    Very happy to see this video.
    I graduated from a college in Sugamo, Japan.
    Since I became an office worker, photography became my hobby and I rarely took pictures of Sugamo.
    So it was very new to me even though I am familiar with the area.
    After watching your video, I recently purchased a Ricoh GR IIIx Urban Edition.
    I am very much looking forward to going out for a walk with this camera and meeting up with old friends.

    Between the GRIIIx and 40mm for the Nikon Z line you have to be one happy man.

    • @EYExplore
      @EYExplore  2 роки тому +2

      Yeah!! I wanted to buy the 40mm on day one (came out on Oct 1st in Japan) but it's sold out EVERYWHERE. I really wanna get my hands on one! That lens is part of the reason I finally went for a Z6II. Nikon had some vague info about the 28mm and 40mm compact lenses on their Z lineup roadmap as far back as fall 2020. I thought, hey that's perfect for me! :)

    • @EYExplore
      @EYExplore  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you!! I edit them all from scratch, but I do tend to go slightly for that warmish look of positive film. It's more subconscious though. We have a video on the way comparing the shooting experience of the GR3 vs GR3x. I did not use the crop modes because I just NEVER use the crops modes at all. To me that defeats the purpose. :)

    I have the GRIII and have preordered the GRIII X. There is no denying both cameras are perfect for street. It’s has to be mentioned that the battery life is, put simply rubbish. Not only that, when you take a number of shots in quick succession, the camera overheats and switches off. I’d say for a full days street photography, you need 4 batteries, or more. And don’t shoot too fast. I’m not picking holes here. Its a shame because both cameras in your review are perfect for street photography. Great shots btw.

    • @EYExplore
      @EYExplore  2 роки тому

      I rarely go through more than one battery in an outing. I recommend keeping the screen off toe save juice. You do so using the display button on the back of the camera. I've also never had them overheat. I guess I don't shoot more than 4 or 5 shots in a burst at most, and that's rarely. Anyway, I accept that this is your experience with them, but I've never encountered this.

    Snapfocus is more difficult to use with 40mm i think?

    • @EYExplore
      @EYExplore  2 роки тому +4

      Yes, it must be a bit more difficult because of the shallower DOF, but I'd say it's not very noticeable. Although, as you could see I don't really use snap-focus that much for the way I shoot. However, I have spent years using zone focus (same basic thing) on full frame with a 40mm which is even shallower DOF, and therefore move difficult, with great success! :)

      Yes!! Actually, we have a video like that already shot. It's in my editing queue and should be up in a couple of weeks. At 11:19, why do you want exposure compensation in manual mode?

    • @EYExplore
      @EYExplore  2 роки тому +1

      Good questions! It's because I'm using M but still using Auto ISO (it's a separate setting). Of course on FULL Manual exposure comp doesn't do much. On the GR II there was M for full manual and TAv for manual shutter and aperture, but keeping Auto ISO. On the GR III it's like most other cameras, M only means manual shutter and aperture, while ISO has a separate setting which can be Manual or Auto. And in that case, I use the exposure comp to adjust exposure. :)

    • @EYExplore
      @EYExplore  2 роки тому +1

      I never have issues with the batter, but I also don't expect a single little battery like this to last for 12 hours of shooting and thousands of photos. But a single battery easily lasts me an outing, which can last 3-4 hours and I might shoot 200-400 photos.
      I also make sure to keep the screen off the back of the camera (using the display button) to save juice. Having said that, I do tend to carry a spare battery (they are pretty cheap, anyway) if I think I'm going to use it all day. Once in a while I go to the spare. Hi, I need some advice for a "definitive" family photo camera that brings out images with some three-dimensionality focused more on portraits of my fast-moving children. I currently have a Nikon z50 16-50 and 50-250 (I am only unhappy with the small af limited area in Af-c and the lack of a 70-300 for my games) and sometimes it annoys me to take my bag with me in contexts to go out with my family and to the sea. need at least a compact camera that can be attached to a belt loop or that fits into a large pocket! I am undecided between the gr III x or fujifilm x100v or x-e4 + 27mm I am looking for the most creative and fun camera that will entice me to take it with me regardless, thanks!

    • @EYExplore
      @EYExplore  2 роки тому +3

      If you want shallow DOF (which it sounds like) then the Fuji X100V will probably serve you better as it has an f/2 lens (I believe). But when I was first purchasing my GR II in 2017 or so, I was considering the Fuji X100F. Ultimately I chose the GR because it simply much much smaller and therefore more pocket-able than the X100. I have zero regrets to this day. The GR is the ultimate bring-along camera. The only times I don't have it on me are if I have a bigger camera instead (e.g. Nikon Z6 or D4). But the GR is my 'basic' camera in the sense that I will always have AT LEAST a GR. And the new GR IIIx, with the 40mm equivalent lens is fantastic. I find it much more of a 'daily driver' than the original GR III 28mm equivalent version. The 40mm FOV just works better for most of what I like to shoot. :)

      @@mirkoregina8733 It's extremely sharp. But the bokeh is not particularly special. Actually, we did a video for the official Ricoh channel all about portrait photography with the regular GR III. It should give you an idea of how good it can be: ua-cam.com/video/hoJCEBGE0TY/v-deo.html

    • @Bossti
      @Bossti 2 роки тому +1

      @@mirkoregina8733 I want to chime in here for a bit: if sharpness is important to you and the sharpness of the IIIx is comparable to the III (I hope it is) then the IIIx will probably be a better fit for you than the X100V. I was prepared to sell all my cameras and switch to the Fuji. In the end I did sent the camera back because, coming from the GR III and an X-Pro 2 with the XF 35 f2, the X100V was too soft for my taste. Not saying the camera is bad, it’s pretty great in every respect. But in the end I liked the pictures from the GR a lot more due to sharpness and clarity of the image

    • @EYExplore
      @EYExplore  2 роки тому +3

      Thanks for your opinion but I think you have a very limited understanding of how I shoot. Over the last 10+ years I've been using the GR series cameras and prime lenses on my Nikon like this much more than I use zoom lenses or telephoto lenses. I did a few videos about telephoto to mix things up, but it's not usual for me. Also, it's not about getting close or not. It's about finding the right kind of subjects that interest me.
      You have to bear in mind that these videos are not meant to impress you with the BEST possible photos. That is simply not realistic. Any street photographer will tell you that you can walk around for hours and come back with nothing special. These videos are meant to show you the real uncut process. I don't hide anything. If the photos are boring (and I agree with you, there were mostly ho-hum on this outing) then so be it. It's about the creative process.
      If I wanted to show you my best photos it would just be a slide show of images, not a walk in the city with live narration. :)

  • @MarkusMischek
    @MarkusMischek 2 роки тому

    What disturbs me about 99% of Streetphotography is that the images lack of relevance. I mean either you shoot very interesting scenes (like Bruce Gilden, Martin Parr) or you work with good composition and colours to create a piece of art (like William Eggleston). But just walking around and shooting random stuff that don´t make a great image doesn't make sense to me.

    • @EYExplore
      @EYExplore  2 роки тому +7

      But it's fun!
      I don't make the images for you. I make them for me. Every once in a while I get lucky and get a solid photo. As for these videos, I make them to share my philosophy and technical knowledge for those who are interested.
      Plus, you are comparing an educational video, kind of a behind the scenes, with some of the highest caliber street photographers to ever do it. Do you think I can just go out and hit home runs like those guys while shooting a a UA-cam video for an hour? I don't even think THOSE guys could do it. Their amazing bodies of work were shot over decades. I'm sure they shot random useless shit too, but you never see those photos because those guys didn't make UA-cam videos letting the whole world see their working process. Food for thought. :)
