Kogaku, not a proper name anyway. All regional variations are correct.

      I switch between both. When speaking with Japanese people I say it in Japanese. When did a job for Nikon Europe they insisted I call it Nyh-kon :)
