    Creepy Doll (Updated)
    Tiny Construct, Chaotic Evil
    AC 18
    HP 10
    Spd 30
    Str 4
    Dex 18
    Con 10
    Int 10
    Wis 10
    Cha 10
    Immunities:
Bludgeoning, Piercing, Slashing damage from nonmagical weapons, Fire, Psychic, and Poison
    Condition Immunities:
    Poisoned
    Senses:
    Blindsight 30ft
    Passive Perception 10
    Skills:
    Sleight of Hand +8
    Stealth +8
    Animated:
If the object lacks legs or other appendages it can use for locomotion, it instead has a flying speed of 30 feet and can hover. If the object is securely attached to a surface or larger object, such as a chain bolted to a wall, its speed is 0.
When the animated object drops to 0 hit points, it reverts to its original object form, and any remaining damage carries over to its original object form.
The DM might rule that a specific objects slam attack inflicts slashing or piercing damage based on its form.
    Cloth Body:
The Creepy Doll has advantage on a Dexterity saves and skill checks.
    Sneak Attack:
Once per turn, the Creepy Doll deals an additional 10d6 damage with its Scissors attack, if the Creepy Doll has advantage on the attack or if the target has an enemy within 5ft of it, and the Creepy Doll doesn't have disadvantage.
    Precious Object:
The Creepy Doll always knows exactly where its Scissors are at, even if it's on another plane of existence.
If the Creepy Doll drops to 0 hit points and the Scissors isn't destroyed, the Creepy Doll returns to life 1d10 minutes later.
If the Scissors that the Cloth Doll wields is destroyed, the Creepy Doll loses its Immunities to Bludgeoning, Piercing, Slashing and Fire damage.
    False Appearance:
While the Creepy Doll remains motionless, it is indistinguishable from a toy doll.
    Actions:
    Scissors (+1 Adamantine Magic Dagger)
    Melee Weapon Attack
    +9 to hit, 5ft Reach, 1 Target
    1d4+5 Piercing
    Haunt
    Range 60ft, one target.
The Creepy Doll chooses one creature of its choice, that creaure becomes cursed and the Creepy Doll knows the creature's location as if by the Precious Object feature . Only one creature can be cursed this way and the curse can only be removed by Remove Curse or by the Creepy Doll's death.
    -_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-
    Possible story hook:
The Creepy Doll was once owned by a nobleman's sickly daughter, who played with the doll everyday and enjoyed crafts made from cloth and parchment. Instead of paying the blacksmith to resharpen the scissors every six months, the nobleman commissioned for scissors "that would never dull" for his daughter.
As the years went by, the daughter's incurable sickness overcame her and she passed away. Unable to deal with the grief, the nobleman had his daughter's room boarded over, with the doll locked inside.
Locked inside the room with the doll, the ambient magical energy from the Scissors was absorbed by the doll due to the daughter's lingering attachments to it. The doll became animate into a kind and playful creature, but it couldn't nor wouldn't leave the room.
Eventually the manor was abandoned, inviting as a haven for demon worshipers due to its remote location. The dark and chaotic energies from their demonic rituals suffused the manor with abyssal magic. These energies corrupted the doll, twisting it into an evil and malicious thing that would torment and kill those who disturbed the daughter's room.
    -_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-
Alternate methods to defeat the Creepy Doll:
    1. The Creepy Doll's Scissors can be placed within the Blacksmith's Forge, destroying the Scissors. The Blacksmith can reforge the magical metal into a +1 Adamantine Dagger or 10 +1 Adamantine Ammunition for arrows/bolts.
    2. The Creepy Doll's Scissors can be placed within the tomb of the nobleman's daughter in her hands. The dark magic afflicting the Creepy Doll ends, and it will place a Ring of String on the finger of the pc who returned the Scissors to the daughter, then it will place itself into the daughter's arms and the magic animating the doll ceases. The Ring of String functions as a Death Ward spell, that breaks once its effect is activated.

In my soon-to-be Epic Level campaign, a DMPC has a doll familiar made of her own flesh, and it's cursed by a Great Old One. It eats corpses to heal itself and if the owner dies, it gives birth to a clone of itself so it can grow into a clone of its owner, creating an endless cycle of death and rebirth. Luckily for the party, the NPC is one of the good guys out to slaughter the Great Old Ones responsible for the planet slowly dying, which the PCs have been roped into helping with by a desperate dead goddess seeking champions.
The doll can also cast Eldritch Blast through its eyes as a laser vision, and has Truesight and Darkvision. It prefers dual-wielded sickles as weapons and usually gives the Help action by latching onto people's heads and biting their faces so they can't see incoming attacks.

I have yet run a proper game but love this idea so much.
I had thought of including a detail my father usually adds to his jokes just to mess around with those who happen to know the jokes he told.
Every now and again, he would mention a green brick, not red or any other explanation to why this green brick would appear, but he would make sure to mention it enough times to confuse his friends.
Maybe I should do the same, random green brick are strewn across the world with no apparent reason to why they are there or what their significance is to the plot. I can imagine players would start to collect them, maybe build a house of green brick or ultimately find a little gnomish hut build from the elusive green bricks, just to see the inhabitant is gone.
It may be a good mechanic to use whenever a party has progressed too far into the story and you needed to stall for time and prepare ahead.
The conspiracy is sort of like the bug jars in Skyrim, that leads to alchemist's shack.

    • @gnarthdarkanen7464
      @gnarthdarkanen7464 4 роки тому +1

I can only warn against using the SAME mechanic too many times... Like using the green bricks... do it once... and try something different...
These sorts of "micro-plot-hooks" can be a blast to parse together over a bit of a haul... AND they certainly buy time, when the "main Campaign is struggling" in progress... You can easily transition or invent new intertwinings so the "micro-plot-hooks" thing can lead them back around to the "missed" trail of the main Plot whenever you're ready as a GM...
Sometimes you should add a "reveal" episode for the micro-plot... and other times you don't need a thing...
One of my silliest, was the party getting "blessed" with a special arcane sight-form to visually SEE "actual plot hooks" made of invisi-mythril... What ever the hooks (which resembled softly glowing fish-hooks to the party...) were attached to would bring the Party back on book, or send them winging off on another adventure or step in the progress... It was HILARIOUS seeing them collecting the things, following people around creepily... asking hookers or barmaids or complete strangers (even a few old women of "High class") for permission to retrieve the hooks so they could get on with the adventure...
They ended up with about a gallon-size pickle jar full of them... Tried to sell them, but even high powered mages couldn't figure up a spell to see them... so nobody wanted an expensive pickle jar...
Went on one or two MARATHON sessions' worth of investigation while the Table-chatter hypothesized what the hell they were for, who scattered them around... how the mechanic was supposed to work... I'd have to excuse myself to the bathroom a little more often than usual to avoid laughing my ass off in front of them...
AND someone chucked about a one-pound bag of dice at my head when I finally broke near the end of a Campaign arc to let them know I'd just invented this as a way to give them hints about "plot hooks"... I'd tried a few times with NPC's... "The legend of plot-hooks and chosen adventurers..." some such in-game jibberish... BUT they wouldn't take that alone...
It DID earn a mysterious slot in our "legendary running gag" collection though... Once in a while, someone just pipes up at the Table, "ALRIGHT G** D***it! Do I see anything attached to a glowing silver fish-hook?!" ;o)

Finally saw the Honorary Dwarf! YES! And yea, the doll was a great idea. The few times I've GMed, I liked doing stuff like that. One time, they failed their perception roll while they were camping under the cart because of a heavy downpour. I said they herd some noise (there wasn't) and just got them nice and jumpy, no long rest for them. One of the things they thought was the noise, a dragon, caught my ear, so when they found out the next day that the storm had washed out the bridge, I made it so they found some gold along the bank of the river that has washed out the bridge. From them being afraid of a noise they imagined in the dark to a dragon's lair in an old dwarf fortress that had just been washed out because a rain caused the trickle of water to become a flash flood that cleaned the place out. RL intervened before they could fully investigate the ruin, never mind the dragon that had been washed out of his lair, but the ideas I had...

I remember a creepy doll in one of my ongoing games.
It's a Ravenloft campaign, and at one point early on our wizard was given a doll by Madam Eva to give to Charles Reneir, mayor of St Ronges. "Dolly", as the wizard dubbed her, turned out to be possessed by a demon, and acted as a beacon whom low-level demons would flock to on certain nights. She also gained an intense dislike for our bard, and took perverse delight in cursing him and generally terrifying him. We eventually got the demon exorcised from the doll, but she certainly left an impression.

I'm afraid I can't give too many details, since I'm not the DM for that game and I wasn't at the session when the party exorcised the demon from the doll. I also don't remember much because it was around two years ago, but I'll try my best.
Dolly just did a lot of creepy things in general, like communicating by way of "feelings", moving around when nobody was looking, blankly staring at one of us at camp each night, and apparently a horde of shadow demons appeared right after she was exorcised. Our wizard also got weirdly obsessed with her, refusing to part with her and not letting any of us speak ill of her, but that probably has more to do with the wizard being crazy than anything (he wants to build a theme park staffed by zombies, after all). I can't exactly remember what the bard did to spite Dolly so much, but she ended up laying a curse on him that gave him disadvantage on Charisma checks. I'm sure you can imagine why that was so frightening.

No worries. Yeah, the wizard wanting to build a zombie theme park might have been inspired by him reading the notes of a necromancer. That and his lingering guilt over accidentally torching a couple of innocent kids with a Fireball spell at a carnival where our party were ambushed.

While playing Ghosts of Saltmarsh my halfling pirate wizard (school of Divination, parrot familiar, Jack Sparrow type mentality) decided to burn down the creepy mansion the party was investigating. His reasoning was that if the mansion was gone, there’d be no need to investigate, so they could just leave and get paid.
In the end, one character died (inexperienced player who made a really dumb decision), and another was injured. Also, I used one of my divine portents (I’d rolled a 20) to convince the party that I had nothing to do with the fire (I ended up switching characters because of conflict with another PC, although my next guy didn’t do much better, since he accidentally whacked one of that PC’s friends).

I did something similar with a cursed doll. The players never figured it out. The doll was really fast, had some teleport capability, had some wall-crawling ability, and a horrible prankster. They did manage to kill it a bunch of times. They could not figure out how it kept coming back. It was linked to an awesome magical cloak that operated as a form of a super-size bag of holding, protection giving, and flight. As long as someone was using the cloak, the doll kept materializing and messing with the cloak wearer and his/her friends. If they ever looked closely at the doll, the doll was wearing a cloak that looked just like the cloak it was linked to.

Sounds like my dad's malevolent puppet. He was heavily into ravenloft and he created an evil puppet that would randomly appear to harass his players, they tried just about everything. Even locking it in a box and dropping it into a lake but it would still appear jumping out of the bushes or whatever environment they were wandering through to attack the party directly. From what he said it wielded a kroche needle as a dagger to stab the target. I think he said it had a name but he told us about that one a while ago and I just don't remember

    • @Lonewolf-gp5zf
      @Lonewolf-gp5zf 4 роки тому

Addendum. The reason it attacked them was because the party had killed his maker for some reason. The backstory for it was a spin off of the story of pinocchio where he was made by a traveling puppeteer who loved this particular marionette doll so much that he poured a portion of his own life force into and gave it life. It was truely unkillable as it would just come back even after being burned to ashes. Usually when his party least expected it.

Lol this reminds me of a campaign I ran that ended with a Death Titan and a player getting a rose from the spirit of his dead wife. In the campaign, the party was living in the main town and they all had homes and families. In this town was an old lady who made exquisite porcelain dolls that the wealthy often bought. Including a player who had twin girls. The old woman was rumored to be wealthy and often thieves would break in to her shop to rob it. She was a witch and some of her dolls were animated (Soulbound Doll from Pathfinder). These dolls would swarm the crook and subdue them, then alert the old woman. She would then use the crook in a ritual to drain their soul and split it into fragments which she would place into crystals that became the heart of these dolls and did her bidding,
She used these dolls to raid the buying customer's home of valuables during the night and they would leave bags of valuables outside for the old woman who would come by after dark and collect in her cart.
The player who bought two for his daughters ended up being creeped out by them after things started to happen at home, like one girl calling her doll 'Mistress Goldie'. A few times he mistreated them after he started seeing darting shadows out the corner of his eye. Once, He woke up with one of them standing on his chest holding a needle and thread with those souless eyes staring into him. He tried to grab it but couldn't move, so he started yelling for help. He heard his wife coming as she was calling to him and the doll hopped down and ran under the bed, His wife came in, took the blankets off him and saw that the player was sewn to the mattress from one shoulder all the way around his body to the other shoulder via his pajamas. After being cut free, he moves the bed only to find that there is nothing there except the heating duct and the cover for it.
Needless to say, this wasn't the only thing that happened. He would find one, toss it out, only to find it on a shelf or his child playing with it. He tried burning it but they were unaffected. For a while, his family and the party thought he was going mad. They investigated the old woman and her house/shop but never found her ritual room. And yes, right up until the campaign ended, that player would occasionally see one of the dolls, The other doll was the same and was taken by his other daughter when she became and adventurer (fighter) as a good luck charm.

In a town in the woods at the top of a hill
There's a house where no one lives
So you take a big bag of your big city money there
    And buy it.
But at night, when the house is dark
And you're all alone, there's a noise upstairs
At the top of the stairs, there's a door
And you take a deep breath and try it.
And the flashlight shows you something moving just inside the door
There's a tattered dress and a feeling you have felt somewhere before.
    And there's the creepy doll
    That always follows you
    It's got a ruined eye
    That's always open...
    And there's a creepy doll
    That always follows you
    It's got a pretty mouth
    To swallow you whole...
So you scream and you close the door
And you tell yourself it was just a dream
In the morning you head into town,
'Cause you want to go antiquing.
In the store there's a strange old man
With a wandering eye and a withered hand
When he hands you the old wooden box
You can hear his old bones creaking.
And you know what you will find inside the moment that you see
That someone's carved your name into the tarnished silver key.
    And there's a creepy doll
    That always follows you
    It's got a ruined eye
    That's always open...
    And there's a creepy doll
    That always follows you
    It's got a pretty mouth
    To swallow you whole...
And when you come home late, the doll is waiting up for you
And when you fix a snack, the doll says it would like one too
The doll is in your house and in your room and in your bed
The doll is in your eyes and in your arms and in your head - and you are crazy.
Now it's late and you head downstairs
'Cause you just can't sleep so you make some tea
    And the doll disapprovingly asks
If you really need that much honey.
You decide that you've had enough
And you lock the doll in the wooden box
You put the box in the fireplace
Next to your bag of big city money.
As the smoke fills up your tiny room there's nothing you can do
And far too late you see the one inside the box is you.
    And there's a creepy doll
    That always follows you
    It's got a ruined eye
    That's always open...
    And there's a creepy doll
    That always follows you
    It's got a pretty mouth
    To swallow you whole.

I've been planning out a creepy doll story except? You're summoned to investigate a town that had gone dark a while back. You're accompanied by a cursed bard who every te he speaks you can't take him seriously. Automatically laughing at and ridiculing him. As you approach the town you see what once was a bustling center of trade and commerce? Now littered in porcelain dolls of all shapes, sizes, and a constant feeling of being watched. The bard feels as though you're being followed but due to his curse you laugh, don't take him seriously and call him names. Until you realize a doll you saw when you first came into the town has been consistently appearing for the last 3 blocks. You turn to see a doll slowly turn it's head toward you. And it's mouth cracks open into a shriek. As you break into a dash you notice every doll has now taken to almost levitating after you. You find a survivor in an alleyway who leads you to his former workshop. He was the doll maker that made a deal at the crossroads outside of town. His reward was the clay that he made the initial dolls with. They used to put a lock of hair from the owner. As a sentimental token of ownership. No one realized that this was a ritual from anicent times. You now either have to destroy the dolls whom as of now are making themselves and anyone that comes to the town. Or find the demon of the crossroads and reverse the deal.

Sooooo this has inspired me to share my own dnd story, if All Things DnD decides to share it with more people thats fine.
HOW THE LOVABLE BARBARIAN USED ALL HIS ELEMENTAL LIGHTNING AMMO TO DESTROY A PIRATE FRIGATE
Our caste is a Lovable Orc Barbarian in a metal suit, A Fallen Aasimar Bard who tries to get laid with every woman he sees within a tavern, a Human Wizard formerly apart of a cult, a tiny Goblin gunslinger, and a Tiefling monk with a robotic arm.
The story is a steampunk meets fantasy, during the story one of the NPC's, a demigod by the name of Vera, Destroys a leviathan using whats left of her own magic and that of the Human wizard and falls on her face in exaustion, during the investigation of what was left of the massive fleshy thing. The party is told over the radio by a Succubus Merchant who was with them that a group of ships was spotted closing in on their currently down ship, the party rush back and find its pirates. They man the cannons, and Galion(the human pilot) puts the ship to half speed, The engines having been damaged by teh resulting explosion of Vera's attack. And the Pirates give chase, during the fight Maeve(the succubus from earlier) destroyes one of the sloops chasing with a well placed fireball.
Now with two ships remaining, the last sloop followed by the frigate close in on the parties Ship, the sloop fires off a few minor damage shots and the frigate wails on the Parties ship from on high. When Jasper(our barbarian friend) gets the bright idea to dump all of his Lighting crystal ammo in a cannon and fire it at the Frigate, I told him the chances of this backfiring and potentially killing him(which i was banking on) and he still decided to do it, lo and behold, the roll was good and the cannon successfully didnt blow him up, instead it hit the frigate and disabled its engines due to the lightning frying it, bringing the ship that was 2 times bigger than the parties ship and wiht supierior firepower down and winning the fight.

Around 6 months ago my players heard about a ghost ship in game that had treasure if you killed the ghostly crew and giant animated dress creature that seemed to be the captain. The only things were, no matter how many times they're killed, they're back by the end of the day, and on top of that, if you find and try to raid the ship a second time, you never come back. For many years those were the rules of this strange ship that arrives in a mist by only 1 river in the world. Then came my players. One of them was being held in a hospital (long story), and while they were waiting for them to finally be discharged, one of the NPC's in the party talked to the receptionist and found out about the treasures aboard the ship. He told the group and they decided to keep an eye out for it. Fast forward and the group is surrounded by mist while traveling near the river, the boarding platform emerges from the mist and they board the ship fearing what would happen if they refused. On deck they find there is no crew, in contrast to the stories they heard of a crew of skeletons keeping the ship going. They hear a woman's laughter from below and go downstairs to investigate, the mist keeping close to them all the while eerily. Below deck the mist quickly clears revealing the creature, much larger than expected, 20ft tall. Battle begins, party of 4 vs 1 cloth creature. It's moves are most sound based, ear killing screeches to rambling sounds that cause players to magically walk into water puddles made from newly made holes in the ship. The water shocks the group, giving them the challenge of positioning themselves correctly. After a hard fought battle and a downed player, the creature is slain and vanishes, and the treasure chest appears. Once opened, out leaps a 1 foot tall version of the boss that hugs the smallest member of the group, she and the group are immediately alerted and she hides behind another member. The small creature just follows her, doing nothing but looking at her. After some testing of how it reacts when she does various things, they find it's harmless, a little creepy, and somewhat cute. The most it usually does is occasionally let out a creepy child's giggle. Though on 2 occasions, it has saved their lives, but that's a story for another time. This, was the story of how my players got a minion version of Lorelei from the level 61 dungeon in Final Fantasy 14. I never planned to have minions in the campaign, but I put it on the loot chart in case they got a 6 on the 1d6 since I couldn't think of anything else. Best decision I made for that dungeon, it's the group's creepy cute mascot and we all love it in our own ways.

    Notes from a NG human Idiot;
Greetings from lovely Restenford(found out the Kingdom wide Plague was started by an Evil Witch named Corvusina...)!
A traveller told me this tale while i was at The West Wind Tavern the other day, so be aware that it just might be a rumor. He was a Human dressed in a completely foreign military outfit, all a solid stone gray and decorated with strange emblems and a Scouts hat(re: Souther Civil War Officers Uniform with hat), claiming his name was Jericho Cantrell....
" ya'll wanna hear something really terrifyin'? This here Witch what been spreadin' this thing is nuthin' compared ta the Swarmin Man...."
    Actual story:
    I was running the group through Deadlands Re-loaded and they come across a waystation during the course of another game. The NPC running the establishment looks like an increadably skinny version of the Tallman from the movie Phantasm, but speaks with an almost child-like tenor and constantly tapping all of his fingers together. First thing he says on seeing the party;
"Oh goody, more guests! I'll be ever so full ..."
After getting the posse set-up for the night(and meeting the creepy Tom Sawyer looking kid that had the exact same mannerisms as the Adult), one of the PC's(an indian Shaman/doctor named Solomon) tried to commune with the local nature spirits and found out(through a combination of really good rolls and chips) this Innkeepers origin: turned out he was a Black Mage that shoved his soul into the nearest insect hives and took them over. He'd literally consumed the little boy's family and turned "Tom Sawyer" into a walking hive of Crickets. He almost TPKed the posse when he was confronted later.
May your pantheon ever favor you

I drunk goat with at int of 18 throwing spells is not fun. The only guaranteed way to get it to do what we want to with alcohol, or magic items, it has a cape that lets it fly. Maybe it is a voodoo doll and the spirit manipulating it is like a familiar.
Instead of manifesting as a creature, it possesses the doll it is bound to. It would be incredibly creepy for deadly's doll to have a grudge for the party and set out on its little quest to cause trouble for the party as punishment for what they did to its master's house.
