I was fine with the idea that his leg healed as opposed to needing a prosthetic. It saved the production/props team a lot of money that was put to more important aspects of the movie like the set design or good equipment

Once he had cut it, they (the doctors or whoever cut the leg)had put a metal leg there instead but it wasnt really shown in the films but in the books. Thats why in part 2 (the movie and films) whenever he ran, he fell bc he was still trynna get used to the metal leg. There you go. Peeta lost his leg from Cato and the Mutts' attack at the end of their first Hunger Games. Thats why Katniss emphasizes how slow Peeta is in the jungle from Catching Fire. I guess it was hard to fake in the movies.
