Excellent video as usual! I really liked the shadows on the crossing shots at the start, and the tunnel ones were cool too. Love how the focus is almost always on the results rather than the gear used and I always find some new compositional ideas to borrow from these vids.

NYC is the same, the sun in December is soft and low angle all day. Makes everything look good.
Nice shots as usual Lucasz. I love 50mm because foreground and background objects have the same size relationship as what you see with your eyes. 35mm and wider pushes the background scene further away from the foreground subject, and also shrinks it.
I have the Nikon Z 50/1.8 S, it’s phenomenal.

50mm is fun, but I prefer 26mm these days. I don't understand what the size of the setup has to do with anything.

Super interesting to see this, because I learned photography through 50mm (I did a four-year degree but for the first year, they didn't let you use anything but black and white 35mm film and all developing and printing was by hand). To me, 50mm is the default. Everything else kind of pivots out from there. I've used 35mm more in recent years for sure, but my mind still frames with 50mm in mind. This was cool seeing someone approach it from the opposite direction.
Yeah, 50mm is far from default for me, haha. In fact, these days I feel like 28mm is the default more than anything (thanks to using a Ricoh GR for years, along with my 28mm for my Nikon). 50mm is so rare for me! :)

Episode well illustrates how a lens focal length can become part of our style, such that different focal lengths can be an “eye challenge”. Overlay texts a plus. Tunnel pics my fav. Japanese chess players a missed opportunity -time and players in shadow. Owls w/pigeons might have worked w/longer f/l lens, no? Not easy to recognize the birds otherwise. (I suppose you are “above” having Alex toss a pebble at the birds to get them to fly😁.)
Would like to see follow up vid about how you manage to operate your camera while wearing regular gloves (instead of those special gloves w/finger cut-outs). Appreciate the light quality explanation. Learned new term “wiggle skating”😁.
Yeah for the pigeons I actually got better shots with my GR IIIx, which as a 40mm equivalent lens. But I think the key difference was the light on that day. My gloves don't have finger cutouts. The once I was wearing were regular gloves, though they are not particularly thick. :)
Ikebukero is my favourite part of Tokyo, so it's nice to see you adapt a 50 to it. I would imagine you need to work hard for context with a 50 in Tokyo.

Thank you! I use both, depending on the lens. If I have an AF lens, like in this video, I just use AF. But I do also like MF lenses. :)
Kindof amazing how much difference 10mm can make on an experienced photographer. I remember you saying 40 was your favourite (in a GR3X video?) but here you find 50 awkward to use.
It's just a tough long, but maybe in these situations I would've been saying the same about 40mm. Though 10mm sounds like not much, it is 25% more than 40mm, so it I assume that means a 25% crop. I'd say that's pretty significant. :)

Do you use AF-C single point with AF-ON ?
I am not very skill with exposure compensation in Av mode and often prefer to use manual. How do you know if you need -0.7 or -1.3ev ? do you look histogram or display highlights ?
I have a problem with my Z6ii viewfinder which is always too bright and my pictures are often slighty too underexposed. same remark when i use a on-camera flash, preview is bright and cannot tune the background exposure without switching flash off. I thought it was d9 setting but it isn't. educing lcd... brightness is not a good solution. any idea of setting ?
Because as I stated right in the beginning, Viltrox game us this lens for free to use for this video. If Nikon gives me free glass I'll gladly use it. Full disclosure, I have since sold all the Viltrox lenses and replaced them with a single Nikon 40mm f/2. Not because it's technically better, but simply because I like 40mm.
As for EV, I do look at the histogram but I also just have a feel for it at this point. Also, I don't nail it perfectly all the time. It's just a guess, and since I'm shooting in raw I can easily adjust exposure in post. Also, I never changed the default LCD/EVF settings in the Z6II. I recently got a Z9 and also use the default screen settings. :)
Wonderful session as always! I noticed your settings on your shots, that you're usually working with exposure compensation. In this case, did you drop it some in order to better expose the highlights, especially a sunny day? Thanks.

I was really curious about what you'll say about a 50mm lens as for me it's a frustrating one.
I got one some times ago as I've read this is a "must have" and so on .. but after some days of shooting with it, I always had this feeling of "to wide or to tight".
And zooming with my feet wasn't really the solution as this wouldn't capture what i had in mind for the scenery I've seen.
Maybe my approach about this lens wasn't the good one and i should give it another go someday, to try a different approach for it.
Anyway, loved the tunnel pics and that grungy signs with the speed limit, thanks for pointing out the "continuous line", this sound alike a fun thing to do and I'll definitively give it a go :)
Yeah, I also struggle with it a bit. I think it just comes down to personal preference. To me it's just a bit too tight. I like 40mm more. :)
Can you do a short video on how to update the Viltrox firmware lens?

Really enjoyed the video. How are you finding mirrorless vs the d850? Considering upgrading from a d600 to an 850 as I have a bunch of Af-d lenses that I don’t want to have in manual focus only.. but still can’t help wondering what I’m missing out on going mirrorless. Does the d850 do better than the z6ii in any areas?
I would say for me personally there is nothing the D850 does better from a technical/spec sense. Sure, it has more resolution, but to me that is not very important. Everything else, the Z6II is superior. The only thing the D850 has over the Z6II, for me personally, is the optical viewfinder. To this day I don't particularly enjoy using an EVF the same way I love using OVF. But, from a technical standpoint, the EVF is superior in pretty much every way (except perhaps refresh rate, as the OVF has instant refresh rate, as it's just reality, lol). The other thing is that I prefer how the 3D Tracking mode is accessed on the D850 vs how the Subject Tracking AF is accessed on the Z6II. But this purely a matter of ergonomics, as the tracking AF is superior on the Z6II in my experience. So, I would definitely not pick up a D850 given the choice of a Z6II at this point.
