    If you lower the subframe you risk getting the front wheels out of line with the rears. The front toe won't change as the steering rack is fastened to the subframe, but unless you mark the fore and aft and side to side orientation of the subframe against the bodyshell, the car can end up crabbing. Ford have an alignment tool for Fiestas, and I would expect Focuses as well, to reset the subframe.

    • @V.is.for.Vae.Victus
      @V.is.for.Vae.Victus 2 роки тому

      In my opinion, if a part needs a special tool to be reinstalled properly, it's usually a crappy design. That or it's proprietary. Often both.

    • @madmatt2024
      @madmatt2024 2 роки тому

      For the most part, this is an old wives tail. All that happens when you shift the subframe on a macpherson strut suspension like this is that you end up changing the caster and/or camber angles, and usually not by much because there isn't typically that much play in the mounting holes. You can just use a paint marker or witness marks to see where it previously was and usually it's good enough to avoid anything being out of spec. The only time when you could get the "front wheels out of line with the rears" is if there is no suspension attachment point on the body of the car and the suspension is completely self contained on the subframe, which from what I have seen, is only true on rear subframes of a certain design. Even then, you can't really shift it that much out of line with the car body because of the hole size.

    • @V.is.for.Vae.Victus
      @V.is.for.Vae.Victus 2 роки тому

      @@madmatt2024 Unless the subframe is mounted using bushings between it and the main body. If that's the case, bushings could deform over time, and present some alignment issues, albeit minor. One would hope that this would be thought of, and avoided by simply using a couple built in guide pins of sorts to orient the subframe properly before final install, much like some cylinder heads, or component covers, et cetera. Then you have other vehicles that are front drive, and yet have no subframe at all. For example, Geo/Chevy Metro/Suzuki Swift from the 90's simply had small protruding "frame horns" (just a metal bar with two bolts holding it to the unibody, and with forward facing threaded studs that the lower control arms bolted directly to with only a single nut on the front end of the arms, and at the back of the arm was an arm mounted bushing that bolted to the underbody with two additional bolts. Not unlike this particular Ford, except there was literally nothing attaching the two sides to each other. Heck, they didn't even have anything attaching the lower radiator core support to the main body either. It kindof just hung off the front of the fender beams. The entire powertrain just hung directly off the fender beams too. Nothing below it at all. Weird little cars. I used to own one. Quirky little beer cans on wheels. Slow as hell, still fun to drive. Plum dead reliable right up until the entire body disintegrates all at once, leaving you with a 20 year old powertrain that's got 20 years still in it, but nothing to put it in. Best return on 900 bucks I ever spent in my life. 15 years of nearly flawless low cost maintenance, dependability, then one day, you turn left, and that's it, front suspension folds under on itself. I hate living in the salt belt. Lol.

    • @martinrobinson9651
      @martinrobinson9651 2 роки тому

      Maddmatt2024
      Your reply contradicts itself.
      You acknowledge that you can alter the camber and castor by setting the subframe up in a different position, yet if the subframe was setup too far to the port side(left side for non aerospace engineers) you would have increased the negative camber on the left wheel, and reduced it on the right wheel, and both wheels would not be inline with the beam rear axle.
      It's also possible to rotate the subframe around the vehicle centre line and then it will crab.
      The clearance between the main attachment bolts on a Fiesta and the subframe is several mm, which allow significant movement.
      My post was to make Ray aware that it could create a problem.
      You actually suggest marking the subframe and bodyshell, as I did, so we both have the same idea.
      If you set the subframe up on the skew the car handles like a shopping trolley with a dodgy wheel. Ho ho.

    Just wanted to say and it is pure information that when you install the bushings like that it is going to increase the wear on them drastically because they tension when the car is on the ground but they should do that when you lift the car up so lift the control arm up to the point where it would be when the car is one the ground and than tighten the bolts it makes the bushings last longer. ;)

      @@kmsbismark1857 I have no idea where you are getting your information from, but its just not correct. The part of the control arm where it bushing goes isn't round. Its hex shaped, as is the center of the bushing. If you look at the bushing closely, you'll also see that it was designed to flex as the control arm moves up and down while driving. However, the center of the bushing never moves. It stays in the exact same position on the control arm regardless of how you install it. Simply put, it can't make a difference. Maybe you're confusing these bushings with the one on the Edge/MKX recall. Those are the ones you're supposed to tighten with the weight of the car on them.
      I'm not trying to be rude, but I really don't care how good of a mechanic you think you are. I'm a senior master Ford tech. Its the highest level Ford has, and it takes many years to achieve.

That's true, so instead of having a senseless back forth trading insults, check for yourself. I'm sure you're familiar with Ray's good friend FordBossMe and his channel. "The one I think you refer to as designed to flex, if that flex "loads" the "web" torsionally and does not "float" wouldn't that introduce a bunch of flex just setting car down, then even more during compression?"
      That statement tells me you are literally not familiar with this type of design. The bushing is keyed and slides on to the control arm a certain way. Once the bushing is installed, its locked in its resting position. If you pull down on the end of the control arm to connect it to the ball with the car on the lift, you will flex the bushing. Lowering the car down will just bring the bushing back to its resting position. Installing it loaded or unloaded can't make a difference. As I've previously stated, there are other bushings that need to be installed with the suspension loaded. This is not one of them.
      Instead of arguing with me, why not just look up the procedure yourself, and if you find any information that goes against what I'm telling you, show me the reference and we'll have a discussion.

    Last time I did one of these here in the U.K. I just loosened all the subframe bolts till their last few threads then undid all the 4 rear bolts at once and then placed a small block of wood under the center of the stabilizer bar. This was easier as the frame was already 2 inches down giving good access to the nuts. This also gave clearance to the right front bolt to miss the a.c. compressor. The sliding joint in the steering column is enough to let the frame down without disconnection then once both arms are in place remove the wood block and refit the rear bolts before bolting the frame back up when you can still see to realign everything.
