Thank you so much for this video. My granddaughter was just diagnosed with this at 2.5. She’s had several speech evals over the past 6 months and she’s learning ASL. I’ve been so anxious and concerned about her possible diagnosis of CAS. You’ve put me at ease. She starts speech for CAS in about 2 weeks and I’m very hopeful. She has a good relationship with her speech therapist which helps. I truly believe she’ll be fine and overcome this, but it’s very emotional for everyone.
My four year old has been dx with CAS since she was about 2 and a half - but, our insurance doesn't cover it, so we can only do one speech therapy a week, with me back up for the rest of the time she needs. Our therapist isn't a specialist, but she probably could be. I work hard with my daughter each week and she has gone from being mostly non-verbal (typical CAS sounds of "eh eh eh" for everything and a few signs), to able to speak in full sentences that are much more intelligible. Its a long road and one that it's easy to feel alone on...

NOT a lot of therapists or Dr know about this! I got shut out because he was normal in every other aspect! The therapist laughed one time as to why he didn't know what was wrong with my son! Actually watched a UA-cam video from some famous person who turned me on to what was wrong with him.
My son is 15 months and is due to start early intervention in october as he is delayed in a few areas. The doctor thought maybe he was showing signs of autism at 12 months, but obviously he was and still is too young to be diagnosed here in Ireland. He has some signs and is scoring like a 9 on M-chat but he doesnt show the typical lack of eye contact or lack of engagement. He is very engaged most of the time but other times he will completely ignore my other family members. He still hasnt said his first word and he is not yet understanding if I say wheres daddy for example he wont look in the right direction. He also doesnt laugh much but is very content and never cries or fusses much, he likes to do his own thing. Does this sound like autism or something else?
My son is 6yo and in Kindergarten, he was diagnosed with CAS at 3.5yo and has been making a ton progress in the last few years of speech therapy! Thanks greatly to a fantastic Early Childhood SLP in Preschool/PreK and has a new fantastic SLP now that he is in full day school. They have helped him tremendously and we can not thank them enough! He still has a long way to go, but the little man is determined and works so hard!
I have asked my 5 year old son's SLP to evaluate him for CAS. He is also autistic and has no words. He had a head injury at 6 weeks of age while he was still with his biological parents and his physiatrist said he is at risk for CAS due to intrauterine drug exposure.
I have to wait over a year to get my daughter into see a behavioral specialist here in TX. In Austin tx and the surrounding area there are only 2 ...the others waiting list starts 1 1/2 year wait . What's the good of early intervention when by the time you see someone it's not early intervention anymore . I'm so frustrated with this .

Idk what i have but when i was a 4 year old i use to get my tongue massaged and when I hear myself speak it sounds perfectly normal but if I hear my voice recorded I hated the way i sound i use to get bullied a lot in elementary school just for my speech disability and i use to get a speech teacher from 3rd all the way to 8th grade and it kinda helped but i still struggle on pronouncing words and and I sound bad in recording and i want to start gaming on UA-cam lol but idk if people going to watch me because the way I speak is different
my brother has this and at 28 his speech is still pretty bad (I question 90s therapy techniques), when it was apparent my son had speech delays my heart broke thinking he would struggle the same as my bother. Thankfully that is not the case, but apraxia is still close to mt heart and a big reason I am studying to be a speech pathologist
My son is 25 months old and has been seeing a speech therapist through the early intervention program in our state for the past 4 months. She recently told me that she thinks he has apraxia, but I don't see some of the things you mentioned in your video so I'm not sure if the therapist is right. I'm hopeful that it isn't apraxia and he's just a late talker. He doesn't mind imitating sounds and is very motivated to try all the time and loves speech therapy. He never gets the consonant wrong but he has difficulty with some vowel sounds, and he usually doesn't make different or inconsistent errors. He tries to imitate full words sometimes and often sounds quite accurate to me. The slp said she notices "groping" and he has difficulty saying more than the first sound or syllable of the word in speech therapy, but when he's alone with me he attempts to say full words or a modified version that he makes up himself (example: wawa for water) I know apraxia isn't usually diagnosed until age 3 so I will wait and hope things get better, and if not then get a referral to a specialist for diagnosis Your videos are very helpful

My son is 5 and was just diagnosed and I'm just learning all about this.... he never really had the "early" warning signs either... at 4 we could tell SLP was probably going to be needed. He got assessed in kindergarten now and we're just learning the strategies and SLP that he will need.... so I don't think it's easy to tell early on. Mine is youngest of 4 so we just thought he was taking his time being the youngest. He was never delayed with sounds or speech or mimicking... but he has a hard time with certain sounds now...
My son also does the repeat of the first syllable like for example to say apple he says AH-AH and for pumpkin he says Pum-Pum he's only 2 and he's going to start speech therapy soon . Let's see how it goes
Oy. My oldest has it (age 6). He doesn't talk perfectly now, but after years of therapy he never STOPS talking, which is something we thought we would never see! The fact that most children just learn to speak naturally is miraculous to me. Unfortunately, I feel like we will be going through this battle again with our youngest who is 2 and doesn't have words yet. This time we do not have money for therapy this time, so hoping I can use Teachers Pay Teachers for me to try and imitate the therapy sessions I sat through with my oldest. (Irony is my hubby is a physical therapist, if only he could just trade services with a SLP). Do you have any favorite resources on there for toddlers? Would buying Kaufman cards be too boring?

Hi. I am an SLPA and have a student who appears to have apraxia. My supervisor saw him for 20 min and ruled it out because he was not groping his mouth. Can a child have apraxia without groping of the mouth?
I know this is an older post and thread so hoping someone will see this. But for anyone that is having insurance issues, I am currently utilizing our county school district office to have an occupational therapist come in and work with my 2 yr old. They think she may have apraxia and they have had two different speech therapists come out and assess her at different times. But it is all free through them. It's worth people knowing about to check into their county school district to see if a similar program is available.
It's not free for everyone, we also got into their early intervention program but we pay a fee every month because we make "too much". My son has a tentative CAS diagnosis.

My little guy is 17 months old. No words yet. When I ask him to say something he only says parts of words, like ba for ball, ka for cat, and so on. What I have been finding more strange is that he seems to have trouble making an o sound. When he says moo it sounds more like mau. When I ask him to say boo it sounds like bau. When I ask him to say book he says Ka, so then I ask him to say boo and he will say boo sounding like bau but he can't seem to put the sounds together. He seems to have a wide range of consonant sounds, but not vowel sounds. He only usually makes the "ah" sound after a consonant. Does that sound like apraxia??
How can you be sure whether is apraxia or phonological disorder please? Are you an SLP? What about if they are 3.5 years old and until like 2.8 years old, they had like 20 words but they can speak now like with sentences of 4-8 words. Most of the times he uses 4-5 words. Also, the more complex the sentence becomes it is harder for them to put in the right order and they repeat their selves. Also, he does pause a bit and tries to find the correct way of saying a word, but it is pausing and says like 2-3 words afterwards in once. However, he has a vocabulary of definitely 700 words and they add words weekly. I mean within 10 months of saying practically nothing they can say sentences and ask questions (proper questions)! But i would say 40% of words are not pronounced correctly. They have phonological issues for sure, but is it be apraxia too? or just phonological disorder? Some times he may say a word with two-three different ways substituting constants. But 80% of the time the substitution is always the same. He can move his tongue in the direction i'm asking him too also, when i say a word he may say it automatically correct but also some times he might not be able (not correct i mean, with substituting constants) and after a few times if i push him, he might say it correctly. But again alone he will say it with the same errors.
Just to add on it he has no issues with vowels at all, not very long pauses between the words also...he seems to be doing some grubbing but not that much! He can copy words when we asked him to do so...some times it is difficult but he tries 2-3 times and eventually he does it correctly, but after a while if he makes mistakes with substitution they are 80% same errors not in vowels for sure
I see signs in my 18 month son- he will grope, lots of sounds without opening his mouth going "hmMMMHMHMHM". Hes using sign language and just says dada right now. Any link with being double lip tied? He has a lip tie.

My son was tentatively diagnosed with CAOS at age 3 1/2. With extensive therapy each week and early childhood schooling coupled with intervention in school he has developed quite the vocabulary. I want to make parents aware that they need to be vigilant and a strong advocate for their child because people may try to misdiagnose them with Adhd, autism or other cognitive disorders. Fight for your child yo get the right care.
How do you know they weren't wrong with the diagnosis of caos? You state people can be misdiagnosed with adhd, autism, or other cognitive disorders.. But what if they did the same with this 🤣 The diagnosis of these conditions have not been around for even 50 years. Your child could develop slowly, and at the age of 7 be mentally at the age of 3, not allowing their brain to communicate, due to development issues.

No apraxia is a motor speech disorder they are unrelated. Dyslexia is a learning disorder.

17 mos is way too early to diagnose Apraxia. Have you had a speech Eval?

What’s the difference between Dyspraxia and apraxia?? my son is 3 yrs old and diagnosed with suspected Dyspraxia.
Dyspraxia is partial loss of the ability to perform a skill while apraxia is full loss.
SLP has mentioned apraxia for 18 month old. He has zero words. He HAS mimicked before, correctly in the past, but doesn’t even try as of late.

My son was tentatively diagnosed with CAOS at age 3 1/2. With extensive therapy each week and early childhood schooling coupled with intervention in school he has developed quite the vocabulary. I want to make parents aware that they need to be vigilant and a strong advocate for their child because people may try to misdiagnose them with Adhd, autism or other cognitive disorders. How do you know they weren't wrong with the diagnosis of caos?

The diagnosis of these conditions have not been around for even 50 years.
Your child could develop slowly, and at the age of 7 be mentally at the age of 3, not allowing their brain to communicate, due to development issues.
