  • First off, no it's not THE 4 cable method! I know that. I 4 cables. I go over three different scenarios for using your guitar processors with your amplifier. The four cable method utilizes guitar processors which have an fx loop built into the processors to allow for splitting the effects to before and after preamp sections of an amp. I do not cover that method in this video.

    This FX loop plugging is also great to prevent " tone sucking" which is what most of these multi effect units do especially in front of a good tube amp. They sound great in headphones,in a bedroom or for direct recording but in a live situation through a tube preamp, they tend to get thin and disappear into the overall mix of the band. You lose that nice pure tone your got your amp's sweet spot to and you get "their" tone instead. Great video.

      Since that unit has amp and speaker modeling, you should always run it in the loop if using the modeling to bypass the amps preamp section, only using the power amp and speakers. Glad you found this video helpful.

    There's an option number 4. If your amp lacks send and return, you can bypass its preamp by connecting the output of the stereo guitar processor to the aux in connection of the amp. Most amps have that input jack.

    Great video! Also, sI need to mention that that's not the 4 cable method. The 4 cable method is: Guitar - Pedal input, pedal send - amp imput, amp send - pedal return, pedal output, amp return- That way you get to choose from your processor (via FX chain order and switching on the pedal) if and where you want the amp's preamp to engage and at what level.

    What is the method (i prefer the 2nd one you showed us) what is the method to use the modeling/distortions in the front of the amp, but the fx like reverb, delay, through the fx loop on the amp? How do i do this with the 4 cable method. Also im a little confused on the stereo/mono thing. Im basically using an evh and mesa boogie 4 12 but im running it in mono i believe. Since the me-50 does not have it's own effects loop, this version of the 4CM puts all the dirt from the me-50 in the amps fx loop, which makes them after the pre-amp, which I find undesireable. To have a true 4CM the fx unit needs it's own fx loop as well.

    • @TheGospelGuitarist
      @TheGospelGuitarist  6 років тому +2

      Yes absolutelty right Chris, I was addressing how to make even this unit sound better. Way nicer modulation tone in an amps loop. Most people place this type of unit in front of the amp. If I am using a nice tube amp for overdrives and distortion, which most of us do, I just use the modulation effects in the loop. I know the GT100 and some other nicer units do have loops, and then the "real 4 cable method" can split the units effects. My point is to show we all have options. Yes, the JC120 does sound good this way being solid state anyway and is a very clean sounding amp.

    • @PainterDans
      @PainterDans 6 років тому +2

      Yes with this unit you would have to put separate dirt pedals in the front. But it’s great for using tons of other effects from the procssor. Especially if you like the dirt from just the amp.

    You should make a video of how to add stomp boxes to the effects chain. I have a GT100 and I don't like the distortions so I've added a metal zone and Sonic maximizer. It sounds so much cleaner than the big pedal and I use the pedal for effects with nothing else. I'm curious if I set it up correctly or if there is another route to make it even better.

    • @TheGospelGuitarist
      @TheGospelGuitarist  6 років тому +1

      Run the distortin stuff in the front input of the amp and run the GT100 for effects through the FX loop on the amp. You probably should put the Sonic in the loop after the Gt100. The Maximizer is meant to inhance the overall sound not the distrotion pedal, use an eq pedal after the Metal Zone for more tonal control.

    • @TheGospelGuitarist
      @TheGospelGuitarist  5 років тому

      Yes, If the ME80 has an FX loop on it, you should do the 5 cable method. That would put amp modeling and distortions, compression in front of the amp while keeping the time based effects in the amps loop. I can't remember if the ME80 has an fx loop. Otherwise yes you can use the amps real preamp tones and place the FX in the loop.

If you use what I would call the "REAL 4 cable method" then yes you have the preamp fully available while also having the effects unit fully useful. There are some good diagrams on the net on this. You can search out 4 cable method videos to use your effects which have an effects loop on them. The one I use in this video does not, but it can be placed into a loop this way or just in front of the amp. It's designed to be in front. Other processors with a loop on them using the 4 cable method you can place amp modeling and overdrives in the front of the amp while placing time based effects after the preamp where they sound better. Hope that helps. Don't forget to subscribe and like the video!

    Very helpful, well done vid! Trying to figure out this Kustom KG 210FX a friend gave me. He got it at a Goodwill for $18.95! Missing its pedal. It's nice but if I connect my effects board from the front it was sounding kinda like leftyfusion88 describes. This amp is loud plugging in the front but if I use the loop, I lose the volume, big time. Is that right? Same with bypassing the preamp, lose the volume. It's like something isn't right to lose that much volume using the loop. What am I missing?

    • @TheGospelGuitarist
      @TheGospelGuitarist  7 років тому

      May be a reason it was $18.95. Is there a loop level control which needs to be turned up? Do you have pedal dieing? Trying out each pedal in the loop by itself and see if maybe you have a dead pedal? The loop on the amp may be damaged as well. Hope that helps. Process of elimination! Plugging straight into the loop and bypassing the preamp completely and not blowing your head off with 100% power amp is telling me the loop has an issue.

I run it to a Peavey PV-4C stereo power amp that goes to 4 12s on one side of my living room & on the other side it was going to a Peavey Renown but now I'm using this Kustom and the sound in my living room aint bad. i have 2 more ways to connect you multeffects for live play:
    1. using a 1/4 jack TRS cable to XLR.
    This way you cand send the signal from the headphones output to an amplified speaker, turning off the eq of the speaker if you can, not all the speakers have this option. you can use only this way or then you can put a microphone in front of the speaker to send the audio signal to the mixer in case you have one.
    2. using a 1/4 jack TRS to 1/4 jack TRS cable and a Direct Box.
    This way you don't need to use extra long cables, and you cand send the audio signal from the headphone output to the Direct Box, and then from the Direct Box to the mixer through an XLR cable to the Mixer in case you have one.
    I've notice the headphone output (STEREO) has more exit volume than the MONO outputs.

    • @TheGospelGuitarist
      @TheGospelGuitarist  8 місяців тому

      1. Your guitar plugs into the GT8's input.
      2. GT8's effects send goes to the VGA5's guitar input.
      3. VGA5's effects send goes to the GT8's effects return.
      4. GT8's L output goes to the VGA5's effect return. If the VGA has stereo effects returns you can use both L and R.
      That's it. You will have to figure out how to split the GT8's effects between the front input or the amps fx loop. If you don't have the manual I'm sure a quick search will point you in the right direction to obtain it. Enjoy and don't forget to come back and subscribe, like to help me out. Thanks!

      If you are using the send and returns on the amp, you may have to edit the settings for the GT8's fx loop as well as the VGA5. I am not familiar with either of these products enough to guide you. Manuals on both should be looked into as well. On most products you must engage the FX loops. Just hooking them up does not activate the loop.

      You can use your preamp on your amp as an amp model if you like. Guitar into processor. Processor send into amp input. Amp send into processor return. Processor output to amp return. Put send and return at the begginning if your signal chain in your patch. Turn preamp off on processor. Turn send/return On. Now your amp is the preamp model.

    • @robertreynolds9961
      @robertreynolds9961 3 роки тому

      Then on patches you want to use amp models from processor instead of your amps preamp turn the send/return off. This bypasses the preamp of your amp and sends the signal straight to your power amp. Turn preamp models back on and select amp model you desire. This gives you the best of both worlds

    Hi, congratulations, there aren´t many videos on this topic!. I have experimented many options for connecting my guitar, fx processor and guitar amp. I have a zoom g9.2tt and a fender twin amp. I love the sound I get, though I want to have a stereo sound. The g9.2tt has a great preamp, so i have connected both stereo outs to a stereo power amp, and the amp to the speakers of the fender guitar amp. It was really nice, and I'll have to re-program everything for this configuration. The bad point was that it occasionally produces a "plop" sound. It is a sort of compressed mid range harmonic that suddenly blows the speakers. I've found that lowering the mids of the eq, it disappears, but also disapperas the great clean sound I was enjoying! Have you ever experienced anything like this? Thanks! Juan, From Patagonia, Argentina.

    • @TheGospelGuitarist
      @TheGospelGuitarist  9 років тому

      lituanoz I haven't experienced anything like that. Could be your power amp causing it. Is the power amp and speaker ohms matching? Say the amp is 8ohm are the speakers 8 ohms? These things need to match.

      Check to see if the unit is making noises in other setups. If it is...something is wrong with the FX unit. Say does it pop when using it along with headphones and no amp. Pop in front of the amp or in the loop ect.

  • @tankdarla637
    @tankdarla637 3 роки тому +1

    So essentially, the second method you use I believe, using 4 cables would actually just be 3 cables if you werent running in stereo? This is essentially just hooking up the me 50 in the effects loop? Which puts the whole unit after the preamp of the actual amplifier? That is how I have my me 70 hooked up. I like it like that because I only uses a few effects and the tuner and I want the effects after the pre amp. I do use the units boost and eq sometimes however, and it seems to work fine this way. I have never even tried any of the modeling preamps or distortions, I like my amps preamp and distortion. I basically just want to be reassured that my me70 is being run after the amps preamp.

    • @TheGospelGuitarist

      Yeah, a lot of players use a noise gate in the loop. FX make noises too. If the gate is in the loop, it kills the distortion noise and FX noise.

    • @ivankrushensky
      @ivankrushensky 5 років тому

      If you've bypassed the volume knobs on your head, they won't work. Some amps have a master volume that is beyond the heads preamp, in which case it may still work. Therefore, the volume will solely be controlled by your processor. Make sure you have the 1/4" volume on the processor turned up, as well as the master volume on the processor.
      The reason they have different volume knobs for different outputs is so you can send one to, let's say an amp, and another to a mixer. Each needs it's own individual volume so they can be adjusted to match whatever is necessary for what you're running it to.

    • @TheGospelGuitarist
      @TheGospelGuitarist  6 років тому

      Not an electronics guy but I don't believe the inputs are rated in ohms. A tube head needs a specific load on the outputs and return jacks are not going to support that. A solid state head you may try but I think you would risk blowing out the return section of the amp if run to hot, which is very easily done. My recommendation is not to try this. Returns are for effects not amps.

      @TheGospelGuitarist  9 років тому +1

      Well, a real tube amp works best for tube tone, although solid state cleans can be nice on some amps. No one can help you find your tone. You need to spend time tweaking knobs, trying pedals, switching strings, pickups, even cables. Too many variables involved for me to setup your amp. The RP's I am not familiar with so you'll need to read up on the unit to see if it will do the 4 cable method or if you just want it in front of your amp where most people seem to run them. Presets almost always sound bad to the user, so tweak them until they sound good to you. That may not be super helpful but every ones ears hear differently, so you need to learn what it is you like to hear from your own rig. Even with tube amps we switch tubes to find a tube character we like. Lots of stuff to play with are a guitar player. :)
