Fluance makes a reference 5.1 system with floorstanders for left and right channels for $899. You can get a SVS SB 1000 pro and the maranta and be right under $2500. You could go budget and do a BIC f12 for your sub and a Denon s769h and be in at $1600. Take it a step further and do no sub since the towers have the 8in subs and you’d be at $1300. It has to be the best budget system

I give it a tie between the cheaper Jamos and the Fluance. These are exactly the type of systems I see getting people hooked. Small, cheap, attractive, knock the socks off of most soundbars/surround in a box. Pair these new beautiful speakers with a used reciever you plan to hide away and it's amazing what you can do for around 1000 bucks.

I have had a 5.1 system for more than twenty years. At first with a Marantz amplifier and some Jamo speakers. Then I replaced the amplifier with a Yamaha one, 4K stuff, and the center speaker with a more powerful Indiana Line. The Jamo continue to give me good service and it is curious to see that both these and Marantz continue to be recommended. Good things last.

Hey Andrew and Kristi, it’s Emerson who super asked about selling his current audio gear (Cayin EL35, and CXA81) to buy all Schiit gear, and you gave fantastic advice to never change things or upgrade unless you are not happy with something about it.
Thank you so much for the advice. I decided to keep my tube amp, and sell my CXA81, which (while an absolutely beautifully functioning unit with plenty inputs and outputs. A fine DAC, Preamp, and A/B amplification [efficient speakers in a small room likely never leave class a]) is a very clear sign that I’ve caught the affliction and an integrated amp doesn’t afford me the opportunity to enjoy everything about my Audio/Video hobby.
I sold my Schiit Bifrost Uber DAC plus some other unused stuff around my house and have ordered a used Schiit Gugnir DAC. As soon as I shipped it I realized my system doesn’t sound acceptable and I broke your rule because I loved that DAC.
But guess what, I traded my unused and like new RF-82 II pair and my R-12SW (I paid $800 + tax for everything)…. I traded it for like new Heresy III’s.
I now have a Schiit Freya +, Gugnir Multibit, looking for one or two Aegirs, or looking to trade my integrated tube amp for a tube power amp.
Home theatre is Denon x-2700h plus 5.1 Klipsch rp, 600, 6000 and 504 and spl100.

I thoroughly enjoyed this system packages. For my "streamer" I have had really good results with the Amazon Fire TV Cube. My house is not part of the Apple Ecosystem, being Android focused, and I like the fact that the Cube (NOT a Stick), also gives me power and volume control of my Bose sound system. One of these days, it will die, but I just can't talk myself into chucking my LG Plasma. I know..... The TV Cube provides the IR transmitter to sync up all of the remotes. Right this minute, I think I am leaning towards the JBL package. Some of the tower drivers look similar to the L-100's that I used to sell @ Franklin Music in Atlanta, back when the Earth was still cooling, in the late '70's. Yes, I'm old.

I think these are perfect examples for people that do appreciate better sound than the cheap pre-built all in one systems/simple soundbars, that want to try their hand at a decent first time quality home theater. Not going to destroy your savings purchasing all the components, and gets you 75-80 percent there to top of the line sound

Hi Kristi and Andrew, I realize this is a bit off topic, but I need some help and thought other viewers might like some input on the same general topic, multi zone.
It looks like I’ve made a mistake. I have a McIntosh MX 123 AV preprocessor which has 3 zones available for audio output. I use zone 1 for my living room, zone 2 for my lounge, and split the zone 3 output to 2 different pairs of outdoor speakers. Zones 1 & 2 are powered by McIntosh amps, but in order to have Wi-Fi and app based control over the outdoor speakers, I was advised to purchase 2 Sonos power amps. The intention was to have the ability to have a continuous, multi zone signal (music) as you walked throughout the house and back yard. Unfortunately, even though I’m running a direct analog signal through RCA to the Sonos amps, they have a really long processing delay. There appears to be no way around this issue that I’ve been able to find, so it seems I’ll have to find a different equipment option. What would you recommend for power amps that will pass through the analog signal without delay, and allow me app based control over the 2 different sets of zone 3 speakers independently for on/off and volume control?
    thanks in advance!

    Pioneer VSX-LX305 - 1200$
    KLIPSCH r12-sw - 200
    emotiva T0 - 400
    Emotiva C1 - 320

    Get 2 Klipsch R-12SW subwoofer ($199x2)=$398
    Total ($1,885).
Now if you want to get fancy get the Emotiva BasX3 amplifier
    for the front stage ($499).
    Get 2 Russound ADP-1.2 Speaker-level to Line-level Adapter ($39.99X2)=79.98

I might be a bit of an outlier, but I've "downgraded" from years using a 5.1 system to a 2.1 system for everything. I found switching between 5.1 for movies and 2.1 for music a bit jarring, so I've been looking for an amp/speaker combo that delivers crystal clear vocals and enough subwoofer "umph" (as we say in the UK) to not need the rear channels anymore.
I settled on a full KEF setup with two LS50s and a KC62 subwoofer, paired with the very neutral NAD M10 V2. I honestly don't miss the rear channels. For me, toeing in the speakers correctly and using Dirac to set up the listening position was more important in a "small" 4m - 5m room.

I’m team Andrew on this. I liked a lot of he’s speaker choices better. $2500 is actually a fairly easy price point to hit without having to include a tv. Consider that a basic emotiva 5.1 speaker setup will still give you $700 for a receiver to go with it. I like that there are so many affordable options these days to get a setup that really speaks to you individually.
Ps: $2500 is a lot less than a lot of the receivers I’ve seen you review.

I hate trying to find advice online for speakers. If you go onto any forum or redit page for speakers the people on them are toxic and useless. They act as if anything under $2k is no better then dollar store pc speakers. They will often refuse to give recommendations like this video. And they attack any brand that makes cheaper speakers like these.
I really wish there was a website i could go to to list off what i had found and was thinking and id get usefull advice not just "nah thats all trash get these $8k speakers instead"
And cant trust anyone that gets a commission cause they to will just push what gets them the higher cut or push the brand they own.

This listing comes at a good time for me. I retired last year, liquidated most of my property, and after spending the winter in Costa Rica I am looking to buy a small retirement home this year which of course will involve getting a new home theater/music set up. Being a retiree, of course I want it as reasonably priced as possible, but WiFi and Atmos compatibility were musts for me. I had been leaning toward a Klipsch surround set up with the Atmos towers and a Denon AVR-X2700H. Of course that can change depending on the logistics of my future living room. In fact, I might decide to skip the rear surrounds if they would be too awkward and go with a 3.1.2 setup instead. Anyway, this video has given me plenty of food for thought, and any criticism of my choices is welcome. Thanks.

    • @andersj91
      @andersj91 Рік тому

Surround speakers are easier and more immersive than height speakers imo. Height speakers can be done right *if* actually done right if in-ceiling and room corrected, but surrounds are better bag for the buck. But the average retiree whose ear maybe can't do the same level of critical listening would likely benefit the most from more speakers in more positions than fewer, more expensive speakers. Just my .02.

How would the best $2500 sound bar compare with any of these 7 recommended systems and if these systems outperform, why ie. in what area ? Bass, sound-staging, accuracy, tonality, transparency ? Take the space considerations out of the equation. I'd like to know if a perfectly set up separate system will beat a soundbar. Kind of like the 90's debate of those all in one mini hifi's could outperform a 80's style all separate stereo system. Thanks for a good video !

My rep (John) said most people can't hear the difference past the 3rd room. I heard everything all the way up to and beyond the 6th room. My wife couldn't pass room 1. Consequently, I wound up spending $15k over the next 2 years and my wife still won't forgive me, and still have most of that system from 15 years ago (Parasound, Rotel, Yamaha, SVS, Paradigm, Amphion, Oppo LG OLED). I could see a user upgrading to another SSP in the future, adding a second pair of Klipsch 600 mII's for surround and two more in ceilings for the 4 height channels. All of which could be done incrementally.

Like the look of the tower speakers with the .2 on top of them. From any distance, I cannot tell they are vinyl wrapped versus wood. The sound upgrade over my S510BT Denon and speakers (5.1) is noticeable without tools as well.

Great video ... it is awesome that both you and your wife share the audio/video hobby. I support any of the 7 systems you put together. The Q-acoustics are great speakers... the sub for them poses a quandry. Get the underpowered Q3060 sub for $550 or the bigger Q B12 for $800 that match visually but are not the best bang for buck IMO. I personally say... slightly mis-matched looking wise... SVS PB1000 is an awesome HT sub for $500.

I really enjoyed this video as I was doing some work around the house. I got a chuckle out of the back and forth near the end. For protecting ego purposes, I'll give the win to Andrew. 🙂One thought I did have though is for those considering the Sony STR-DH790 may want to also consider the Yamaha RX-V6A/TSR-700 especially if they would like phono input. With the new boards and firmware updates...I've been pretty pleased with my TSR-700 although it's understood there are caveats for some 8K video gamers out there. Either way, nobody can go wrong following your suggestions.

Very well done! My opinion, Andrew does win, purely for the Onkyo 7100 choice with Dirac. It will allow for a VERY NICE future upgrade beyond the Kantos, which are really good in their own right. That said, Kristi probably nailed the speaker choices better, especially for most mainstream users. So maybe I'm wrong, Kristi is right it's a tie? So.....Kristi wins again on the tie breaker? Sorry, Andrew.

I have about $2500 invested in my 5.1 setup. I have a Denon AVRX3400, Emotiva A-700 amp, Aperion 5T towers, 5C center, 5B bookshelves, and two SVS SB12 NSD subs. I got sone incredible deals on all the gear and it was a couple of years ago. Considering what I have invested I think it sounds amazing!
Also, I think all of these are great setups so its hard to pick a winner. I’m not a huge fan of Klipsch so that’s a knock against Kristi, but I know a lot of ppl like them. Jarmo has a similar sound, but you just can’t beat their price!

Thanks Andrew and Kristi! Planning to set up a home theatre within this next year or so as I'm moving to a new place in the next couple of months. I know you mostly do product reviews and not so much how-to guides, but would you be able to share the different ways (I'm assuming there are different ways!) one can hook up a 5.1/5.2 home theatre system while still being able to hook up the front speakers (+subs?) to the typical hifi setup such as streamer+dac+amp? These would be for when I just want to listen to some music in the best quality possible.

Andrew I’ve been watching your channel non stop for a month. Love your knowledge and delivery. I’m getting a NR1711 delivered next week based on your review. Ever since HK has gone downhill I’ve played around with Onkyo and Pioneer but nothing has the sound of the old HK amps. I’m hoping the Marantz will offer the same sound quality and years of service the 80s HK receivers had. My mains are JBL Northridge ND310II’s. I’m really hoping they match well as I love the speakers themselves. Hats off to your channel for no nonsense down to earth content!👍👍

They are ALL great systems and I don't think you can go wrong with any of them. I went with the Jamo components after listening to Andrew's video on those speakers a few months back (pre-move). I wasn't thrilled with the Jamo center channel (neither were Andrew and Kristi), plus I ended up getting a BDI cabinet for CHEAP on FB marketplace, and the Jamo wouldn't fit the drawer, but I ended up with a JBL center with Jamo S807's in the front with the Atmos speakers, S803's in the back with the Jamo C sub, all on sale or clearance somewhere, all run through the Pioneer VSX-LX305. Very happy with the system.

I was lucky too, I got the two double driver towers, Atmos speakers, two bookshelf, two subs and a Yamaha amplifier off eBay for £900 oh and they guy gave me £300 worth of speaker cable and HDMI. I sold the amp (as I prefer Sony's sound) for £280 so all in cost me £620 so you can imagine my cost to performance is amazing!!!

You both picked components from manufacturers I have thoroughly enjoyed (or still enjoy). My fist home theater with a projector had Jamo towers, center and surround speakers powered by a Denon AVR. I have small Klipsch system with a Polk subwoofer and a Denon AVR. My current main system with Sony 65" OLED is powered by an Onkyo AVR and is all JBL (the surrounds and the center are modern JBL, the mains are vintage JBL L200b's - no subwoofer needed). I think you both chose great systems are several attractive price points. I think Andrew won this round, especially with the two Jamo systems and the JBL Stage systems, it was really close. This was another entertaining and useful video.

I have the Jamo S 803 HCS system and it is great. Now, I use S807 towers instead of the 803s (they are in a 2 channel setup) and no sub, but it is plenty for our everyday living room system. Powered by Onkyo RZ820. I would concur with Andrew to keep the volume down a touch. I don’t go over -10db because the center doesn’t quite keep up.

Thanks for the great review. This isn't really a question, but I'd be interested to hear you and Kristi suggest 2.1 channel systems using the same $2500 budget.
Actual question: after reviewing the Audiolab Omnia & Rega systems lately, have you considered more budget-friendly all-in-one options like the Marantz M-CR612 or the Denon RCD-N10 / D-M41? I'd be curious to find out if they're similar to a Denon/Marantz A/V receiver or they're just "lifestyle" products.

I had a decent budget so went with my existing AppleTV4k and added the Onkyo 6100 + the Q Acoustics 3050i bundle (3050i x 2 / 3010i x2 / 3090ci / QB12 ) - its obv over 2500 but I also wanted something that sounded neutral for music but also looked good in my living room (their walnut finish is beautiful). I love it, just two nights ago my daughters were squealing in excitement watching the Phantom Menace (esp. the pod racing part) and actually said how much they enjoyed the surround sound in that part.
