In the early 70s I worked for a Sun Oil company garage in Tulsa. It was the shop my dad had retired from. I once was working on a 1960s era Chevy 6 cylinder. Nothing special, I was to replace a leaky valve cover gasket, replace spark plugs, points and condenser. Someone walked by the front of the truck, saw me and informed me the shop foreman was looking for me. He said he’d tell the boss where I was. Where was I? I was avoiding leaning over the fender to do the work. I was inside the engine bay standing on the floor with everything I needed to work on within easy reach. My needed tools and parts on a tray balanced between the radiator and the right fender. Those days of having under hood space have been gone for years. The boss laughed at me and said I was the only one in the shop skinny enough to do that. Yes, those days are gone too.

I ended up taking a larger diameter piece of hose, splitting it and putting it around the two hoses at the rubbing point. Mercedes came out with a fix, consisting of two split pieces of hose to mount over the hoses where they rubbed. An official repair that duplicated what I thought of on my own.

    Enjoy the vids❤

I used to work at a ski resort in Swain NY, and they used Snow Groomers, which used ATF as hydraulic fluid. Every so often they had a hydraulic hose failure and it looked like a crime scene. Well eventually they realized the hose failure was due to a hose rubbing on the frame due to vibrations. They wrapped the hose up with carpet scraps and zip ties to hold it in place and, boom, no more ruptured hoses!

25 yrs ago my 84 dodge pick-up steering arm sawed my transmission line like that. I broke down right in front of an old abandoned gas station in Arkansas and around back in the gravel driveway I found 2 hose clamps and an old piece of fuel line. I had a Sawzall blade in my truck so I cut out the bad spot put the clamps and hose in place and never had another issue. I sold the truck 2 yrs later.

Ray, sometimes you forget to say "click" when you tighten a bolt. It's critical that all fasteners are torqued properly! Don't worry, though, I find myself saying "click" for you. That way you always have proper torque on all those bolts! It's the least I can do.

    • @stevewhite3424

I think it's great that the OEM's have gone to securing fluid lines with pop in fittings held by actual bolts, instead of threaded in fittings. It really reduces the chances of crossed threads and twisted up tubing.

To help get air out turn to stop and bounce steering off the stops about 5 times both ways, it's a pressure spike which helps push the air out, or can vacuum out using a external reservoir

Going from a 90s chevy truck when I was a teen in which I did an engine in cam swap to what cars are now, I have made respect for mechanics. The simplest things are amplified with the addition of electronics/sensors/etc. I was scared to even do minor maintenance on my newer cars, you videos helped me grow to do more. It is all about patience and common sense (the only thing I still have no idea about is differential and transmission work)
