I left my own comment about the day she died. For me the shock was so great that when given the news, it simply would not register. Karen Carpenter? Like, the singer? Dead? Oh, this can't be right. This has to be some kind of mistake. It's been nearly 40 years and I can still tell you where I was when I heard.

If you're doing a holiday theme, you can't do Christmas without doing The Carpenters' "Merry Christmas Darling" and "The Christmas Song". They did a whole album of holiday music which I play starting Thanksgiving Day continuing through New Years'. Karen's always been able to make you "feel". Not all singers can make you "feel". The radio is filled with songs that are testaments to the ordinary. But in 1971, The Carpenters beat out The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, The Jackson 5, and Chicago for having the Best Contemporary Vocal Performance by a Group. That's how really extraordinary they are, because other musicians in the academy vote for the winners, and Karen and Richard beat out The Beatles, The Greatest Group of All Time. Amazing! You seem to me to be like a young Richard Carpenter with your interest in music. I hope the future holds for you as much success if not more as The Carpenters' had. Maybe someone will be talking about your music 40 years from now and doing reviews. Wouldn't that be fantastic!

Actually there were two Carpenters Christmas albums, "Christmas Portrait" and "An Old Fashioned Christmas", but the second one was released a year after Karen's death and her vocals on there are mainly outtakes from the first project. (But of course Karen Carpenter outtakes are better than most singers' intended finished product. Several of her classic vocal tracks were work leads, simple rough cuts sung just to familiarize the band with a song. Karen though would just sing them faultlessly the first time out. Her vocal on "Superstar" is like that. With the lyrics read off a piece of paper, that vocal, which ended up as a single and became a big hit, is the very first time she ever sang the song...)

She really first showed her drumming talent live in 1968 when they first appeared on TV. They were called the Dick Carpenter Trio. They performed Dancing In The Street. Karen sang and played the drums in a way that blew me away. She was perfect in her drum rolls as she sang at the same time.

I'm quite elated that someone like you, who's from the younger generation, are appreciating the musical talent of Karen which I believe is underrated and underappreciated. I hope you'll feature/react/review more of their songs in the near future.

Her brother Richard produced and arranged all of their music, and he was brilliant. They did their own layered background vocals. Everything the did was perfection, and Karen did almost everything in one take. She was an AWESOME drummer, praised by very famous pro drummers. There are videos of her drumming on UA-cam. She actually preferred drums to singing.

That cover of "Ticket To Ride", from their 1969 debut album, was Carpenters' first single. It did fairly well...but was then completely eclipsed the next year by two monster hits, "Close To You" (a Burt Bacharach song) and "We've Only Just Begun" (Paul Williams)...

Paul Williams and The Carpenters were always intertwined for me, because of this song and “We’ve Only Just Begun”. Paul is an incredible songwriter. His tour de force was the movie “Phantom of the Paradise”, a Brian de Palma film based on the Faust legend. He wrote all of the music for that movie, which displays an incredible range. He was also the primary character/villain Swan, highlighting his acting chops. I wish I could watch you react to the whole movie! It’s almost entirely camp, but high-level camp; and the music is indispensable. Hunt it down - it’s a joy.

Karen Carpenter, Anne Murray, Carly Simon, Carole King...great female voices of the 1970s. If you're looking for a great song that tells a story, Carly Simon's "You're So Vain" fits the bill.

Karen never said that she was a better drummer than singer, or, a drummer who sang. Not Karen... Years later in one of the many documentaries, RICHARD said that he believed that Karen FELT inside, in her heart, that she was a drummer who sang. No where is there a comparison between her drumming and singing coming from Karen or Richard. Being her brother and business partner, he has some insight into how she felt...what she may have thought. When they started out, she was the band's drummer. That was her passion. But...in order to succeed in the business, and since she did have the ability, that's the direction the band had to take. Great reaction. Next: We've Only Just Begun

Thanks, Dicon - I'm making my comments without hearing all of yours... I always thought the lyrics were a little "simple" and "rhyme-y" in this one -- and I also felt that "I always wind up here with you -- the one who loves me" - might be referring to her brother, Richard - not at all in a creepy way - but they were very close, and he always stood by her, and was a huge influence -- she was, as you already know, interested in being a drummer - and was quite talented... but her vocal ability could not go unnoticed, and it was Richard that pushed her forward on that..

Karen Carpenter had a beautiful voice and was a good drummer - attractive lady, too-I always had a crush on her.
Ya can't go wrong with Karen and Richard Carpenter (I think he was her brother /keyboardist).
They were very popular at the zenith of their fame in the early '70s. They recorded several hit songs, mostly themed around love/longing.

There's a PBS program from years ago about the Carpenters. They still show it sometimes during their pledge drives or sometimes in the middle of the night. It's pretty interesting. You might want to check it out. Richard talks a lot about the music and how he arranged it. When I first started watching it, I thought he really sounded like a musical nerd. I was thinking it would just be them performing. As I watched it really gave me a deeper appreciation for both of their skills.

Two big hits were "We've Only Just Begun' ("White lace and promises..."- played a lot at wedding receptions) and 'Close to You". If you like covers, they also sang the Beatles 'Ticket to Ride' in the typical Carpenters' style. They've had many great songs, but even their so-so stuff is easy on the ears and pleasant to listen to. While they had their audience back then, music was trending elsewhere. It's nice that their talents are being recognized in an era of Auto-Tune and synthesized beats. Can't go wrong with a real instruments and great vocals. ALSO, can't discount Richard's talents behind the recordings. He played a big part in their success that many people don't appreciate..
