It's almost like when you play on easy, you can build an economy strong enough to support an army of the most expensive cavlry unit in the game. And funny thing really, when you buy improvements, it's almost like the cavlry gets powerful. Whoda thunk it... While this game isn't perfect, I'd say this is an unfair review. The French are a powerful late game civilization, but they take a while to get going. Playing on easy doesn't really give a good sense of it. The AI just isn't aggressive at all. A competent human player, playing the Germans or the ottomans, counters the French really nicely.
@Line Error absolutely he's really good at other games, but it's obvious that he hasn't played age of empires 3 much, he said it himself. Losing the first game to moderate bots shows this quite well. I mean, I'm good at total war, doesn't mean i can pick up aoe3 in seconds. Even 2 which almost everyone has played a lot, is very different from 3. I'm not complaining, the video was fun to watch and good content, but there are several ways to counter that french cav strat.
@@raifthemad when he was setting up the game at about 7:34, his settings were on moderate. Then he goes off to check the online playerbase and comes back to game setup at (approx) 9:57. There it does indeed say easy, but also the ai have also reset, along with the teams, so everything has gone back to default. The video then cuts to the start of the game, but it's likely that he just set it up again just as before, but didn't want to show the same setup twice (not the most interesting content if he did). Another reason that it's unlikely to be easy ai, is that easy ai generally attack later in the game and with less units, easy ai is truly pathetically easy.
I used to play age of empires 3 and my skill level when i stoped was 25 so i was really good, the tactic you showed isnt broken this what every french player is doing and is very easy tou counter
The German Doppelsoldner are the best overall counter. The French Curassier have a 3 tile splash damage, but the Doppelsolder have a 2 tile one, much higher attack, are cheaper, and have an attack multiplier against cavalry. Equal numbers, the Doppelsoldners win hands down. They also have the 2nd or 3rd highest anti-building attack of anything short of artillery, turning everything to ash. Honourable mention to Ronin; they're exactly like more powerful Doppelsoldner, but the drawback is that you can only get 20 of them at most as Portugeuse or 10(Even stronger) Spanish Ronin. Less honourable mention to the Spanish Imperial Tercio Pikeman. Strong multipliers, moderate stats. One on one they don't mean much, but they cost about 1/6 what a Curassier costs, and the Spanish have upgrades to mass produce like wildfire.
@@patriciusvunkempen102 ikr , everyone know that french cavalry is the most broken unity of the game , but in a game against other peoples or expert IA its a game of rush , and they're just too expensive to set up.
I actually really enjoyed AOE III. The card based bonus system and meta progression just seemed so neat. Though I never got a city far past level 10. It's tedious.
I love this game. More than i love AoE2. I will admit that 2 is a better game, both in AI and in Graphics, but i always had more enjoyment playing this game. Some of my friend and i still regulary played some multiplayer of AOE3 untill like a year ago, when they got bored of it. Still sad about that, i loved those crazy unit spamm fights!
@@voidgods ok, lets have a look at it objectively: 1. what can you do age 1 in aoe2? scouting, and maybe walling off for a black forest boom strategy if you are called fatslob. what can you do in aoe3? scouting, collecting treasures, build trading post and build a forward base as well as ship stuff from the home city. id say in that regard aoe3 clearly wins. 2. lets look at fighting. aoe2 has the hill bonus which is neat, but other than that... path finding often is weird, and the bonuses are hidden. aoe3 on the other hand clearly shows all the bonuses and maluses a unit has. 3. what about other game desings? fields in aoe2 suck to a point that its rumored aoe2 hd remake will have some significant changes. building each unit seperately also is annoying, especially in drawn out games. map bugs have a much more severe consequence in that you get royally screwed without an equal amount of gold. you basically are unable to win lategame if your opponent can afford some gold units like teutonic knights and you can only fling trash units at him. aoe3 on the other hand has a way to keep up proper gameplay until the end, introduces more strategy with the decks where you can focus what you wanna specialize on, you can build up to 13 units at once and the civilisations arent all similar. so tell me, have i missed anything?
@@dervakommtvonhinten517 well to be fair, age 3 only has a few unit formations you can use, and most people don't even know it exists because they are optional and you need to click a button in the options to ve able to use them. This is way more easy in AoE2. But i think the resource management ganeplay is better in AoE3, at least in multiplayer, becausr you can have endless food and gold through mills and plantations, and endless wood through factories and trade routes. This makes long multiplayer matches with endless unit spamm battles a lot more possible in AoE2, where only gold is endless through trade. Wood isn't endless because trade routes don't exist, food isn't endless because farms need wood to make, and if there isn't any stone anymore good luck making proper defences....

Can instantly destroy buildings with their raider Cav, other side of the Aztecs. You are over here implying that is an Exploit. In the Muti player. You are playing as intended.
John Frederick you can edit other special files to make units free or really cheap. You literally just type in how much you want them to cost and thats it. Muskets for 1 food instead of 75 food and 50 gold? No problem. Musketeers with 10 speed? There it is. With tripple the range, you make it happen. Fifty times the ammount of damage, just tell the file to do it for you. What he did was just saving time and going up levels.
He didn't hack anything meaningful. Just saved himself from having to play a bunch of games to get access to the cards he wants. Asian Dynasties makes it much more manageable.

As soon as I get to 4th, phasing in bombards is pretty smooth at that point. But as I said, I keep a handful of cav. I typically use them when my forward spies see attempts of flanking skirms or culverins which I then deploy the cav to take care of. I guess I should give spies their fair due. Line of sight is amazing, and only certain units can detect them. But as long as they give me the heads up, I can turn my main army towards the issue then steam roll it.
Spiff, playing as France: ''We are getting decimated by the germans (...)''. Ooh, the good old days, they always find the way to make you feel nostalgic.
The real reason Cuirassiers are so good against AI is because the AI seems to hate making Dragoon type (light cavalry) units (Dragoon, Horse Archer, Ruijter, German War Wagon, Yabusame etc), let alone in sufficient numbers, they also don't do the latter with Heavy Infantry (Musketeer type unit), they always build them in such limited numbers that any cavalry can beat them, even light and medium (the strength of the Musketeer type is that they do more far more ranged damage than light cavalry and enough to consistently kill heavy cavalry at range, but also have a huge melee bonus against cavalry (because bayonet)). Cuirassiers counter infantry, so with superior speed they usually have an advantage over a similar number of Halberdiers, Musketeers and especially Pikemen, this is because pathfinding in this game is still la catastrophe. The AI only seem to build Hussar type medium cavalry (Uhlans, Hussars, Cossacks) in higher numbers, which get shredded by heavy cavalry like the Cuirassier and the Ottoman Spahi. This is also the real reason why just building a large mass of light cavalry has the same effect on the AI, because light cavalry have ranged attack and they counter cavalry and siege, the AI builds pikes/halberdiers and you can just kill them with hit and run attacks. All in all, both light and heavy cavalry just completely break the basic strategy of the AI of massing either med cavalry with infantry or massing artillery with anti-cavalry infantry, it's like the developers purposefully made the AI fun to play against for us from the "massing one unit in a RTS"-community.
Instant deploying troups are also doable with the Russin, without the bonus of the natives. Even tho that the Russin troups aren't as good as the french cavalry, they're able to spam them just like you did in this video. And you can do that in the early/mid game.
I love playing as the ottomans because while they don't have a large verity of units, their late game infantry and cannons, as well as their ability to spawn villagers for free make them a bit OP in general. Their infantry also have bonuses against cavalry, so they would probably be this strategy's worst nightmare.

age of empires isn't exactly for historical accuracy...
aoe2 also had quite some inconsistencies
And Suleyman The Magnificent.
And meanwhile a secret society is bullying 3 generations of the same family for some water of the fountain of youth

A competent human player, playing the Germans or the ottomans, counters the French really nicely.
yes, this guy has no clue
@Line Error absolutely he's really good at other games, but it's obvious that he hasn't played age of empires 3 much, he said it himself. Losing the first game to moderate bots shows this quite well. I mean, I'm good at total war, doesn't mean i can pick up aoe3 in seconds. Even 2 which almost everyone has played a lot, is very different from 3. I'm not complaining, the video was fun to watch and good content, but there are several ways to counter that french cav strat.
@@sympunny8636 Losing to moderate bots? When he started the first game settings said easy.
@@sympunny8636 Ah, that explains it, I was a bit surprised that easy ai attacked as much as in this video, guess they were on moderate then.

Solomonta how do you counter it?
You can counter them easy with dragoons
Solomonta that can be applied to most of Spiffing Brit’s videos to be fair
One on one they don't mean much, but they cost about 1/6 what a Curassier costs, and the Spanish have upgrades to mass produce like wildfire.

the gravity engine with the cannon balls, the graphics and the gameplay are all superior in aoe3. aoe2 has just a huge nostalgia boost
@@dervakommtvonhinten517 don't talk nonsense. It's fine if you like 3 more, but gameplay is not improved in a single way.
@@voidgods ok, lets have a look at it objectively:
1. what can you do age 1 in aoe2? scouting, and maybe walling off for a black forest boom strategy if you are called fatslob. what can you do in aoe3? scouting, collecting treasures, build trading post and build a forward base as well as ship stuff from the home city. id say in that regard aoe3 clearly wins.
2. lets look at fighting. aoe2 has the hill bonus which is neat, but other than that... path finding often is weird, and the bonuses are hidden. aoe3 on the other hand clearly shows all the bonuses and maluses a unit has.
3. what about other game desings? fields in aoe2 suck to a point that its rumored aoe2 hd remake will have some significant changes. building each unit seperately also is annoying, especially in drawn out games. map bugs have a much more severe consequence in that you get royally screwed without an equal amount of gold. you basically are unable to win lategame if your opponent can afford some gold units like teutonic knights and you can only fling trash units at him. aoe3 on the other hand has a way to keep up proper gameplay until the end, introduces more strategy with the decks where you can focus what you wanna specialize on, you can build up to 13 units at once and the civilisations arent all similar.
so tell me, have i missed anything?
@@keizervanenerc5180 ahm, formations are the same in aoe2 and aoe3. both have the option to click them in the menu and to use hotkeys. i cant really see anything that aoe2 did better than aoe3 other than having more civilisations. but since they are pretty similar....

OH silly Spiff. Regardless of map, The Russians can instant build units as well as make those units build barracks which can build more units. Also Russians with a little know how. Can instantly destroy buildings with their raider Cav, other side of the Aztecs. You are over here implying that is an Exploit. In the Muti player. You are playing as intended.
You literally just hacked by editing game files.
Do it more
John Frederick you can edit other special files to make units free or really cheap. You literally just type in how much you want them to cost and thats it. Muskets for 1 food instead of 75 food and 50 gold? No problem. Musketeers with 10 speed? There it is. With tripple the range, you make it happen. Fifty times the ammount of damage, just tell the file to do it for you.

I upped half the citys in the game to about level 60 a few years ago xD
YES! This game was my childhood, I was a bit too young to experience AOEII and I LOVED it!

I love playing as the ottomans because while they don't have a large verity of units, their late game infantry and cannons, as well as their ability to spawn villagers for free make them a bit OP in general. Their infantry also have bonuses against cavalry, so they would probably be this strategy's worst nightmare.
